Does anyone have a robotic vacuum cleaner?

I would be interested to hear views from Mums netters on this. We recently visited a "stately home" which had robotic lawnmowers keeping the grass cut short.

It set me thinking that although our garden is not big enough to justify this expenditure, a robotic vacuum cleaner might be affordable.

We recently got a ridiculously expensive roomba, and if something happened to it, I'd replace it tomorrow, it's amazing!

You do need to tidy up first though, mine got stuck on a baby sock the other day and spent quite a while sending me error messages to my mobile phone Grin

TeaAndStrumpets · 12/11/2019 21:23

Our Roomba has swallowed my phone charging cable a couple of times Blush but just kept spitting it out and retreating. The cable hasn't been damaged - my Sebo upright would have chewed it up!

I got the £150 Eufy Amazon deal version that comes with a remote so is not app controlled because of this thread.

He arrived on Sunday & we call him Oofy.
He is my new favourite thing right now & I'm really happy with the amount of dust he collects from under the coffee table, sofas etc... as he trundles round the ground floor of the house.

I have flat woven & short pile wool rugs which he happily climbs on & off on his cleaning journey.

He's also quiet enough I can put him on in the middle of the night as you can't hear him from upstairs or next door.
I can't always hear him if he's in the next room.

My son loves him so much he runs around picking things up to give Oofy a clear path (usually toys he's left there in the first place) so the house is actually tidier & I can feel a difference in the air quality (house seems to get seriously dusty since they built an incinerator a few miles downhill & upwind a few years back) after just these couple of days.

Now I just really need to find a robot mop - one with a water tank for less than £150.

If these were less than £100 I'd get one for upstairs too.

TheHootiestOwl · 12/11/2019 23:03

My Eufy has just been ordered!

Peacocking · 12/11/2019 23:31

We've had roombas for years and also have a flymo robot mower. Both absolutely amazing.

magoria · 13/11/2019 17:22

Mine is called Mr Sucky.

The lawnmower is Robochop.

Finchy19 · 13/11/2019 17:43

We have one. He goes on a complete rampage. Eats all the socks, steals things and hoardes them under the sofa. Quite a good little cleaner but just cleans when he fancies it rather than listening to the schedule I programmed. Grin

GuppytheCat · 13/11/2019 17:44

Eats all the socks, steals things and hoards them under the sofa -- I have a dog for that, Finchy!

Finchy19 · 13/11/2019 19:01

@GuppytheCat we don't need a dog now!

Vulpine · 13/11/2019 19:04

Are they only really effective for open plan places though?

Finchy19 · 13/11/2019 19:06

We have living room and then kitchen not open plan but we don't close the door and he manages just fine, needs a hand to get in the conservatory though. Hasn't mastered the step.

LaurieFairyCake · 15/11/2019 15:38

Place marking

TheBrockmans · 15/11/2019 19:04

He is here and picks up a surprising amount of dust. I think it will encourage the family to be a bit tidier. Although the eufy comes with barrier strips these have to be stuck down with tape. It seems though a blanket or coat bunched over an area is enough to detur him. Although you can name it unfortunately you have to say Robo vac start cleaning rather than Boris start cleaning. Was looking forward to that.

TheHootiestOwl · 15/11/2019 20:06

I’m unpacking my new Eufy right now! I’m so excited!

TeaAndStrumpets · 15/11/2019 20:47

Congratulations both of you! You will be horrified but thrilled at how often the dust compartment needs emptyingWink

Profilejacket · 15/11/2019 22:13

Just a word of warning. The other day I heard a funny noise coming from upstairs and went up to find that somehow eufy had somehow turned my hairdryer on Shock
My fault for leaving it on the floor and not switching it off at the plug but could have been disastrous if I hadn’t been at home.

Eufy had slunk back to his charging point and didn’t seem too contrite about it.

TeaAndStrumpets · 16/11/2019 09:56

Wow profile that is a good warning, thanks. I would never have imagined that could happen! So easily done.

Profilejacket · 16/11/2019 13:50

I know! I think it must have wedged it against the wall and somehow pushed the button.

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/11/2019 14:08

Nigel is fab. And yes amazing how much crap they eat and box will need emptying each time

Nigel can go from living room, over stair gate if left open to kitchen and back again to playroom

He can do in one go as just had a new battery

But if he runs out he will go home. Recharge for 30m then go back to where he stopped

honeybeetheoneandonly · 16/11/2019 14:13

Any recommendations for a mopping one? We've been looking at getting a robo vac but I would like it to have a mopping function (if it actually works).

Bimbleberries · 16/11/2019 15:09

Which version of the Neato do you have, @Blondeshavemorefun? Do you have one that connects to wifi? The reviews of those sound like they are a bit unreliable. A lot more expensive compared to the Eufy but I like the idea that they can get into corners better, as I have a very small flat, and not a lot of open space, so it wouldn't be very worth it except for one that actually does get into corners and small spaces!

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/11/2019 15:19

No mine is n85. Bout 5yrs old

Way before they did Wi-fi ones

And tbh I prob wouldn’t get a Wi-fi one

Nigel can be put on a timer to go off when out or at night

Or just press him

Bimbleberries · 16/11/2019 15:30

oh I didn't realise they still had timers on the ones that didn't have apps, that's useful. The app ones just keep saying that they disconnect a lot, etc. I'm not sure if the old ones are still avialable, or also if the new ones can be used without the app.

Is it really good for corners and small spaces then? I have a lot of furniture in a very small space, so he'd have to be pretty good and getting around and through small gaps! Very few areas where there are straight lines here!! And several carpets and rugs that he'd have to go up

PlausibleSuit · 16/11/2019 15:34

Intrigued.

Question re the ones that mop as well...

We're in an apartment that's all on one level, which has hard floors in most rooms but carpet in the bedrooms.

Can they be programmed/work out how to mop the hard floors only and vacuum the carpets? I don't want to walk in and find it diligently trying to mop my carpet...

Howmanymorecantherebe · 16/11/2019 17:44

My Eufy (nicknamed slug) came a few days ago! Amazing!!!! Thanks to this thread!

Can't believe the difference he's made already 😊😊😊
