Young people should take responsibility for themselves, not the state?

Quote from Jeremy Corbyn - "Think of the young people who are given the subliminal message to look after your own education and look after your own health forget about council housing, make your own way in the world. It’s depressing, it’s unnecessary and it’s all part of the contraction of the public realm and the public state."

I'm not a fan of JC and this statement perfectly sums up why. AIBU to ask why people like this idea without this turning into a bun fight?

I'd love to see a trillion £ put into society. Why not? Where else is it supposed to go? The Cayman Islands?

Ffs. We are a country with a redistributive tax economy.

@AutumnCrow I think we can all agree that it would be nice but it's not free money it has to be borrowed. I personally think it's wildly irresponsible to borrow like that and sign the next generation up to servicing a monstrous debt, just so this generation can have a few a few cushy years until the money / ability to borrow runs out.

The state rely on the people to fund it and its institutions, I am not sure why anyone would feel it is wrong for ordinary citizens regardless of age to expect the state to provide; health care, education, housing etc.

Socialism is the only way forward for equality but yes I "understand" it's a concept that terrifies the well off!

Chattybum · 11/11/2019 07:37

@WagtailRobin yes because socialism has such a flawless track record for bringing equality Hmm

Massive investment in social housing can only be a good thing surely? More housing would force private landlords to up their game as tenants wouldn't be fighting over a grotty house and paying £££.
I think we need to move away from believing that owning your house is the only solution. Yes you have more security but until your mortgage is paid off the house is not yours and can be taken away due to illness, unemployment or divorce. Also later in life you can lose it to pay care home fees.
Home ownership is a pipedream for many people now, yet renting is still seen as 2nd class I think.
Houses should be homes not investments.
