Words that I see on MN that make my teeth itch....

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 05/11/2019 22:44

For some reason, since being on MN I have developed an irrational hatred towards certain words that are overused on here....namely, "tat" and "snacks" and I don't know why, because they are words I've used in the past! Now, ugh.

And also, even though I've used it in the title, I hate the phrase "makes my teeth itch" it's almost as bad as "boils my piss".

Does anyone else have words that MN have put them off using? Or am I just a grumpy old unreasonable bag?

Some words are regional colloquialisms though - brew for a hot drink and chipping for knocking on a door....I suppose it depends where the poster is from.
I HATE sentences/replies starting with So...both written and spoken. Also "needs replaced" which I see on here a lot e.g. " I have a work stair carpet that needs replaced". Infuriates me.

Bluesheep8 · 06/11/2019 06:15

CHAPPING for knocking on a door, autocorrect!

Bluesheep8 · 06/11/2019 06:16

Oh ffs, a WORN stair carpet

Moonfacebiggins · 06/11/2019 06:21

Goodies as in 'My favourite Christmas goodies are....'

StealthPolarBear · 06/11/2019 06:25

Both of mine have been mentioned, "give your head a wobble" and "fast forward to now"
I've noticed a lot more mners talking about "wee naps" or "wee snack". I don't know whether to be annoyed or not, if theyre all Scottish I am happy :)

Loosenisous · 06/11/2019 06:26

Every. fucking. week.

These stupid, pointless threads.

These 'make my teeth itch'. Stupid expression btw.

Brefugee · 06/11/2019 06:29

oh god...
spends, spuds (oh god HOW I HATE THAT WORD), naice, pudding (unless an actual pudding), hubby, hubs... so so many

also one who loathes the "think..."
and "pack lunch" - nuke it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure.

Invite used as a noun.
I need a lie down now.

Witchinaditch · 06/11/2019 06:31

It’s a saying I see on here but never heard anyone say it in real life “it boils my piss” it just makes me shudder.

Lilyflower1 · 06/11/2019 06:35

“Pudding for dessert. Pudding is a TYPE of dessert.”

Since I am from WC stick I did not know this until I read many classic and modern novels.

Pudding is used by the middle and upper middle classes to denote desert. It’s probably derived from prep and independent school dinners where steamed stodge was ubiquitous. The word is now therefore, used as a code to express and identify

You could get away with saying desert to modern middle class people (who have been priced out of private education) but do not try ‘sweet’ which will send you into the outer reaches of unacceptability.

Soon2BeMumof3 · 06/11/2019 06:35

I also hate 'treat' especially in relation to something for an adult human.

A 'treat' is for a dog that's learnt to urinate outside or a child who has behaved at a doctors appointment. To hear a grown woman talk about wanting or deserving her 'treat' just seems really demeaning and childish.

Lilyflower1 · 06/11/2019 06:36

Sorry, lost something there.

‘...used to denote middleclassness ...’

Lilyflower1 · 06/11/2019 06:37

Box set.

It’s boxed set.

ballpitbonanza · 06/11/2019 06:41

Bum change/ needs a bum change - you're changing their nappy not their bum!
Boob in relation to breastfeeding
hubby
picky tea/picky bits
I watch a you tuber who commits all these and more.

EarringsandLipstick · 06/11/2019 06:43

I was holding back but @TheMustressMhor requires me to answer 😀

I've never heard anyone in Ireland (where I am) use 'pudding' to refer to a course - here, it's dessert. Pudding is a type of dessert eg sticky toffee pudding, chocolate pudding, Christmas pudding.

But it doesn't bother me as when I read 'pudding' here I know it means 'dessert' in the way I'd use it, and also that typically in the UK, that's the word used, and the majority of posters are in the UK.

(It's like 'tea'. I really like seeing how that's used here. Tea in Ireland is not the evening meal (that's 'dinner'), it's literally a cup of tea, and maybe toast / something small. But I like seeing all the differences)

[that's also why this thread annoys me a bit. There are lots of phrases that irritate me, but people have to be able use what they want, what's normal for them, as pretty much every phrase will annoy someone, somewhere. 🤷🏻‍♀️]

wanderings · 06/11/2019 06:46

Lots of one-syllable adjectives are overused on here: grim, rank, crass, shit, off, especially in thread titles.

Also "little shits".

lotsofoysters · 06/11/2019 06:56

A 'treat' is for a dog that's learnt to urinate outside or a child who has behaved at a doctors appointment.

I think you're mistaking the word "treat" for "reward".

Dictionary definition of treat: noun
an event or item that is out of the ordinary and gives great pleasure.
