Should Mumsnet be a closed forum for should be be inclusive for anyone to join?

Bloody hell, that makes no sense.

Should it be a closed forum or should it be inclusive for anyone to join?

TheCanterburyWhales · 08/11/2019 21:42

Good to see Muphry coming into play as usual Wink

At least back in the day OPs probably wouldn't have hidden behind cowardly name changes to be bitches about those they consider inferior and not welcome.

Do you feel particularly good about yourself, OP? Now that you've gobbed off about how the thick incomers shouldn't be on here?

What a deeply unpleasant person you must be.

Inthemoment38 · 08/11/2019 21:43

I'm still laughing at someone's comments about the "barbarihun invasion" from a thread like this a few weeks ago

DragonontheWagon · 08/11/2019 21:50

Nerr surprisingly enough, working class people can have a high iq too and (brace yourself) be eloquent too... That's all we're asking.

FluffytheGoldfish · 08/11/2019 21:51

I have noticed hun is getting much more common. It jumps out at me as an insult rather than being nice due to the sectarian connotation.

DragonontheWagon · 08/11/2019 21:51

Ffs my last comment makes me look like a thicko, I'll gracefully bow out now 🙄

TheCanterburyWhales · 08/11/2019 22:01

For research purposes, I just did an AS on the word "hun" during 2019.
I got bored very quickly but can confirm there are a lot of MNers being totes hilarious with their "you OK hun" sidesplitting wisecracks, but only about two examples of posters using the word to, you know, be nice to someone having a bit of a hard time.

NerrSnerr · 08/11/2019 22:08

What if someone is having a hard time? Maybe they've had some devastating news about their pregnancy or they have just found out a friend has died and they use the word hun in one of their replies and maybe end their posts with xxx. Is that allowed or should they fuck off back to Nethuns?

Just wondering what the rules are?

Stealthymcstealth · 08/11/2019 22:15

Get over to the feminism board, nothing nethuns about it! Amazing intelligent women taking a stand against horrific atrocities most of hadn't even realised were happening.

ViciousJackdaw · 09/11/2019 00:11

horrific atrocities

The removal of the Venus symbol from sanitary towel packaging is hardly comparable to the Holocaust, Hiroshima, 9/11 or genocide in Rwanda.

ShinyGiratina · 09/11/2019 00:13

There has been a recent shift in excusing and minimising seriously poor male behaviour. I'm not sure what the source of that is.

Humour and obviously "light hearted" has been failing for some time and I do wonder if it is connected to the general political tone and state of life over recent years, especially since a certain referendum.

Quality of communication matters. I don't challenge people on SPAG, I generally just move on if something is painfully difficult to comprehend and just mangled. The swearing has diminished. One of the distinctive things I liked about MN that encouraged me to stick around was the refreshingly open swearing and absence of filters.

Cauliflowerhead · 09/11/2019 00:15

Yeah it has. I’ve had a break for a year and can see the difference. Penis beaker has a lot to answer for.

I love love love that the fem boards are still here - although heavily moderated - they are still clinging on!

easyandy101 · 09/11/2019 00:15

It's always been shite

Cauliflowerhead · 09/11/2019 00:17

shiny Gin I hear you

Dongdingdong · 09/11/2019 00:23

Oh FFS - not this thread again. They seem to be popping up at least once a week now. Can’t we get back to the important stuff, like parking problems and MIL issues?

saraclara · 09/11/2019 00:25

Wow. What snobbery. So women who aren't as well educated aren't welcome here? No matter if they have personal problems and need support, or have something else to offer, if their spelling and grammar aren't good enough they should know their place and leave?

No, I'm not a netmum, just a relatively new poster. But this thread really depresses me. It's tribalism and makes me think that what's happening to this country regarding division and polarisation is going to end up spreading into every corner of the internet. Inclusiveness is going to be a thing of the past.

Courtney555 · 09/11/2019 00:32

Have been on MN years and years. Under a different name originally.

I remember posting a thread like this about 6-7yrs ago.

How I would love MN to return to the "state" it was back then, now I see how far the horse has bolted.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 09/11/2019 00:45

Vicious I’m sure Stealthy was more likely talking about using “sex game gone wrong” being used as a successful defence to murder women rather than sanitary towel packaging Hmm

Cauliflowerhead · 09/11/2019 00:52

saraclara oh Christ. Your post proves the point exactly!

PrincessMaryaBolkonskaya · 09/11/2019 01:14

I agree with Shiny there’s really been a noticeable shift excusing men’s shitty behaviour. I’m tired and can’t think of coherent examples. But I remember there was a woman being abused - and the first few posters basically said she was asking for it.

“DH doesn’t fancy me” instead of a resounding “LTB” is met with a few “treat urself to a make over xx” type comments as well as “LTB”

Trouble is this gets lost on threads like this, everyone’s too busy accusing us of sneering and being grammar snobs.

satanstoenailsandwich · 09/11/2019 01:18

' being told that if I can't say anything nice then don't say anything at all. '

I was told that on a thread where an 'am I pregnant thread' - poster was uploading pictures day after day of almost invisible lines on crap tests (negative on other tests) convinced that she was pregnant and getting the usual 'I didn't get a line until I was 2 weeks late' etc. I told her (kindly!) that if she were pregnant with a viable pregnancy it would show clearly on all tests and that this wasn't her month.

She sent me a very very long message full of vitriol about how I was a stupid bitch who knew nothing about infertility (I have had 4 miscarriages) and you don't get lines for no reason etc. I can't even remember half of it but some of the subsequent posts were like 'yas Queen go you' Confused many posts that followed were sensible MN posts though telling OP I was trying to be kind but that didn't register...I left the thread as I was upsetting the OP but checked back in and of course it turned out she wasn't pregnant at all.

MN is the only place a woman can tell the truth without being the bad guy and I really don't want to see that being taken from us.

satanstoenailsandwich · 09/11/2019 01:20

'The removal of the Venus symbol from sanitary towel packaging is hardly comparable to the Holocaust, Hiroshima, 9/11 or genocide in Rwanda.'

No. But the experimental medical castration of children is pretty bad.

VanyaHargreeves · 09/11/2019 01:33

Though I don't disagree that the closure of NetMums has brought some challenging posters, some of the posts about why they don't "fit in" are very snobby.

If anything I think some of the Huns threads I've seen the OPs were in dire need of a bit of Straight Talk that they likely don't get in Facebookland.

Tartyflette · 09/11/2019 01:42

TBH, I rarely bother with the 'hun-ny' posts because they don't tend to be very interesting.
But we still get real gems here, to wit, the thread about knitting in the last couple of days. The responses were priceless. I truly laughed out loud. (Although I didn't spray coffee/wine/gin over my keyboard.)
Yet at the same time it was quite concerning and more than a little sad.

JaneJeffer · 09/11/2019 01:59

Oh FFS - not this thread again. They seem to be popping up at least once a week now.
Almost daily. I've been here a long time and MN is what you make it IMO.
