Words that I see on MN that make my teeth itch....

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 05/11/2019 22:44

For some reason, since being on MN I have developed an irrational hatred towards certain words that are overused on here....namely, "tat" and "snacks" and I don't know why, because they are words I've used in the past! Now, ugh.

And also, even though I've used it in the title, I hate the phrase "makes my teeth itch" it's almost as bad as "boils my piss".

Does anyone else have words that MN have put them off using? Or am I just a grumpy old unreasonable bag?

When I was growing up, dessert was what people used to say because they thought it sounder posher, but pudding is the posh word. See here :

Name change but long time poster. Then giving a list to previous MN post to prove you really are . Who cares.

Sparklingbrook · 06/11/2019 09:32

Is there anything we can say? Grin

The 'get' thing doesn't bother me at all. You are going to get something.

'Discuss' seems to have been replaced by 'Thoughts?'. Still annoying.

HitsAndMrs · 06/11/2019 09:33

'Teeth itch' 🙄

RaymondStopThat · 06/11/2019 09:33

I totally agree with the “can I GET a coffee” Arseholes!

Grin One of my step children says it and it drives me bonkers. Makes no sense at all. Same when ordering a meal, when he says can I get whatever its really hard not to say 'only if you go in the kitchen and fetch it yourself'.

TrickyD · 06/11/2019 09:37

'So' to start a post is breeding, I have seen 'So, OK' several times.

Gifted - where has that come from and why?

I hate 'pressies' and manky cardboard boxes which become 'hampers' when containing tat and hot choc.

On an evening. It's of an evening.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 06/11/2019 09:38

The posts that start "man here".

The ones that say "I can't mention my DH's hobby as it's too outing" as if only one person in the country/world plays golf or cycles.

I also dislike it when people pluralise names with an apostrophe, when they wouldn't in any other instance.

mintcorneto · 06/11/2019 09:39

'Name change bff or this as it could be outing'

mintcorneto · 06/11/2019 09:39

That should have read

'Name change for this as this could be outing my

I'm with havingtochangeusernameagain on swearing. Why do people actually take the time to type f u c k i n g several times in a post. There is absolutely no need for it. Now I can swear with the best of them when I'm angry or drop something on my foot, but I hate it when people can't either speak or write a sentance of normal conversation without punctuating it with that word. None of my family or friends speak like that. Well apart from one elderly cousin but he's been a regular cannabis smoker for years and it's definitely messed his head up.

Also writers or speakers starting a sentance with so ..

ConcernedAuntie · 06/11/2019 09:42

Sorry, sentence.

NoSauce · 06/11/2019 09:43

Yes to posh chocs and my little family. The CF thing annoys me no end and all the FUMMING and raging that goes on.

NormaBean · 06/11/2019 09:46

If I see:

  1. ‘We were in a shop (think Tesco’s)’
  2. ‘Can’t possibly disclose DH’s hobby as it’s too outing’
  3. ‘That would be correct, no? Hmm

Or any variation thereof, I close the thread.

WidowTwonky · 06/11/2019 09:50

I know it’s not in the spirit of the thread but many of these words and expressions are used in real life. They are not a mumsnet thing.
Many are of course, and for those YANBU

Cooroo · 06/11/2019 09:56

I think we should stop looking for things that irritate us and start looking at why we are so intolerant!

I do it too - 'big girl pants' makes me squirm. But most words depend on geography, class, fashion, typing quickly. I say supper, my partner says tea. We both say pudding. He says 'sat down' for 'sitting down' and after years in Yorkshire so do I.

It really doesn't matter. Take a deep breath and relax. Everyone is so angry these days!

QueenoftheDay · 06/11/2019 10:06

People who do a new post in a thread to correct a perfectly innocuous and obvious typo. Like, it’s fine! We know what you meant!

Also people who post a response to someone’s post without quoting the post itself.

“I agree with what Worra said” - well that’s fine but I’m not going back four pages to find out what Worra said.

ConcernedAuntie · 06/11/2019 10:08

Devastated. As in I was devastated not to be asked to a party. Devastated is when somene you love has died or you loose your job with no prior warning. Not being invited somewhere is upsetting or hurtful.

Micsam89 · 06/11/2019 10:09

Would of - although that's just incorrect grammar

Roaring - I've never heard this used in real life (but I'm in Australia, maybe it's an English thing?)

Absolutely fuming/furious or any other term like that

I do admit I'm one who uses the word hubby frequently

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 06/11/2019 10:10

See if that was me, I’d have blah blah blah.

This sentence but when the "blah blah blah" is some ridiculously unrealistic aggressive/righteous/rude/unlikely action.

E.g. "I'd have punched her in the face, spat on the baby and called her mum a fat cunt!"

When we all know we'd have said nothing, seethed inwardly and (at most) thought about posting on MN later.
