Words that I see on MN that make my teeth itch....

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 05/11/2019 22:44

For some reason, since being on MN I have developed an irrational hatred towards certain words that are overused on here....namely, "tat" and "snacks" and I don't know why, because they are words I've used in the past! Now, ugh.

And also, even though I've used it in the title, I hate the phrase "makes my teeth itch" it's almost as bad as "boils my piss".

Does anyone else have words that MN have put them off using? Or am I just a grumpy old unreasonable bag?

Is Northampton referred to as Noton?

If it is, then that's absolutely.... unacceptable Grin

StillCoughingandLaughing · 06/11/2019 21:54

I forgot ‘the menz’. Thankfully this one seems to be dying out now, but why did anyone ever think it was funny in the first place? Things like ‘naice ham’ and Biscuit were at least funny once before they got old. ‘The menz’ is just ridiculous.

EarringsandLipstick · 06/11/2019 21:59

@Dahlietta

It really is OF an evening. A quick Google will confirm. It's the same with the posters who insist it's "You've got another THING coming" because the (correct) 'think' "doesn't make sense". It does, but if you're not sure, you can just Google it.

You need to google some more 😀

'Of an evening' is treated by OED as an informal use of language. It's not 'correct'. (Neither is it 'incorrect', in that it's a local/regional variation, with the 'proper' terminology being 'in the evening' or 'on an evening'. Using brackets advisedly here)

WaterOffADucksCrack · 06/11/2019 21:59

"Wow, just wow". It makes you sound like a massive twat! As do all sarcastic "wow"s.

Picky bits/tea makes me feel sick.

"Trotted out" makes me think of some weird line up of pigs (don't ask, I can't explain it).

People saying "spends" instead of money.

The words give/given/gave seem to have disappeared on here. Now it's "I was gifted this" and "gift it to someone else".

"Think" used unnecessarily, "my sons name begins with a D, think Daniel". There's just no need!

I have many more words and phrases which annoy me but the final one is posters who think their lives are so unique they'll be outed so they won't give you any information to answer their query.

mrssillysausage · 06/11/2019 22:01

The word hubby makes me want to vomit

Dahlietta · 06/11/2019 22:07

I don’t need to Google more because I know it’s a perfectly valid expression. That advice was for the poster who said it wasn’t.

derxa · 06/11/2019 22:08

Wee ones/little ones/LO are all as equally as irritating as littlies. How about 'kiddies' as the Duchess of Cambridge would say? I must say I was making the proverbial cat's bum face at that one. Grin

cavycavy · 06/11/2019 22:11

OP: My husband didn’t do the dishes tonight (or whatever)

Poster: Does your husband often disrespect you?

The “does your husband often....?” Question annoys THE HELL out of me!!

EdWinchester · 06/11/2019 22:18

'Dessert' is frightfully non-U.

'Teeth itch', 'boils my piss' and any hun, babe, bubs, lil man revoltingness.

historysock · 06/11/2019 22:23

Chocs makes me wince.

nevergotthehangofthursdays · 06/11/2019 22:35

Has anyone mentioned cooking yet? I can't stand the way people will 'chuck in' a can of tomatoes, or 'bung' a pie in the oven, or 'throw together' some pastry, or 'bash up' some herbs. It's cooking a meal, not a circus act. How does all this food make it to the table without ending up permanently stuck to the wall, the floor, someone's hair or the dog's backside?

NeckPainChairSearch · 06/11/2019 22:43

I agree. It's usually on the threads where posters want to stress how much quicker it is to cook a dish by lobbing things at a pan from across the kitchen and 'shoving' stuff into ovens. As though merely 'pouring' and 'adding' takes SO much longer Grin.

Dongdingdong · 06/11/2019 22:51

Ok keep your wig on. It’s definitely a thing. People say it and right it. Whether it’s wrong or not. And it’s definitely used down south.

And your evidence for that is your one friend down south who uses the expression? Right Hmm

And I’m fully aware that people say it and write it thank you - hence saying I find it irritating.

meganxz · 06/11/2019 22:59

"squash" idk something about seeing "made some squash" ahhhhhh

AryaStarkWolf · 06/11/2019 22:59

@cavycavy yeah or "Is he Usually so controlling"

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 06/11/2019 23:02

Is Northampton referred to as Noton

In the two years thar I lived there i tended to refer to it is "no town" or, more frequently, that shithole.

Sorry to anyone who lives in Northampton btw. The countryside is lush and I have fond memories of the Park Cafe in Abington Park 😁

NAMALT

"Why are men so violent/selfish/useless in every way/should all be sent to live on an island etc?"
"Some of them are but the majority of them are decent people who might have their faults and failings now and again, like any of us - but you can't just generalise and make sweeping statements."
"Oh, ALRIGHT - I know, NAMALT. Look everybody - the MRA has arrived."

A bit like MILs - millions of people have nice normal, reasonable MILs with whom they get along perfectly well, have the occasional minor disagreement with - many people respect and actually come to love their MILs. But because none of them would ever think to start a thread saying "AIBU to think that my MIL is a nice normal person who does normal things quite normally?" (except for the odd one in direct response to the plethora of threads about horrific MILs), lots of people automatically assume that MIL = evil.

I know, I know - NAMILALT....

ChinaCat345 · 06/11/2019 23:53

Buzzing , Buzzin ( if unable to spell)
Woke ( slang version)
Netmums references. Why ? It’s the same type of thing, there is no class differential
Any abbreviation, Dear Husband, Dear Brother, anything where you can be confused as to the identity. Ie DBSIL,brothers sister in law, etc
Sick, slang meaning good .

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll

What’s NAMALT?!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 07/11/2019 00:31

"Not all men are like that" - almost always used sneeringly and dismissively with the unwritten suggestion that, technically, what they're saying might not apply to 0.000001% of men.

Doman · 07/11/2019 01:11

Cuppa
Fella
Hubby

All of the above make me feel like I'm reading The Sun circa 1985. They make me stabby.
