Words that I see on MN that make my teeth itch....

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 05/11/2019 22:44

For some reason, since being on MN I have developed an irrational hatred towards certain words that are overused on here....namely, "tat" and "snacks" and I don't know why, because they are words I've used in the past! Now, ugh.

And also, even though I've used it in the title, I hate the phrase "makes my teeth itch" it's almost as bad as "boils my piss".

Does anyone else have words that MN have put them off using? Or am I just a grumpy old unreasonable bag?

So agree @Thurmanmurman "‘Give your head a wobble" is just an attempt to patronise the OP.

"Pearl clutching" - just undermining

I have visions of the twats jerking back & forth as they approach, rather than appearing cool.

Yorkies instead of Yorkshire puddings. Usually along the lines of “I knocked up a quick mid week roast. Just slung a chicken in the oven with some roasties, then whacked in a few yorkies at the last minute” to show how casual the

"mental load" when really someone is moaning about time and physical effort spent planning or doing basic chores. The term was invented initially to describe people who have to put on a contrary emotion at work to what they really felt (I.e. customer service people who have to be nice)

Cherrysoup · 10/11/2019 10:10

All of the above plus gobsmacked.

Gobsmacked is very commonly used in my home town. It’s not some strange and unusual word.

Some of the posters on here sound very patronising and intolerant. Do you pick apart everyone’s posts and always double check your own grammar?

Baffled. Never used because you don't understand something, always used as a dig at an OP, who is usually asking for advice about something dreadful. 'Im baffled as to why you dont leave the bastard and are lettling him abuse you and your kids, baffled' DFOD.

Tableclothing · 10/11/2019 10:40

"very dramatic". Patronising way of telling the OP that their feelings are incorrect.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 10/11/2019 11:01

"mental load" when really someone is moaning about time and physical effort spent planning or doing basic chores.

See also “meal planning”. “Is your DH taking on his share of the meal planning OP, or is all the effort left to you?” Posters make it sound only slightly less complicated and marginally more stressful than negotiating Brexit. Does no one just bung a frozen lasagne in the oven and have done with it?

makingmammaries · 10/11/2019 12:40

Poorly. As in ‘I was poorly’, DP was poorly’. In real life it’s always said in a slightly whiny tone, which makes it even worse.

It's amusing how 'household admin' is elevated to being on par with running a FTSE 100 company. You would think 'paying the bills' just involves setting up direct debits for everything and then perhaps reviewing your package once a year to see if there is a better offer elsewhere. But no, it's a herculean task it would seem. Maybe I am doing it wrong

Taking pp suggestion of "meal planning", I propose the catch-all "" to cover the ridiculously fancy meal names people conjure up.

It's always something like "fettuccine all'arrabbiata, with oven-roasted garlic flakes on rye, served with steamed, locally sourced tender greens" (tomato pasta and garlic bread, with microwaved frozen broccoli)

midsomermurderess · 10/11/2019 14:20

Oh, yes, 'poorly'. It's so infantile and whiny.
