Friends, the one where we get annoyed

Light hearted!

I like Friends but I often have moments of getting annoyed by it.

Rachel and Monica would never have been best friends at high school. One was a popular cheerleader type and the other was an overweight, immature nerd ... you’re telling me that in an American high school these two girls would have been besties?

Joey is loved by everyone, yet he’s a sexist player that disregards and disrespects women and he’s thick as pig shit with no job - but he’s so lovable 🤔

Ross is the bad guy in the whole Carol and Susan thing yet his wife cheated on him, Susan insisted that the baby was as much hers as it was his (??!!) and he’s expected to just accept it? I hate Susan!!

What annoys you about Friends?

(Before anyone starts, no I don’t make a habit of calling people fat nerds but the program specifically plays on this which is why I said it)

There's a line in one episode where Rachel's has too much to drink and Joey tests the 'how you doing?' line on her. She responds positively, and he tells someone (Ross?) to keep an eye on her as she's clearly had too much to drink (so is susceptible to preying men). I don't think he's a date rapist.

I'm kind of surprised by some of the porn comments, and how we're so much more enlightened about things these days.

What....?

Yes, porn is referenced a fair bit in Friends. Probably not ideal. But it's all relatively 'soft', missionary, so-tacky-it's-funny Good Will Humping, Lawrence of Alabia porn.

Give me 90s, VHS, unthreatening Friends porn over what people are dealing with these days, any day of the week.

was a huge Mondler shipper.

Err, what....?

I also hate how Ok they all were with Ross dating one of his students.

That's not how I remember it at all.

They took the piss out of him for the entire duration of the relationship, and that's pretty much why he ended up dumping her.

I love friends so much, I could watch it all day Grin BUT the one thing that annoys me so much is when Monica is catering for Richard's party and he asks if Monica is coming, surely as he's best friends with her dad he should know what she looks like already!

The whole point though,is that she has lost a phenomenal amount of weight, and is completely unrecognisable!

I never got why monica wasnt invited to rachels wedding if they were such good friends, but when rachel left barry she went to her for help. Also why she had to be introduced to chandler when they had clearly met lots of times

Huge mondler shipper = big fan of Monica and Chandler as a couple.... may have wasted vast amounts of time obsessing online and possibly also arguing with people who were obsessed with Ross and Rachel (don’t judge me too harshly, I was a teenager! Blush)

The thing that annoys me the most about friends (which I do still love!) is the Monica fat suit thing.

As has been said, the way it's talked about is as if she was an absolutely enormous lump who did nothing but eat all day long. In reality she was chubby and overweight but not to gargantuan proportions. And then regular Monica is incredibly slim, but that's just perceived as normal.

I can forgive the continuity errors in the pilot because it is just the pilot, and they probably hadn't thought ten seasons down at that point!

One of the things that annoys me the most is in the pilot episode Monica introduces Rachel to Chandler like they had never met- then we get 10 years of flashbacks to how they all went to high school together and new each other quite well.

To be fair, it was the pilot so the producers wouldn't have known whether it would be a hit or not.

Great. Thanks for coming on the thread to share that. Confused

Huge mondler shipper

Why 'shipper' though? Don't understand what it means.

@Petrichor11 I agree! I much preferred Monica and Chandler as a couple to Ross and Rachel. I thought it was a brilliant pairing.

I also thought Rachel and Joey were better suited than Ross and Rachel as well though. I was really rooting for them to get together in Barbados.

I think like 'worshipper' ?

I really loved Monica and Chandler together but I also loved her with Richard.

Petrichor11 · 08/11/2019 19:38

Shipper is from relationship I think? It’s only ever used in relation to pairings (it’s used throughout online fandom world, not just Friends)

Report
QueenOfTheAndals · 08/11/2019 19:38

Isn't it more like "relationshipper"? So if you "ship" two characters then it means you want them to get together.

QueenOfTheAndals · 08/11/2019 19:39

Snap @Petrichor11!

Report
BobbyNewport · 08/11/2019 19:39

@PrincessHoneysuckle noooo!! I liked Richard as a character but he was far too old for her and knew her as a little girl. Yuck!

Trumpleton · 08/11/2019 19:40

Friends is comfort tv for me but I hate some of the casual homophobia, the men are all horrified at the thought of being mistaken for being gay, makes me cringe and wouldn't be done now at all.
Also hate the fat suit stuff. Lazy comedy.
And why does Monica get an invite to Mindy and Barry's wedding when she wasn't even imvited to the original Rachel and Barry wedding?! (Saw this one recently and was annoyed!)

Report
BobbyNewport · 08/11/2019 19:42

@Trumpleton agree about the fatsuit. My husband actually prefers 'fat' Monica because he says she seems so much happier when she's bigger (I think he means with the dancing and such).

Oh!
Thanks!
So I shipped Pacey and Joey in the 90s too Grin

It means you want them to be in a relationship. You ship them, therefore you are a shipper.

I loved friends as a teen and thought Rachel and Joey would be perfect together.

OneTwoThreeDoeRayMe · 08/11/2019 20:04

Crikey. People do get invested, then.

I always thought Monica was invited to Barry and Mindy’s wedding as Richard’s plus one?
