Am I being unreasonable to take my burley neighbour up on his offer to lift and shove this car 3m down the road, so that I can at least access the left hand side of my drive?! It's been there since 1pm yesterday...

This exact thing happened to me the other week. EXACTLY. And my car was on the drive. I only popped to the loo, and in the 2 minutes I was away, a car had pulled up - covering 80% of my driveway exit and making it IMPOSSIBLE for me to drive off my driveway, (if I had needed to,) and I had no idea who had put the car there, or where they were.

Then half an hour later, a woman scuttled up the road (don't know where she'd been,) and jumped in the car and drove off. I was so gobsmacked I didn't actually say anything.

I did take a photo of her car/numberplate though. If she'd hadn't come back, I would have called 101 because she totally blocked me in. If I had had an important appointment to go to, I could have missed it.

There were at LEAST a dozen other places along the road where she could have parked (blocking NO-ONE,) but she parked right across my drive.

Fucking batshit.

Indecisivelurcher · 12/11/2019 19:08

@littlehappyhippo bit worried what your bros will do if they get their suits dirty, will I be held responsible? The car is 2002 so pretty old, rust can stain... Can I choose these other bros instead? I reckon they could handle it...

Although tbf they are wearing sparkling white, so maybe that's not a good call 🤔

How long has it been untaxed? The police only have powers to remove untaxed vehicles if it's been two months and a day or longer. If not it will have to be the DVLA.

We had one parked across the street last year, not blocking anyone in but parking is a nightmare round here at the best of times! I reported it to the DVLA AND the police to see who would be fastest - the police won and it was gone 3 days later!

Although if it's blocking you in I'm surprised the police are waiting that long before trying to contact the keeper, I'm a police call handler and I'd do that straight away then let you know if I've had any luck.

littlehappyhippo · 12/11/2019 19:18

@Indecisivelurcher

YEP, those guys in red and white will do a good job! Grin As you say, you wouldn't wanna be held responsible for the suits of da bruvvers getting dirty! Grin

Lunafortheloveogod · 12/11/2019 19:23

Get him to move it before the police pop out.. if they drive by to “take a look” and it’s not on the double yellows and tomorrow it’s mystically migrated they’ll assume the owner moved it and possibly that you’re just moaning and the car moves daily.

AlexaAmbidextra · 12/11/2019 19:24

Why on earth are you dithering? Take your neighbour up on his offer now.

StoneofDestiny · 12/11/2019 19:27

You can report it online for being untaxed. Ring the non urgent police number too

They will shift it for you

safariboot · 12/11/2019 19:30

YANBU.

Though unless the owner's enough of a halfwit to forget the handbrake, moving it might be easier said than done. Be careful not to damage it. And tempting though it is, I wouldn't push it onto the double yellows. You don't want to end up in trouble yourself because of the CF!

Police usually won't do anything if you're blocked out, only if you're blocked in.

JasonPollack · 12/11/2019 19:33

YABU for not including a pic of your burly neighbour...

AdobeWanKenobi · 12/11/2019 19:34

I dont think this is true if its obstructing a dropped kerb

@dementedpixie yes, it is.
It's only illegal to park over a dropped kerb if there is a vehicle on the driveway. You are then prohibiting access to a carriageway.

Otterseatpuffinsdontthey · 12/11/2019 19:36

It's illegal for an un-taxed vehicle to be on the public highway. Can also presume (?) that it's not MOT'd/insured.
Another question - how did come to be there? (untaxed vehicle being driven).
I would hazard a guess that it could be stolen/abandoned.

dementedpixie · 12/11/2019 19:36

I think it depends where you live. Can you direct me to the info saying it's only illegal if a vehicle is on the drive

namina · 12/11/2019 19:38

Definitely get him to push it how inconsiderate 😩

MintyMabel · 12/11/2019 19:50

It isn't illegal to obstruct a dropped kerb unless a car is in the driveway already. If there is then they are causing an obstruction and that is

sigh

If you don’t actually know something, don’t post it. This is rubbish. It is equally as obstructing to stop someone going in to their drive as it is to stop them coming out of it.

Nat6999 · 12/11/2019 19:51

Get your neighbour to push it on the double yellows, then take a picture of the car, a screenshot of the no tax & post it on your local police site, they love a dumped untaxed car & notify the DVLA that it has been dumped, they will clamp it & put stickers on it for about 48 hours, then take it away to their compound, the owner has 7 days to claim it & pay for towing & the compound, plus a fine or it is crushed.

Indecisivelurcher · 12/11/2019 19:54

The police were spotted doing a drive by nosy earlier, so I'm leaving it where it is for at least a day to give them an opportunity to sort! And keep my nose clean!!!

My council tickets those parking over dropped kerbs regardless of if my car is in the drive. They used to get plenty of income from my driveway but now there are double yellows I am lucky the CFs have stopped. But three senior traffic dudes from my council confirmed that it was not a legal park in our borough even without the double yellows because it was outside of the marked parking bays.

Have you checked with your parking department in your borough? You can always get them extra tickets as well as police action!! Oh joy!

Accountant222 · 12/11/2019 20:07

I reported an untaxed car on my Mother's road, police didn't want to know and told me to report to dvla, which I did, it's still in situ 18 months later.

Indecisivelurcher · 12/11/2019 20:07

Update!!!! It's gone! Heard the car start, legged it downstairs, car turned around at the end of the road then accelerated past, stereotypical spotty teenager in a beany smirking out the window! I feel more cross now than before, where is my closure?! My vindication?! Where is mumsnets vindication?!!!

Winesalot · 12/11/2019 20:13

there must be a lesson here!

mumof2masterofnone · 12/11/2019 20:16

Told you you should have blocked it in! Blush

Otterseatpuffinsdontthey · 12/11/2019 20:25

You still have all the details of that (untaxed) vehicle Wink

randomchap · 12/11/2019 21:57

You still have all the details of that (untaxed) vehicle

This, report it. If it's untaxed, it's likely to be uninsured and possibly no MOT. Get it off the road

TheReluctantCountess · 12/11/2019 22:57

I agree. It shouldn’t be on the road. Blocking your drive is an inconvenience, but an uninsured and possibly unroadworthy car is a liability.
