Just that! Been asked for ID constantly lately and not been wearing makeup as giving my skin a break. I'm 40. This never normally happens. Do you think you look younger without makeup actually?

I wear quite a bit of make up. I was bullyed at secondary school for having acne and "bad" skin so that's a big reason why I wear it. It's my own insecurity and also the fact that my teen acne left scarring. It makes me feel alot more confident and able to face the world. It's definitely not a vanity thing or a way of getting attention.

I look about 40 either way (am 39). I look more put-together and prettier with it, but still only bother for work. I rarely see another woman over about 35 at work who doesn't dye her hair, so I feel I ought to make a token effort by painting my face.

I don't care what anyone else does to their face.

rattusrattus20 · 17/11/2019 17:41

for sure if you're under say 35 & have decent skin, thick makeup can easily age you. less sure if you're say 40+.

I am 40 and look about a thousand years old without make up on

With it on, I look like a reasonably well put together 40 year old

mencken · 19/11/2019 12:03

what a tragic, sad thread. Slap is of course an option, but I've yet to hear a man say 'I look so old and tired without facepaint'.

I'd like to post a celeb example or two, but a) they are never photographed without makeup despite what the captions say and b) they always have a face like a slapped arse so look rough anyway. Why don't people smile any more?

GooodMythicalMorning · 19/11/2019 15:27

I actually think well done makeup would help both men and women.

Top prize for the most obvious stealth boast ever

SadForNoReason · 19/11/2019 17:34

I look about 20 yrs older!! Blotchy, wrinkled skin! Not pleasant!! Wink

SalemShadow · 20/11/2019 20:18

🤣🤣 I promise you it wasn't a stealth boast. I just noticed everytime I don't wear make up I get I'd. I reckon I must look you get without it. I have started putting my make up on more naturally now

I wouldn't want to go out without some makeup. It boosts my self esteem which in turn helps to make me look younger. I'm probably kidding myself, but thats how I feel about it.

Vates · 20/11/2019 20:31

Only if you are actually young to begin with. 30+ then not much difference (I say this as a 30-something person). It all depends on who is checking for ID to be honest. When I was a Boots girl; I had so much anxiety that I checked people who looked ancient because I was frightened. They were flattered.

MythicalBiologicalFennel · 20/11/2019 20:34

Actually I think very few people look better with make up on. The vast majority look older with it on.

I am in my 40s and look my age. Can't be bothered with make up, I hate the way it feels and smells, I can't afford it and have no time to put it on or take it off. I don't feel I am missing out.

Vates · 20/11/2019 20:34

*I should say looked "ancient" to me at the time of being a teenager myself! Just to put it into perspective :)

Jolonglegs · 23/11/2019 12:21

Fennel - The vast majority look older with it on

Please don't tell me this!

blueshoes · 23/11/2019 12:38

I disagree with you.

You are not missing out. But you clearly don't have a clue about make up. That is not a reason to extrapolate it to the skill of other women who do wear make up that you might not even notice.

TooManyPaws · 23/11/2019 12:59

I can't be arsed with make up except for special occasions when I decide which person I want to be, together with my clothes, hippy, gothic, whatever. To be honest, most people's make up everyday doesn't do much for them; look at the Duchess of Cambridge - doing her wedding makeup herself didn't do her any favours with striped cheeks and solid eyeliner making her look hard faced. The Duchess of Sussex had a professional doing her wedding makeup and it showed the difference.

Makeup to me is just another form of playing around with fancy dress, though I may use a tint occasionally to even up blotches from acne. I'm in my late fifties and even at university I felt sorry for those who were too insecure to face the world without make up. I know I'm ugly and I can't be arsed to paint on a daily basis.
