AIBU to refuse to wear my work uniform?

Hi, sorry this is a very boring AIBU. I recently got a new job and filled out a sheet regarding uniform. The options are small, medium, large and extra large and I picked small (I’m a size 6/8 and very petite)

The uniform came today and I tried it on when I got home, it is HUGE! The polo shirt is so long it almost goes to my knees and and the jacket could fit me in twice. I look absolutely ridiculous. AIBU to refuse to wear the uniform? They have told me they don’t do extra small Confused

@Witchend this is why I’m questioning the uniform! I know it is not a standard size ‘small’

@Pussinboots25 I understand it's not very comfortable when a uniform doesn't fit, but they can't do much really. If you were bulging out of it they might be like 'It looks unprofessional' but if it is too big then it's not seen as an issue. I work at a hospital too and when I did nursing previously, my uniform didn't fit at all, I am the same as you-a size 6 on top and it hung off me and I looked like a kid lol but you just have to get on with it unfortunately. It's not a priority, as long as you are in your uniform then that's most important. It's not a fashion show x

Expressedways · 14/11/2019 19:54

I had a same issue for a volunteering role where a oddly huge unisex small was the smallest size top and they were great about it and special ordered me a children’s size XL from the supplier. They now offer that size to everyone and some of the other ladies have changed their tops too, they just hadn’t considered it before because no one ever mentioned it. Hopefully your employer will be just as accommodating when you go in tomorrow!

Wheredidigowrongggggg · 14/11/2019 19:55

Photo please OP! Can’t possibly say without one...

Bargebill19 · 14/11/2019 19:58

Perhaps someone picked the wrong shirt up - or a batch has been made with the wrong label in. Wear it, take a spare too just incase they say it’s ok to change into something more comfortable. Then suggest either they order another - incase it’s a case of wrong label in shirt or suggest you get it altered by a seamstress at their cost.
But - devils advocate, perhaps it’s not that’s bad ?!

heartsonacake · 14/11/2019 19:58

YABU. If that’s the smallest size and it doesn’t fit, you need to get it altered.

ThatsMeInTheSpotlight · 14/11/2019 19:59

Did I miss the pic or have we reached 2 pages without one?

Crunchymum · 14/11/2019 19:59

You aren't very forthcoming with this picture you offered up several pages back.

If you are that small there are packs of kids polo shirts (in a multitude of colours) in Sainsburys for £3.50.

Tothemoonandbackx · 14/11/2019 19:59

@NCuserfromtheblcklagoon 😂😂😂 xx

VardySheWrote · 14/11/2019 20:00

It would be a lot worst if it was too small.

It's really not that much of a big deal if it's too big as long as it's safe - why do you care so much what you look like.

A polo too long, you can cut it, put an elastic band, put inside the belted trousers. It sounds like you are over reacting massively.

StatisticallyChallenged · 14/11/2019 20:02

It might well be gents small - despite most of our staff being women our uniform polos are gents. We got women's initially and they were ridiculously short. Fine if you have a sedentary job but for people who are constantly bending, stretching, picking up children, crawling on floors etc they were just too damn short. Every woman happily moved to guys instead.

They should be able to order smaller though, even if they don't have it in stock.

myself2020 · 14/11/2019 20:04

Go in tomorrow and show them. Argue that it doesn’t make you look professional so you are worried the parents will not take what you do seriously

Pussinboots25 · 14/11/2019 20:04

@Crunchymum how rude are you. My point is the shirts are abnormally large not im abnormally small to need Children’s sizes.

And regarding the picture, I’m not at home at the moment Confused

@VardySheWrote cut it ffs. As if

cut it ffs. As if

as if what? You are making a ridiculously big deal out of nothing.

You can't wear a uniform several sizes too small, or shoes that don't fit. Everything else is easily solved.

Keep your fitted clothes for your private life, job done.

myself2020 · 14/11/2019 20:08

(i’m petite, and had t-shirts down to my knees before - i looked like a bad clown. employer had mercy and allowed me to source something different)

Pussinboots25 · 14/11/2019 20:10

@VardySheWrote I don’t want a fitter polo shirt for work and never said I did, I just want one that doesn’t drown me, not unreasonable is it. I haven’t made a big deal out of anything Confused have you read the thread? I’m just looking for solutions. I would happily get my uniform alternated but I will not be cutting it myself and rocking up to work with a frayed polo shirt.

@myself2020 🤣🤣

myself2020 · 14/11/2019 20:11

I think most people on here just don’t get how big “too big” can get. T-shirt down to my knees, crotch at the same level, trousers belted on tightly - petite people can easily look like a homeless clown. and altering means taking everything appart at the seams, cutting it and putting it back together. takes forever.

AryaStarkWolf · 14/11/2019 20:11

Get someone else to wear it with you.

😂

Mrsmadevans · 14/11/2019 20:12

Put it on a 90c wash and shrink it, then tumble dry it , l bet you it will fit Grin

Pussinboots25 · 14/11/2019 20:13

@myself2020 thank you! I don’t want to look fashionable at work, I just don’t want to look like a clown. Quite reasonable I think

OP posts:
Pussinboots25 · 14/11/2019 20:14

@Mrsmadevans I darent take the tags off yet incase they will swap it. But if not, that’s my first plan Grin

OP posts:
VardySheWrote · 14/11/2019 20:14

good grief, I didn't mean just hack it with a knife - either cut, fold the hem and do a couple of stitches or get some sticky iron tape - or don't cut and live with an uncomfortable hem.

I can barely reattach a button, but even I managed to deal with the hems on my kids uniform trousers.

put an elastic band on the side or in the back in the meantime

Darkstar4855 · 14/11/2019 20:14

The hospital should have a linen dept/sewing room that can adjust them for you - mine did specially tailored scrubs for me when I was pregnant. Failing that it’s worth asking on your local facebook community groups for someone who can alter them cheaply for you .
