Words that I see on MN that make my teeth itch....

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 05/11/2019 22:44

For some reason, since being on MN I have developed an irrational hatred towards certain words that are overused on here....namely, "tat" and "snacks" and I don't know why, because they are words I've used in the past! Now, ugh.

And also, even though I've used it in the title, I hate the phrase "makes my teeth itch" it's almost as bad as "boils my piss".

Does anyone else have words that MN have put them off using? Or am I just a grumpy old unreasonable bag?

I can cope with all of the above but 'Nom Nom' makes my blood boil!

Or anything that is spelt deliberately wrong to be pronounced in some sort of 'cute' way.

(Also Fur baby - are you three?)

itllneverfitinthecar · 06/11/2019 07:09

Poop.

SinglePringle · 06/11/2019 07:10

‘Bring’ instead of ‘take’: “My hubby (Grin) says he won’t bring me to my baby’s hospital appointment next week. Should I LTB?’

It’s TAKE me to the appointment, TAKE, not bring!

Makes me shout whenever I read or hear it.

The usual:

Little man / Little Princess
‘Hello Mums / Mummies!’
Hun
Hubby and all variations of
‘But that’s just me’ (being fucking twee and smug)
Threads that begin ‘so...’ get ignored

Also hate spends /spendy / chocs / drinkies / yummy (should only be used by an adult if they are trying to persuade a child to eat) / text speak / multiple y’s on the end of words: lovelyyyyyyyy

GaaaaarlicBread · 06/11/2019 07:16

@RomaineCalm that one really gets me !!
I also hate the CF posts ...

thisisallnewtome8 · 06/11/2019 07:17

Gently. Everything is gently tell them this. Gently tell them that. Drives me nuts.

ohhhhlivia · 06/11/2019 07:20

"Goady"

Or, I disagree with you but can't back it up.

ElusiveOrangeTwirl · 06/11/2019 07:21

Marks for Marks and Spencer. Just say M&S.

Picky bits.

DHamster etc.

flowerpowerr · 06/11/2019 07:23

When people say “baby” without putting a “the” in front of it.

E.g. “some fresh air will be good for baby”.

So many people on here seem to do it so I think I’m fighting a losing battle. But it’s awful and so twee!

meyouandlulutoo · 06/11/2019 07:23

The D's do get confusing. I've see DD for daughter and DD for dad, DF for father and DF for fiancé and on it goes.

Lunaballoon · 06/11/2019 07:23

Old gimmer. Casually ageist and rude and no one actually says it in RL!

flowerpowerr · 06/11/2019 07:26

Pudding for dessert. Pudding is a TYPE of dessert

From the OED:

“1.1 mass noun. The dessert course of a meal. ‘What’s for pudding?’”

Nextphonewontbesamsung · 06/11/2019 07:27

"Do you have nothing better to worry about than ... ?"

Yes, of course I have major things in my life to worry about (just like everyone else) but at the moment I am posting about this smaller thing on Mumsnet you unintelligent unimaginative twit.

What would Mumsnet be like if everyone was only allowed to post about their biggest, most pressing number one concern?

Stuckinanutshell · 06/11/2019 07:28

Could/would/should of

Calling dog DDog

Hubby

To boob / boobing

Give your head a wobble

Calling strangers lovely (as in ‘sorry this has happened to you lovely’) and hun.

I’m very picky lol

flowerpowerr · 06/11/2019 07:29

Also cannot stand “make my teeth itch” - sorry OP.

JassyRadlett · 06/11/2019 07:29

‘Cringe’ when not used as a verb.

‘Up yourself/herself/themselves’ - means ‘this person does not fit the narrow model of how I think a person should behave and it makes me feel insecure’

Solasshole · 06/11/2019 07:30

When peoe say they "have the menopause"

Just. Stop. There is no need for the "the" in that sentence.

You don't say someone "has the cardiac disease" or "has the depression". You have menopause or you are going through menopause. There doesn't need to be a "the" between.

This really really irritates me everytime I see it Blush it just sounds soooo wrong.

SinglePringle · 06/11/2019 07:37

I absolutely agree about ‘cringe’ when not used as a verb. It’s awful.

Sux2buthen · 06/11/2019 07:37

'This might be long'
'Sorry if this is long'
Thanks for the heads up, I won't be reading it then

Also
'Thanks for the heads up'

'You mean gender, not sex'

'Did you mean to be so rude?'
Shit comeback in any situation

'The Male gaze'

burritofan · 06/11/2019 07:40

Dessert is just frightful and I actively judge anyone who uses it.

Bits – not just picky bits but "I went to the shop for some food bits", "I fancied some make-up bits" etc. Food and make-up are explanatory enough!

Needs replaced
Yes yes yes. It's all over MN like a rash. Cat needs fed. Baby (ugh, THE baby) needs changed. Dog needs walked. Someone will be along in a minute to say it's dialect but I don't care, it sounds thick.

Pronunciation threads where someone uses "r" to describe a long "a", as in "father", and someone else claims there's no "r" and it descends into madness with people refusing to contemplate that some people don't actively say "r" out loud.

Ddog and Dcat

MarthasGinYard · 06/11/2019 07:43

Out for a 'meal'

Hate it

Dogs eat dog 'meal'

tomatoflower · 06/11/2019 07:44

Luffs instead of love.

I see it on here a lot, most recently someone talking about a female celebrity. "I luffs her". Trying to sound cool but failing.

Soon2BeMumof3 · 06/11/2019 07:45

Not a word but any post that ends with a kiss.

You're talking to internet strangers here, not your mum.

x

MrsExpo · 06/11/2019 07:49

The use of “sat” or “stood” instead of sitting or standing ..... as in “I was sat/stood on a bus .... “ when you were actually sitting/standing on a bus.

Also could/would/should of done this or that, instead of should have.

LLMD · 06/11/2019 07:54

LTB is my biggest hate on here.

“DP forgot to put the bin out today”

“LTB he is an abusive misogynist, do you really want to have kids with someone like this?”

Also, “you don’t have a MIL problem, you have a DH problem” 🙄

Drizzzle · 06/11/2019 07:54

"Does he have form?"
