Words that I see on MN that make my teeth itch....

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 05/11/2019 22:44

For some reason, since being on MN I have developed an irrational hatred towards certain words that are overused on here....namely, "tat" and "snacks" and I don't know why, because they are words I've used in the past! Now, ugh.

And also, even though I've used it in the title, I hate the phrase "makes my teeth itch" it's almost as bad as "boils my piss".

Does anyone else have words that MN have put them off using? Or am I just a grumpy old unreasonable bag?

'Controlling'is another one - bandied about as an insult.

SwingoutSisterSledge · 05/11/2019 23:07

Ickky.

MrsBobDylan · 05/11/2019 23:08

Not a phrase but the absolute hysteria over putting anything remotely enjoyable to eat in a child's packed lunch. Then the ensuing competition over who gives their kids the least tasty packed lunch and the stealth boasting.

And 'high needs baby', always used when someone has a perfectly healthy, NT child but somehow feels that they are too demanding.

Chocoholic1972 · 05/11/2019 23:08

'I didn't want to read and run' annoys the fuck out of me !

rylanpop · 05/11/2019 23:10

@Chocoholic1972 oh god yes!

I take back my previous post.

CherryPavlova · 05/11/2019 23:11

Dessert as an acceptable word.

TheDarkPassenger · 05/11/2019 23:12

‘Run... run for the hills’

Cringeeeeee

TheNestedIf · 05/11/2019 23:13

More of a spelling error, but "lose" spelled as "loose". I bet the culprits don't spell "lost" as "loost" or "lawst".

Brandnewshit · 05/11/2019 23:13

Nibbles.
As in wine and nibbles.

Brandnewshit · 05/11/2019 23:15

Oh and borrowed someone money,
The lender lends money and the borrower borrows.

PeopleWhoRun · 05/11/2019 23:15

@TheDarkPassenger laughing so much at that - I've only just realised how dramatic and ridiculous it sounds

thefairyfellersmasterstroke · 05/11/2019 23:16

Dessert as an acceptable word

Yes! "Dessert" is so laden with middle-class angst, and really just refers to fruit. Pudding is just fine.

"Give your head a wobble" is beyond annoying.

KimchiLaLa · 05/11/2019 23:16

Smellies
Naice

I fucking hate "naice". Fucks me off.

TheNestedIf · 05/11/2019 23:17

Oh, and "Are you OK OP?". Often genuine but also often used by nosy posters who have contributed nothing remotely helpful using some poor unfortunate OPs life as entertainment.

AiryFairyMum · 05/11/2019 23:19

I was taught “pudding” not “dessert” – pudding is pudding, dessert is the fruit course.

JasminaPashmina · 05/11/2019 23:19

"Little one" or "LO"

FUCK OFF... just write "kid", it's one letter longer than "LO" and many letters less than "little one".

TWAT.

Bluerussian · 05/11/2019 23:20

No, Noturinatin, 'dessert' is a French word for 'pudding'; 'dessert' should only be used in restaurants or in France. Over here, at home it's pudding, not a 'type of pudding', just pudding, whether it's an apple or jam sponge (pudding) and custard. Which makes me think I really fancy some right now.

I hate posts beginning with 'So'.

catinavan · 05/11/2019 23:21

Post where OP gives background to story, then says ‘fast forward to today’ as if their life is some fascinating blockbuster Angry

Pieceofpurplesky · 05/11/2019 23:22

Pudding is perfectly acceptable.

Holibobs, however, is not. Nor is hubster. I also hate babes as in 'hey babes'

Wildorchidz · 05/11/2019 23:23

Big girl pants.

Jiggles101 · 05/11/2019 23:23

Hubby is the absolute worst, bleuurgh 🤮

I also cannot stand the abbreviations, DD/DH etc and never use them, they're so unbearably twee.

tangled2 · 05/11/2019 23:23

Entitled
Hard work (as in 'you sound like')
Spoilt
Hard stare
'That doesn't work for me' as if that completely shuts down all possible counter arguments. No is not a complete sentence either

SubstantialDroop · 05/11/2019 23:23

I can't think of an alternative for snacks though. Am I being thick, what do you say instead lol.

LumpyPillow · 05/11/2019 23:25

Another for skin crawling over: 'treat', 'chocs' and to add to that theme: 'fizz'. Often seen together: 'I expected more than chocs and fizz on my birthday'
Also,
'yummy'...... and 'yummy treat' can send me over the edge Grin

Chocs is by far the one I cringe at most though, I've never heard anyone say chocs in real life.

PeopleWhoRun · 05/11/2019 23:26

"OP you sound lovely" Grin always makes me laugh
