FIL wants me to wear a certain jacket WWYD?

FIL is a somewhat quirky individual. While he has his strong points he can also be bossy and say offensive things.
He told me that he wanted our children to wear wool sweaters. I told him no, because you cannot even put them in the tumble drier. Then he wanted me to wear a certain type of jacket (the type ladies from his generation wear). He wanted to buy me one. I told him: no. He bought one in my size nevertheless and gave it to me as a present. WWYD?

Check it for rips

AryaStarkWolf · 05/11/2019 13:53

How weird, does he have some sort of clothes fetish or something?

Igobacktoblack · 05/11/2019 13:54

@AryaStarkWolf No - he's Prince Charles innit.

WhoKnewBeefStew · 05/11/2019 13:55

Stick it on eBay and buy something you like with the proceeds

Igobacktoblack · 05/11/2019 13:56

No don't stick it on ebay - send it to me!!!!!

Velveteenfruitbowl · 05/11/2019 14:00

Send it to me? I’ll happily send back a picture wearing it so he gets the satisfaction of knowing someone at least has done what he said.

As an aside I didn’t realise Barbour jackets were a generational thing. I don’t have one but not out of design per se. DH has one, so do a lot of younger people we know. I’ve even seen teenagers wearing them.

Teenangels · 05/11/2019 14:01

OP what colour is the jacket? I am hoping it is a size 10 if so I will take it off your hands, your father in law has great taste.

Winterdaysarehere · 05/11/2019 14:03

Bear in mind they easily rip op...

stucknoue · 05/11/2019 14:04

I'm with him on the wool jumpers, I always bought them for my kids, fine wool can go through the dryer too. The jacket thing sounds weird but do you turn up to his house without appropriate outdoor wear? I bought my mum hiking boots because she kept only having plimsoll type shoes (she now buys hiking boots herself !)

AryaStarkWolf · 05/11/2019 14:04

@Igobacktoblack oh right is this some sort of joke thread?

WombleishofTheThighs · 05/11/2019 14:04

Tbf, he's not wrong about wool v polyester. Polyester/acrylic is dreadful stuff and so bad for the environment. I am aware that not everyone likes the feel of wool, or are allergic to it, though.

ArthurMorgan · 05/11/2019 14:06

"nonetcurtains" Grin

ArthurMorgan · 05/11/2019 14:06

Highlight fail Blush

WombleishofTheThighs · 05/11/2019 14:07

It's a snob thing from the so called upper classes.

Is it bollocks, I'm very much NOT upper class, but I loathe man made fibres. Nasty, sweaty stuff.

ShirleyPhallus · 05/11/2019 14:07

Eugh wool jumpers are horrible. Even the finest knit ones are scratchy and uncomfortable

BlackCherryBliss · 05/11/2019 14:08

Accept it.

Sell it.

Buy something tacky/slutty/sparkly//ugly/whatever offends his sensibilities and wear it around him, letting him know how you got the cash for it.

Spudlet · 05/11/2019 14:08

If it’s a 12, I’ll have it Grin I love my wax jacket in winter, it’s warm and tough and has big pockets and hand-warmer pockets too. What’s not to love?

However if your day doesn’t often involve diving through spiky hedges to retrieve your dog and/or child, I can see the practical benefits might not be so necessary for you!

diddl · 05/11/2019 14:08

Must tell my daughter (early 20s) that she's the wrong generation for a BarbourHmm

ShirleyPhallus · 05/11/2019 14:11

To be fair, the classic wax jackets are pretty timeless but the padded ones with the waist belt do remind me of golf-club-mum-chic

They’re not, my merino wool knitwear is fabulous. Machine washable too.

Thehagonthehill · 05/11/2019 14:15

It depends on the jacket.I love Barbour waxed jackets and wore them when I was in my 20/30s.
If it's a quilted one the at 59 I'm still far too young to wear one.
As for him insisting on you wearing it just ignore.Tell him he'd wasting his money to buy you one and if he goes ahead try the'oh,you really shouldn't have 'and shove it in a cupboard(or donate to Mumsnet readers).

GeneHuntLover · 05/11/2019 14:18

Make sure it doesn't get a tiny rip in it

DuckonaBike · 05/11/2019 14:20

There's nothing wrong with Barbour jackets or wool jumpers, but plenty wrong with telling someone else what to wear! I'd give it to charity.

Flyingfish2019 · 05/11/2019 14:38

Really, this board has a Barbour jacket troll? lol No, it is really not me and I wouldn’t have mentioned the brand if you hadn’t asked.

No, he does not have a cloth fetish. He has a telling-other-people-what-to-do fetish. For example he also told me never to give the children ketch-up/tomato sauce because it has to much sugar... or not to drink latte machiatto or buy ready made guacamole because it is a rip-off.

But then dh likes him very much because he is his father and I don’t want to argue with him... but sometimes I cannot bite my tongue.

Tell him you prefer the Barbour Jacket with the Liberty print lining.
&
Your children can only tolerate cashmere, they can't wear ordinary wool.

He is correct natural fabric are armed and breathe.

Maybe he would prefer to buy you a goose down duvet if yo7 tell him you only have a synthetic one. Siberian goose down pillows are heavenly, lamb skin gloves, silk blouses.

Can we swop FIL's please, mine used to bu6 his cheap acrylic sweaters on the market.
