AIBU to refuse to wear my work uniform?

Hi, sorry this is a very boring AIBU. I recently got a new job and filled out a sheet regarding uniform. The options are small, medium, large and extra large and I picked small (I’m a size 6/8 and very petite)

The uniform came today and I tried it on when I got home, it is HUGE! The polo shirt is so long it almost goes to my knees and and the jacket could fit me in twice. I look absolutely ridiculous. AIBU to refuse to wear the uniform? They have told me they don’t do extra small Confused

@Pussinboots25 i’ve been there... Nobody would give a bigger person a uniform that gapes everywhere and tell them to just put a couple of panels in...

Pussinboots25 · 14/11/2019 20:16

@Vardyshewrote I’ve already said multiple times if they can’t get me a smaller one I will alter it myself.

I was just replying to your rather rude reply to my post...

It’s probably a men’s small.. dp has a 42inch chest (swearing blind he’s a small but no button up shirt would fit so I measured him) and he can wear a small.. it’s fitted looking on him but none the less it’s not bursting at the seams.

Check the labels or tags for either unisex or men’s.

I remember the “maternity tent” I was given as a work uniform.. it’d only needed to have been that big if Jordan n her tits were having quads at 37 weeks I could put my knees in beside my bump.

Likely they've ordered a stock of standard sizes from the suppliers but it doesn't cost much to get the logo embroidered on a different polo shirt eg one from a ladies range

Pussinboots25 · 14/11/2019 20:17

@Darkstar4855 I will have to enquire about this thank you! That would be a relief

Nobody would give a bigger person a uniform that gapes everywhere and tell them to just put a couple of panels in.

and everybody agrees that you can't wear a uniform too small, but that anyone can manage one too big - even a "bigger person" could be given a uniform too big for them... Hmm

Pussinboots25 · 14/11/2019 20:19

@VardySheWrote I found your initial comment rude. But never mind ey

@VardySheWrote it’s not about being able to wear the uniform, why should you have to if it doesn’t fit you??? Especially in a job where I’m supposed to look professional

Have you checked the label to make sure you have the right size? I would have expected a small to fit a size 8 so maybe a little loose but not how you describe. Ask them to pay to have it taken in.

Pussinboots25 · 14/11/2019 20:22

Yep it’s a small but possibly labelled wrong? Will speak to them tomorrow Grin

myself2020 · 14/11/2019 20:23

@VardySheWrote depends on how much too big. a petite size 6 women in a size 18 uniform (or similar) looks ridiculous and it’s actually a risk of accident as you get caught everywhere. altering it means taking the garment completely apart, amending every single piece, and putting it back together. takes forever (i’ve had to do it)

Happysummer2020 · 14/11/2019 20:23

Just be mindful that this is a new job and you want to start off on the right note.

Please just speak with them about a possible solution rather than refusing to wear it as that will flag you as a potential problem employee.

Pussinboots25 · 14/11/2019 20:24

@Happysummer2020 I won’t refuse to wear it haha, I wouldn’t dare Grin they have been great so far so will chat to them in the morning

OP I absolutely understand. I work for the NHS and we got issued fleeces and the small was way too big for me and looked completely ridiculous and I felt frumpy and uncomfortable. Asked for a XS but was told nope, you can make do. BUT a colleague had a fleece that was too small for her and was of course allowed to order a bigger size. Well of course I took this up with HR and was allowed a smaller one!
Like others have said, can the linen/sewing room alter it?

Pussinboots25 · 14/11/2019 20:28

@captainprincess I will be asking them tomorrow. I’m hoping they take one look at me in the uniform and get it sorted Grin

It's completely irrelevant whether an XL person fits in the XL uniform.

The OP's size S is far too large and she feels ridiculous in it with no other size option. What is so difficult for people to understand about that or are they being deliberately arsey?

Lifeiscrazy6 · 14/11/2019 20:34

I’d say they should alter it. Turn this on it’s head- if they gave a very overweight person their largest sized uniform and it was far too small and they said- ‘sorry, that’s all we can provide,’ I’m sure people would think it was inappropriate.
If they want you to wear a uniform, they should provide one that fits.

KateFoster · 14/11/2019 20:35

Omg- Of course YABU- You sound like a spoilt brat straight out of school

Aridane · 14/11/2019 20:35

Other members similar size to me don’t seem to look ridiculous like I do

Whic suggests it's a mislabelled product (or you are paranoid)

@KateFoster kids at school get fitting uniforms. you wouldn’t send a reception child in a size 9-10?
people have a right to look respectable in their uniform

Lifeiscrazy6 · 14/11/2019 20:38

@KateFoster there’s no need for that

Pussinboots25 · 14/11/2019 20:40

@KateFoster I won’t even tell you what you sound like... Grin

@Aridane I hope mislabelled product. I didn’t think to suggest this on the phone earlier but I will tomorrow.
