AIBU to refuse to wear my work uniform?

Pussinboots25 · 14/11/2019 18:31

Hi, sorry this is a very boring AIBU. I recently got a new job and filled out a sheet regarding uniform. The options are small, medium, large and extra large and I picked small (I’m a size 6/8 and very petite)

The uniform came today and I tried it on when I got home, it is HUGE! The polo shirt is so long it almost goes to my knees and and the jacket could fit me in twice. I look absolutely ridiculous. AIBU to refuse to wear the uniform? They have told me they don’t do extra small Confused

I really don't see the problem Confused Do what everyone else has to do when their uniform is too big. Use a needle and cotton.

Zaphodsotherhead · 14/11/2019 19:23

Safety pins. It's the only reason my work uniform fits (and I HAVE to wear it).

ArtieFufkinPolymerRecords · 14/11/2019 19:24

Are you very short? Even if I put on one of my son's XL tops (I'm size 8) they wouldn't reach my knees.

Straycatstrut · 14/11/2019 19:26

They should have xs and petite sizes if they offer xl and larger.

If it was a larger woman being sent something way too small and they'd tried to squeeze into it it'd be a problem wouldn't it. They'd feel ridiculous and self conscious and wouldn't be expected to sort it out themselves.

I know it's not a 'fashion show' but it's not fair for some peoples uniform to fit correctly and some people to look silly.

Pussinboots25 · 14/11/2019 19:26

@ArtieFufkinPolymerRecords
No I’m not unusually short that’s why I’m confused. The sizing is just abnormal

Get it altered and ask them to foot the bill.

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 14/11/2019 19:27

I think hiding the pinned polo behind the jacket is a good idea for now. Would that work?

Sycamoretrees · 14/11/2019 19:27

Why do you dread to see the larger size? Surely you are aware bigger people need to wear clothes too....

MaybeitsMaybelline · 14/11/2019 19:28

Put it on boil wash and a very hot tumble dry. I can shrink anything. Failing that, wear it. It isnt your problem if your look daft, you are representing their company so its up to them to decide whether they are happy or not.

blaaake · 14/11/2019 19:28

Have they accidentally given you a men's small?

Pussinboots25 · 14/11/2019 19:30

@Straycatstrut thank you!! It should work both ways. This is exactly what I mean. I feel so self conscious and uncomfortable having to wear them, especially meeting new people for the first time.

I don’t think that you can refuse to wear a uniform if it’s company policy.
Complain to the uniform department but you still have to wear what you’ve been allocated in the mean time.

Pussinboots25 · 14/11/2019 19:31

@Sycamoretrees because is a size small is so big, how big is the extra large going to be? You’ve completely twisted what I meant Confused

WillowSummerSloth · 14/11/2019 19:33

OP I think people have been a bit unfair on this thread. I'm very petite too and having clothes too big just makes me feel so childish. It's really embarrassing. I don't see how it's any worse than a larger person being made to wear anything too small. I hope it's a sizing issue and a smaller size does exist.
I used to work in theatres and even the smallest scrubs were huge. I am just 152cm and size 6 and it felt ridiculous like I was dressing up in a grown ups outfit!

OverByYer · 14/11/2019 19:34

Gosh some really nasty responses here.
If you are requiring wear uniform then you should be given one that fits. If it doesn’t then your employer should either get you one that does or get it altered

Newbie1999 · 14/11/2019 19:34

I wanna see a pic! Not that I don’t believe you, just intrigued to see how big it is.

Pussinboots25 · 14/11/2019 19:35

@WillowSummerSloth Thank you for your comment I feel stupid now Flowers but I really feel so uncomfortable and completely childish. I’m supposed to look professional and I just look absolutely ridiculous. I hope it’s a sizing error and they can swap for me tomorrow. Fingers crossed!

@OverByYer I know but that’s how people roll on MN I suppose Confused I’m hoping they will be understanding at work when they see the size

DeRigueurMortis · 14/11/2019 19:37

I agree with the pp's saying you should wear it tomorrow, simply just to demonstrate how it's simply not appropriate to wear.

Personally I think your idea of getting a plain navy top in the right size and attaching the logo is a good one (but work should pay for the top).

The cost of altering a polo shirt is likely more than it even cost.

Uniforms can be a good thing, but there has to be a degree of flexibility imho to cover sizing at both ends of the shape spectrum and obviously for any cultural/religious issues.

Pussinboots25 · 14/11/2019 19:37

@blaaake it’s worth mentioning as it would make sense, although it’s still ginormous for a small man Grin

Pussinboots25 · 14/11/2019 19:38

@DeRigueurMortis I agree! Will speak to them tomorrow and find the best possibly option. I doubt they will disagree with me getting it alternated if I’m not comfortable. They have been great so far

Don't go chopping / sewing / shrinking it before work have seen it. I know if my work get sent branded uniform that is not the size we ordered the supplier will exchange it.

I'm also intrigued to see how big it is.

Northernsoulgirl45 · 14/11/2019 19:43

Two big and you can take them in but too small and you are screwed so it isn't the same but I can see it is annoying op.

Witchend · 14/11/2019 19:49

I think yours must be incorrectly sized. My 12yo, who is small for his age would look fine in a small t-shirt. He's only 4'8" so I find it hard to believe you're smaller than him.
He's wearing his sister's "lady medium" t-shirt for dance tonight because he got his dirty and it really isn't much beyond his bottom. You can see it is big on him, but nowhere near ridiculous.

DavetheCat2001 · 14/11/2019 19:50

Posting for the pic...
