Words that I see on MN that make my teeth itch....

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 05/11/2019 22:44

For some reason, since being on MN I have developed an irrational hatred towards certain words that are overused on here....namely, "tat" and "snacks" and I don't know why, because they are words I've used in the past! Now, ugh.

And also, even though I've used it in the title, I hate the phrase "makes my teeth itch" it's almost as bad as "boils my piss".

Does anyone else have words that MN have put them off using? Or am I just a grumpy old unreasonable bag?

Hubby, fur baby and holibobs are all horrible but fur baby is by far the worst.
I instantly despise anyone who uses any of these and then get cross if it turns out I quite like them, or feel sorry for them, when I read their post.

Not knowing the difference between imply and infer.

Not wanting to drip-feed, in itself an annoying expression but then followed by a huge slab of text with no paragraph breaks and confusingly full of 'let's call her A' and 'I'll call him Sam'

Any baby words used by (presumably) adults

I've just seen a poster on another thread talk about a poorly tummy. In reference to someone's DH

Also overuse of strike through and emojis. There's a culprit on one particular topic who rolls up to every single thread with her words of wisdom. Her post full of them. It adds nothing

meyouandlulutoo · 06/11/2019 08:52

Fiontar649
"My husband was a bit naughty and went on the piss for 3 days without letting me know where he was, and he missed a very important family event"

I bet the poster was also accused of being 'controlling' if she dared even suggest she would mention her upset to him. I agree 'naughty' is not the word that springs to my mind in this context.

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 06/11/2019 08:54

there seems to have been an explosion of "hubby" lately

Hmm, the timing seems to have coincided with an influx from another site?

I didn't realise this thread would start a pudding/dessert bun fight. Reminds me of the time I asked a group of Devonshire and Cornish people whether it's jam or cream first WinkGrin

I can't bear those ones where people insist that you're an idiot if you use the word vagina when you actually mean 'vulva'. I have never heard the word vulva outside of a Biology lesson in real life.

MrGsFancyNewVagina · 06/11/2019 08:57

Reminds me of the time I asked a group of Devonshire and Cornish people whether it's jam or cream first

Oh OP, that’s hardcore! Shock I thought political discussions here in NI were rough until I saw a discussion on jam or cream first! Shock

I didn't realise this thread would start a pudding/dessert bun fight.
I'd say a bun is more of a picky snack bit than the pudding component of a tasty meal Grin

MrGsFancyNewVagina · 06/11/2019 08:59

OP I’m now picturing you wearing a balaclava sitting at a table and surrounded by clotted cream, jam and scones.

Boireannachlaidir · 06/11/2019 09:01

All of the above.

No one says 'fanjo' anymore I've noticed.

I dislike the over-sharers and those who defend them in the name of "support" when they're clearly not needing it.

YABVU for starting a thread about our annoyances and including one of the most irritating ones in the title.

1Morewineplease · 06/11/2019 09:01

I don’t like ‘FFS.’ It’s rude.

As with PPs, I don’t like ‘it makes my teeth itch.’ (Makes my teeth itch.)

PrincessHoneysuckle · 06/11/2019 09:03

@Soon2BeMumOfThree please do!

letitbezzz · 06/11/2019 09:09

fur baby is by far the worst.

@jenthelibrarian completely agree! I have someone in real life who uses this and it kills me every time!

Dahlietta · 06/11/2019 09:10

Oh yes, fur baby! And the posters who defend it with 'But they are my fur babies'. No, they aren't.

makingmammaries · 06/11/2019 09:14

‘We have an amazing newborn.’
Only you think your newborn is amazing, you pair of smug twats.

‘DD was laying on the sofa.’
No. She was LYING on the sofa.

MunsteadWood · 06/11/2019 09:14

"grabby"

Any post that ends with this face Confused

Newcatmum · 06/11/2019 09:15

Stinky 🤮
Diddums (often see this used as an attempted insult)
Chap or bloke instead of man

jenthelibrarian · 06/11/2019 09:16

I am glad to know that fur baby is so disliked! Smile

RaymondStopThat · 06/11/2019 09:19

The menopause is acceptable surely? I've heard it called that by Gynae consultants.

Mine are :
Starting a sentence with so
How grab is used all the time - grabbing lunch, grabbing my things
Not on MN, more in real life, when people are at a bar/counter, are asked what they would like and they say 'can I GET a coffee /tea/beer whatever' . No you bloody can't, the person serving you will get it, you will HAVE it.
Play date
Date night
Style and beauty section using the singular when it should be plural, so a red lip etc it sounds ridiculously affected.

itllneverfitinthecar · 06/11/2019 09:20

"Modelling" anything.

'Of course we gently model good mealtime behaviour'

No, you fucking don't. You sit down with your child and have some food.

ScreamingCosArgosHaveNoRavens · 06/11/2019 09:23

Pudding for dessert. Pudding is a TYPE of dessert

In the UK, 'pudding' is a perfectly valid word for what you call 'dessert'. 'Dessert' is what people say because they mistakenly think it sounds posher than 'pudding'.

PollyShelby · 06/11/2019 09:23

I hate chest fed and also when someone says Discuss at the end of their OP.

Grrrrr.

squishee · 06/11/2019 09:26

“We live rurally". I have only ever seen it on MN.

SoapOnARoap · 06/11/2019 09:27

@RaymondStopThat

I totally agree with the “can I GET a coffee” Arseholes!

ginghamstarfish · 06/11/2019 09:28

Picky bits - what you have left after a scab.
