To think that being in a high tax bracket doesn't mean you work 'harder'

I'm so so sick of reading about people who welcome the Tory's tax reduction for high earners because of course they 'work hard' and why should they be penalised.
AIBU to think that even though you work HARD you don't always earn a lot? I genuinely think that if you earn more you should contribute more.
I'm a nurse married to a paramedic. Neither of us are paying the higher tax rate.... obviously we need to work harder???? 😡

Nurses, paramedics and other jobs that pay below the higher tax bracket do require hard work. But also so do the jobs that are within the higher tax bracket. How do you think they earned that salary? By slacking their entire career?

My OH is in the higher tax bracket but he put himself through university, secured a good graduate job, took professional exams for 4 years, became chartered and even now he easily does 70+ hour weeks.

I'm fed up of posts like these, if you don't like how much you earn, do something about it.

Personally I think we should adopt a tax system like Hong Kong, everyone pays the same tax rate regardless of earnings. It's also a much simpler system and they don't have as many people trying to avoid tax like in the UK and taking advantage of a very complex system.

Most of my friends are higher rate tax payers - they never complain about how hard they work or how much tax they pay. They consider themselves very fortunate.

I’d be happier to pay more tax IF I could see the money being spent where it is supposed to be, ie on the most vulnerable in society, better education, sort out inefficiencies in the nhs for example. But I don’t trust the government to do these things, look at how much money has been wasted on Brexit. So no, not happy to pay higher taxes until we can see some real value for money.

I don't complain about paying more tax but I do complain about how complex they've (mainly David Cameron) have made things to increase taxes without increasing the headline top tax rate. E.g. losing child benefit if a single parent earns more than 50k (but not if two parents earn that in combination), selective removal of the lowest tax band (creating tax traps where you earn more but take home less), reducing pension allowances as you earn more (rather than capping the allowance) and more.

Progressive tax doesn't have to be complex.Top rate tax payers are 1.2% of the population but contribute 30% of public money. Personally I consider it my duty to make a big contribution, but don't try and sneak it out of me.
