AIBU to refuse to wear my work uniform?

Hi, sorry this is a very boring AIBU. I recently got a new job and filled out a sheet regarding uniform. The options are small, medium, large and extra large and I picked small (I’m a size 6/8 and very petite)

The uniform came today and I tried it on when I got home, it is HUGE! The polo shirt is so long it almost goes to my knees and and the jacket could fit me in twice. I look absolutely ridiculous. AIBU to refuse to wear the uniform? They have told me they don’t do extra small Confused

I’m certainly not shouting, just stating my thoughts on bullying comments .

MrsRhubarb · 16/11/2019 14:40

I can well believe OP. When I worked in healthcare they ordered me a polo shirt when I was pregnant as my tunic was getting a bit on the snug side. It was absurd. The short sleeves came down past my elbows and the overall length came down to my knees. I was about a size 10 (ah, those were the days!) and 5'2". Luckily I went straight to the office and didn't even have to say anything, they took one look and said I could just wear a plain tshirt of my own.

HappyHammy · 16/11/2019 14:45

OP said herself she would upload a picture.

OverByYer · 16/11/2019 15:37

I wonder why she hasn’t come back to do that?Hmm

Motoko · 16/11/2019 15:47

I don't care if she posts a picture or not, I'd just like to hear what they said at work when she went in yesterday, and if it was a case of mislabelling (easily found out, by comparing hers with another top labelled small), and if it was sorted out.

OverByYer · 16/11/2019 15:55

Yes I was wondering how the OP got on

Liketoshop · 16/11/2019 17:24

This is so petty. Leave, work elsewhere or alter the uniform. You knew what you'd be wearing, I was given a male set of scrubs... No difference other than no darts to shape tunic top and too baggy but I couldn't care less.

Ferret27 · 16/11/2019 17:44

We had this at work and lots of us were unhappy and refused to wear it... we came up with other options though ... go in with a solution not just a moan about the problem ... and they will listen ... if you are being helpful

Biggobyboo · 16/11/2019 17:47

I bet the uniform handbook says that staff should look smart too! Impossible for the OP.

She shouldn’t have to pay for alterations, especially not in the NHS.

Someone wrote that people working with children should expect to look silly! I’m an infant school teacher and manage to look reasonably smart and well-dressed.

Ferret27 · 16/11/2019 17:49

Ps they should offer to pay for alterations if that is the only solution ... do they have a solution for people who are too large as they must not discriminate because of size...

Thankful2020 · 16/11/2019 17:51

Damn! Scrolled all 12 pages for a photo. Hope it’s sorted now OP.

Ferret27 · 16/11/2019 17:53

A photo would potentially out the Op as the uniform would identify the company surely!!!!

ManiacalLapwing · 16/11/2019 18:06

You knew what you'd be wearing Would you say the same to an obese woman if the only sizes available were a womens' small, medium and large?

I'd expect a uniform to be available in a full range of sizes, including a size small enough to fit a petite size 6 woman. They should be able to order a uniform in a small womens' or children's size if a 'unisex' small is too big.

Jeeperscreepers69 · 16/11/2019 19:23

How old are you? 3? Just wear it. Look like a twat and embrace it like a grown up

SummersMumma · 16/11/2019 19:24

Just came to the end to find a conclusion.
Hope it worked out in the end x

snickers69 · 16/11/2019 19:28

Where it and if you look that ridiculous I’m sure the company will rectify

snickers69 · 16/11/2019 19:29

Wear!!!

Runnerduck34 · 16/11/2019 20:01

Hope you got it sorted OP. I had a similar problem in a previous job, had to wear a polo shirt that came in unisex sizing the only size they had in stock was xl. I'm 5'2'' and it was massive, came to mid thigh, and was shapeless and baggy, i looked awful in it and although I'm not vain I did feel uncomfortable wearing it and it just made me want to sink into a hole and hide, sadly I had to wait a year before they replenished stocks from their supplier and gave me the right size! I think appearances do matter and if something is badly fitting and unflattering it will effect your self esteem and confidence which may also effect your performance. Uniforms should make staff feel proud not humiliated.

Jeeperscreepers69 · 16/11/2019 20:20

Wouldnt advise uploading pics of work uniform. We arnt allowed uniforms in any pictures at all. You will be sacked.

Happyher · 16/11/2019 20:57

Is it PPE? Does the large coat affect the way you carry out your job. Have another word with them and point out nicely it doesn’t enhance their reputation if they can’t find clothes that fit their staff. Maybe they could ask the supplier if they can source a smaller size.

chrisie16 · 17/11/2019 01:19

I'd be inclined to wear it, just so they could see how ridiculous you're going to look. Is this the image they're trying to achieve? They should try so much harder! It's not your fault you're the size that you are. I expect you're a fully grown adult, same as me. I'm 4" 11" and 6.5 stone, on a good day, with the wind behind me. I'm bored, with having to cut labels out of my clothes, because they show the age. It does nothing, for my Street Cred, to meet an 11 year old, wearing the same as me. Hey ho.

Everydayishistorytomorrow · 17/11/2019 08:20

Why not take something to work in very similar colours and maybe style and wear the uniform as it is. When they see how ridiculous it looks ask them if you can wear what you have brought in and show them. Ask them to see if they can order something in your size that would be suitable. This way you are not refusing but also showing the problem visually which they may understand better.

Esspee · 17/11/2019 09:17

Hate it when OP doesn't come back.

Harls1969 · 17/11/2019 11:29

Snazzy belt, FM boots and rock it as a dress! 😁. Some of these comments though...😳

matcatwomanheresheis · 17/11/2019 11:49

What a fuss over nothing.
If the t-shirts are big, then everyone’s will probably be big.
Just show up and show them.
It’s not play school.
