"Madison also said, though, that impeachment is the constitutional protection against a president who would abuse his power to pardon criminals"

Trump has more than once pardoned someone from the forces who had been found guilty and clearly was; does insisting that the branch of the services that has thrown someone out for his criminal behaviour must reinstate him (Navy Seals, that was) count as abusing power to pardon?
