Well come on... it has hasn’t it?

I know it’s been done to death “I remember when all was fields, joules and shark Hoovers” but Aibu to say... last month or so...

Or am I just getting old?

Why has the demographic changed?

Penis Beaker for one and the DM readers.

pictish · 09/11/2019 21:52

I’m as caustic as the next viper on...but not over SPAG or the use of ‘disapproved’ terms and expressions.
‘Yabu for putting xx at the end of your post. Netmums is that —> way.”
Fuck off.

ALemonyPea · 09/11/2019 21:54

I agree op. The thing that's annoying me the most is when the app posts an issue, then follows it with "fine, no problem" or "fine, whatever" the. Proceeds to say exactly why it isn't fine and is an issue.

I've notice a lot more fcking btch boocks as well. One of the things I like about MN is that you can swear without it being blocked. If you don't like swearing and have to it out, then the site probably isn't for your sweet little heart.

ALemonyPea · 09/11/2019 21:54

*then proceeds

HotSince82 · 09/11/2019 22:04

Ah, the facade of exclusivity is slipping and thus, unsettling the natives......GrinGrinGrin

LolaSmiles · 09/11/2019 22:13

Why has the demographic changed? This used to be a very middle class yummy mummy hangout.
I think it depends on the threads you're on.

For example according to the yummy mummy criteria, I'm really not affleunt or middle class enough for MN, but also being of a working class background and saying there's a difference between working class and chav has been enough for the Hunbots to come out in force full of frothy outrage about how nobody should ever say chav because saying chav is a thing is classist sneering (and you also shouldn't say anything is tacky, or common either).

There's still the Boden/joules / what tutor should we get for our 7 year old club here and people who think they are poor because they have to cut back to afford private school.

But there's also a more broad middle ground.

MintyMabel · 09/11/2019 23:00

Is this just the regular reminder that people looking for support aren't welcome unless they follow some unwritten rule of how they must act, write, respond?

It is amazing how Mumsnet users seem to pride themselves on not being overly nice and anyone who is just isn't welcome.

I probably wouldn't last 5 minutes without being banned from there, but it's just awful how a group of people who "speak" differently are treated with such disdain and that the ethos/ dynamic of the site is somehow threatened by it.

I wonder how many of you make newcomers who are different feel that unwelcome in real life.

NoSauce · 09/11/2019 23:02

There’s a huge amount of support if you look.

Bottleup · 09/11/2019 23:46

It used to be a place of intelligent debate and not a place to seek validation.

meganxz · 10/11/2019 00:00

I'm really curious, can someone describe to me the "ideal mumsnetter" please?

NoSauce · 10/11/2019 04:54

It used to be a place of intelligent debate and not a place to seek validation

And that is the reason it’s gone down hill. Not the fact some people can’t spell. It’s the inane thread after thread. Am I pregnant? My neighbour is a CF! I’m sick of my twat of a lazy husband. My MIL is a bitch.

It’s depressing.

PhilCornwall1 · 10/11/2019 05:04

You can't even have an "Aibu to lock my children in the coal shed" thread anymore

No, that's never an unreasonable thing to do. We all need some peace and quiet sometimes! Grin

PhilCornwall1 · 10/11/2019 05:11

@PortiaCastis

I shall quote my late Grandmother who proclaimed you are not qualified to criticise me unless your are perfect my dear and nobody is perfect

I like that one!!

Mummaofmytribe · 10/11/2019 06:18

turquoise88 I originally clicked on the thread as I read it neth-uns, and thought it was some colloquial expression for being down in the dumps.
I was intrigued, thought that's a great word. Never heard it before.. Read the OP and was very disappointed! Feeling right down in the neth-uns now

meditrina · 10/11/2019 07:27

"It used to be a place of intelligent debate"

I haven't seen a long thread about foreign affairs for ages.

TheCanterburyWhales · 10/11/2019 07:55

Frouby- the never ending totes hilarious sagas are, I suppose, and how I look at them, an easy way to spot a saddo with creative writing aspirations and too much time on their hands.
There could be an online masterclass in how to do it...

  1. Choose one totally random object or person - for example, a coat, a patio, a foreign old lady
  2. Add in next door neighbours who would make Jack Nicholson look like Miss Marple
  3. Thread 1 must include physical positioning of random object or person and a good idea is to have it/them either on your property or at least visible from it.
  4. The row
  5. The development (leads to thread 2) in response to strangely communal incontinence in the vicinity of laptops from your fans) Something totally, utterly and literally (meant in the true sense of the word) unbelievable.

etc etc etc.

PS make sure you name change every couple of months once your bollocks has died a death and start a thread saying "does anyone know what happened to the moving Christmas decoration on the patio laid by the elderly Jspanese house thief?" Wink

SafetyAdvice0FeedWhenAgitated · 10/11/2019 08:28

@TheCanterburyWhales 😂

SafetyAdvice0FeedWhenAgitated · 10/11/2019 08:30

It used to be a place of intelligent debate

Now it's a place where question about chinese takeaway ends up with racism row🤷

ethelfleda · 10/11/2019 08:45

I voted YANBU.
But in reality, I’m far too polite to actually point it out to the offending individual.
And I kind of know I’m BU for agreeing with you...
But, well, it’s fucking irritating.

DragonontheWagon · 10/11/2019 08:49

I'm really curious, can someone describe to me the "ideal mumsnetter" please?

Someone who's educated, not necessarily university but can engage in a debate.
Someone who is robust and doesn't get offended at the slightest thing.
Someone who does not feel the need to ask inane questions just to try and feel valid, if it doesn't sit comfortably with you then it probably isn't a good place to be.
Just don't start a thread on something, whinge and whine, ignore all the other comments about what they should do, rinse and repeat every few weeks. woman with the castle bed I think it is who likes to put her step-child to sleep in the landing I'm looking at you

That's it really, I can ignore some SPaG despite being a total pedant about it because my phone and iPad can make me look like a dick quite frequently. I just liked threads that weren't total whinge fests about whatever drivel they were offended about that day. I don't particularly care how much you earn, what school you went to, just that I can engage with you.

God I sound like a pompous cow with that word vomit episode Grin

It used to be a place of intelligent debate When was that? There have always been some interesting discussions and some very funny threads but there was a party line and anyone diverting from it was jumped on. (particularly regarding advice on friendships and relationships). Not exactly a debate. Isn't it good to have more diversity? Just don't open threads that look boring to you. Some people on this thread seem to think they are so superior, it must be great to be so intelligent and to know the answers to everything.

PortiaCastis · 10/11/2019 12:35

Bitching about other posters is not intelligent debate either

NerrSnerr · 10/11/2019 13:33

Do you mean intelligent debate like a thread called 'It's all gone a bit nethuns' op?

pictish · 10/11/2019 13:42

Touché.
