FIL wants me to wear a certain jacket WWYD?

FIL is a somewhat quirky individual. While he has his strong points he can also be bossy and say offensive things.
He told me that he wanted our children to wear wool sweaters. I told him no, because you cannot even put them in the tumble drier. Then he wanted me to wear a certain type of jacket (the type ladies from his generation wear). He wanted to buy me one. I told him: no. He bought one in my size nevertheless and gave it to me as a present. WWYD?

A barbour jacket , they are expensive and definitely not just for old people . My daughter has one and loves it . Still a bit weird though .

Tistheseason17 · 06/11/2019 18:27

OP - not sure what your looking at but having just been on their website the models all under 30 and do NOT look old in their jackets - some great jackets of all designs their.

Personally, I'd pick a few that I would wear and let FIL know which ones you like.

Tistheseason17 · 06/11/2019 18:29

Hmmmm.. with this thread and the Barbour Slasher thread, perhaps a PP was on to something when they said it was a guerilla marketing campaign... it's a good one, I'm looking at them!!

sue51 · 06/11/2019 18:29

I bought my son in law a barbour jacket last christmas. My DD picked it out but it was my suggestion in the first place. I just thought it was something he'd like. Oh dear.

numberoneson · 06/11/2019 18:31

Pity he didn't give it to me, I like Barbour jackets!

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 06/11/2019 18:34

The Barbour jacket. Then these responses ...

Why cause unnecessary drama?

and ...

Pointless to argue. He has decided he’s the boss.

Heh heh heh. You all nearly had me there Wink

Coolwinter · 06/11/2019 18:34

I think you should buy him a white puffa jacket and a Nike woolly hat.

cherish123 · 06/11/2019 18:37

He sounds a bit weird. I would not wear it. If he asks, explain that you are not a young and not his offspring.

Vynalbob · 06/11/2019 18:38

(he is correct in the examples you mentioned) but has no authority so as a toy penguin my youngest had once used to say
"just smile and wave, smile and wave"

Kidlacky · 06/11/2019 18:45

offer to clean his car, then use it as the rag. Then turn up next time in bondage trousers and get your nose pierced n a pink mohecan. Sillu old fart isnt he. I know you cant say yes...... lol. Inlaws = Outlaws!

Kidlacky · 06/11/2019 18:47

Get him a barbie doll and some outfits. He will leave you alone then. You wont ever see him then. He,ll be too busy Barbying.

Frouby · 06/11/2019 18:48

Meh, if you ride OP I would accept the jacket, the use it for the stables. And then when you go visit make sure you wear it. He will soon change his mind when it stands up by itself, has suspicions stains on it and the obligatory baler twine and pony nuts in the pockets. Bonus points if it also has a pair of stinky riding gloves in there and a faint aroma of hayledge.

Kidlacky · 06/11/2019 18:49

All that about is trying to maintain kudos with certain individuals who may see you with him inappropriately dressed. Unless his surname is Windsor , it is he , that is inappropriate. In fact so are the Windsors.

Tinkobell · 06/11/2019 18:52

Hilarious. Definitely play him at his own game....buy a Rupert Bear style waist coat, bright pink chinos, trilby or Sherlock Holmes style hat....something v v eccentric and INSIST he wears it!

Tinkobell · 06/11/2019 18:54

A pair of trackies with "Juicy" emblazoned across the arse 🤢

FelicisNox · 06/11/2019 19:03

Either hand it back with a "that's very generous of you but it's really not my style" or put it on Ebay.

Is he interfering or is he just desperate to have some input in all your lives? Is he lonely?

I probably shouldn't but I feel a bit sorry for him. :-(

BlueJava · 06/11/2019 19:05

If it's a Barbour I'd say thanks and then sell it (unless I liked it which I assume you don't). Just make sure no one snips the edge!!

Nicolastuffedone · 06/11/2019 19:05

Love a Barbour jacket...I’ve got two quilted ones, love them!

Bilngismything · 06/11/2019 19:10

My god I’d love a Barbour

MarianneSolong · 06/11/2019 19:11

I like Barbour jackets and gilets. Am not a great fan of ketchup. I like wool jumpers - basically you don't need to keep washing them as they're a top layer. It's the T shirts you wear underneath that need to be washed. And gucamole is much nicer and cheaper if you buy an avocado and mash it up with a bit of garlic, creme fraiche, spring onion, lime juice, chili whatever.

Very happy to inherit the father-in-law if he needs to be recycled. I am without one.

starfishmummy · 06/11/2019 19:13

Im sort of with him on wool sweaters - much warmer than acrylic, and not made from plastic!!

Neves7 · 06/11/2019 19:18

Wool is not better for everyone. Even though I’m no officially allergic even very fine wools make me want to claw my skin off. Hated when I was made wear them as a child.

NoSquirrels · 06/11/2019 19:20

Can you not just say “Thank you FIL, what a generous present. It’s not really my style, though, as I told you last time you mentioned Barbour jackets. Would you prefer to return if for a refund or shall I pass it on to someone else?”

Awaywiththepiskies · 06/11/2019 19:23

He likes wool sweaters because he thinks they are more healthy for the skin than polyester and look better

Well, he's pretty much right about wool. For most people, it is better, except for those with allergies. For them a mix of cotton & silk is better.

Wool, cotton & silk are all far far far better for the environment. Polyester is basically plastic and landfill. Polyester is naff.

Awaywiththepiskies · 06/11/2019 19:46

never to give the children ketch-up/tomato sauce because it has to much sugar... or not to drink latte machiatto or buy ready made guacamole because it is a rip-off

Although his manner sounds overbearing and close to bullying, he's actually pretty correct in al, his strictures!

Shop-bought tomato sauce IS full of sugar (about 4g in a single tablespoonful) and ready made guacamole is a rip off - home made is much nicer: avocado, lemon, pepper & coriander, and there you are.
