Words that I see on MN that make my teeth itch....

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 05/11/2019 22:44

For some reason, since being on MN I have developed an irrational hatred towards certain words that are overused on here....namely, "tat" and "snacks" and I don't know why, because they are words I've used in the past! Now, ugh.

And also, even though I've used it in the title, I hate the phrase "makes my teeth itch" it's almost as bad as "boils my piss".

Does anyone else have words that MN have put them off using? Or am I just a grumpy old unreasonable bag?

OP posts:
BuzzShitbagBobbly · 07/11/2019 01:32

"Not all men are like that" - almost always used sneeringly

...along with comments about how they know they found the perfect man/their husband would never do xyz/they have no secrets at all/know 100% their amazing partner would never ever cheat etc.

As if the poor shell shocked woman who has just found out about some awful marriage ending secret planned to hook up with a shitbag!

FunOnTheBeach20 · 07/11/2019 02:33

Wtf is “twee” and why does it concern everyone on this thread so much?

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 07/11/2019 03:44

Ok I saw this elsewhere but it reminded me of MN:

Browse
(Also "mooch" and "wander")

When related to shopping. They all conjure up visions of aimless, pointless expanses of wasted time.

Drogosnextwife · 07/11/2019 07:53

"unless there is a massive drip feed coming....."

Hate that!

AmIScary · 07/11/2019 08:12

Oh yes. Mooch

Add "pootle" to that. Reminds me of aimless airheads getting in everyone's way

StillCoughingandLaughing · 07/11/2019 08:37

Wtf is “twee” and why does it concern everyone on this thread so much?

Why do so many people struggle with Google when it comes to this word?

midsomermurderess · 07/11/2019 11:45

Here the fuck is what twee is: 'affectedly or excessively dainty, delicate, cute'. Almost the very definition of irritating.

NoSauce · 07/11/2019 11:48

Twee first example is “my little family” amongst other things Wink

MrsFoxPlus4Again · 07/11/2019 11:53

When they think their kids common and normal as fuck names are outing. Also when they say my husband has a hobby it’s too outing but “think” cycling.

“Who’s pissed on your chips ?”
It’s quite amusing but feel it’s used by people trying to get a laugh now as it’s used so much

Bunnyfuller · 07/11/2019 12:40

AIBU to go to A and E?

This feels a bit like the FB A and E check in. We all know what A and E is for - you don’t need a bunch of unqualified randoms on MN to validate your decision. Agreed, there have been the odd one where the OP has been proper Big Sick, but the majority seem a bit attention-seeking.

MrsFoxPlus4Again · 07/11/2019 12:42

Baby name posts when it says “it I like Emma what other girls names will I like?” And the reply’s are things like Celmentine, Yolanda, Princess Consuela Banana Hammock but she might get called Valerie for short.

Then comes along the suggesting or longer names, oh really you should call her Emmalinanna she’d thank you when she’s older. Maybe use Em or a completely unrelated name as a nickname.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 07/11/2019 13:29

Oh god, baby name posts which include the official nickname ("nn")

As if you can control what nickname a child gets, when the point of them is that they are a naturally evolved term.

Little Persephone could end up with anything from Penny to Monster to Bum, even though mum desperately wanted "Persephone, nn Nina".

PanGalaticGargleBlaster · 07/11/2019 13:41

Posters who write out some smug passive aggressive scripted response that the OP should recite when dealing with an unpleasant individual. You just know they they think they are being terribly witty and that they believe said response will make the unreasonable person check their behaviour towards the OP and think about their future actions in life as opposed to the probable outcome of the OP being told to piss off and the problem escalating.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 07/11/2019 13:47

Yes to the baby names thing.

"What boy's name goes with Helen?"

ANY boy's name will 'go' for your son - that's the whole thing with names, they're allocated on an individual basis at birth, so they don't have to 'go' with anybody else's name.

You might as well be asking "Which pillow case goes with this compost bin? (our close friends have a potting shed, if that's relevant at all)."

LemonPrism · 07/11/2019 14:11

I don't know why but I hate 'hot drink'. Just so glottal. I call them tea, coffee, hot cordial etc. Not hot drink, but I see that it IS a reasonable catch all phrase.

I just hate it

theunknownknown · 07/11/2019 14:25

I can’t bear the ‘d’ thing.
Also, fottfsoftfosm - argh!!!
Also, penis beaker etc. I was around for that thread and it was hilarious but not sure what sort of provenance that gives to a new thread.
And sentences that start with and or also!

Westfacing · 07/11/2019 14:34

I like mooch!

Usual suspects that I never hear anywhere but MN: picky tea, chippy tea, hidden veggies, massive salad and the baffling DH's hobby, which can't be named!

ConFusion360 · 07/11/2019 16:10

"conflate"

I never hear it anywhere else but here. Once one poster uses it in a thread, it seems to go viral.

StealthPolarBear · 07/11/2019 19:02

My dh has a hobby but it's a bit outing so I'm not going to tell you all. But think picking dry skin off his feet while watching TV.

PanGalaticGargleBlaster · 07/11/2019 20:41

WTF is picky tea

rainbowunicorn · 07/11/2019 20:53

Naice - makes me think the poster is a bit pathetic really.
HTH - always looks very passive agressive

Bacardi101 · 07/11/2019 20:57

Ducks in a row drives me insane don’t know why I just hate the term

bridgetreilly · 07/11/2019 21:02

DTD. If you can't say the word sex, you shouldn't bloody well be doing it.

I also REALLY hate it when someone name changes and then tells us all the threads they remember so we know they aren't really new here. Who do they think cares?
