It would be completely reasonable for Pelosi to wait until the subpoenas to witnesses have been resolved before sending the case to the Senate.

The courts will rule on whether the subpoenas must be obeyed, or whether Trump's orders to the witnesses not to testify must be obeyed.

Very little point in trying to proceed with a trial if half the witnesses are still dodging testifying.

Not according to GOP House LeaderKevin McCarthy: Pelosi is “embarrassed” to send the impeachment to the Senate. He said this with a straight face. Perhaps they’ve been turned into robots or some kind of MAGA-zombies? Are we living a Soviet-inspired Dr Who episode? I’m really struggling to find a reason to find why these people are doing the bidding of this odious man - who cares about no one else - to the ongoing detriment of their party and nation. They are giving up their own reputations as they will carry guilt by association. It’s bizarre.

The Hill @thehill 10 mins

Rep. Kevin McCarthy: "Now we have the Speaker of the House who is so embarrassed, she admits the failure of this impeachment, that she will not even send it to the Senate."

areyouawarem8 I adore people like you. You pop on to tell us we’re idiots and that Trump has done nothing wrong, despite all evidence to the contrary. You’re happy to live in an abrasive, unstable world? Do you like a POTUS that can’t be trusted to give a coherent press conference? Democrat or Republican, I would simply like someone I could trust to do the right thing at a moment of extremely high pressure. From what we’ve seen so far Trump is is not a person I trust. Unless it benefits him directly - you could trust him then.

RhinoskinhaveI · 20/12/2019 10:44

Doing the bidding of this odious man
I suppose because once they start doing his bidding they are compromised, they are part of his wrongdoing, when the most powerful man in the world has something on you you're in a bit of a tight spot.
they start to resemble a mafia organisation, a crime family, once they start operating along those lines any adherence to what is right good and moral goes out the window and it's all about who's loyal to mr big?

lionheart · 20/12/2019 11:51

Mostly self-interest because they believe re-election depends on their support for Trump. Aside from basic electoral calculations they know that Trump and his GOP minions will stamp on anyone who steps out of line.

Then there are those hidden pressures that can be exerted if someone in the public eye has anything they want to be kept hidden...

RhinoskinhaveI · 20/12/2019 11:55

They believe that they are elevated by their association with Trump when in fact they will all be indelibly stained

Lweji · 20/12/2019 13:18

There will be financial pressure from donors with ulterior interests.

That's how the NRA keeps guns unchecked despite widespread support for regulations.

lionheart · 20/12/2019 13:51

And some of them will stick to Trump's coat-tails to advance their own specific agenda (anti-immigration; NRA; pro-life etc).

This is not going down so well.

Lweji · 20/12/2019 14:50

CT will want Pence in office.

The thing is most don't think he'd stand a chance in 2020, so still bet on Trump, I think

Scrotus responds to the CT editorial via (big surprise) Twitter

^"A far left magazine, or very “progressive,” as some would call it, which has been doing poorly and hasn’t been involved with the Billy Graham family for many years, Christianity Today, knows nothing about reading a perfect transcript of a routine phone call and would rather....."
"....have a Radical Left nonbeliever, who wants to take your religion & your guns, than Donald Trump as your President. No President has done more for the Evangelical community, and it’s not even close. You’ll not get anything from those Dems on stage. I won’t be reading ET (sic) again!"^

Chritianity Today 'far left'? Seriously? If CT is 'far left' that pretty much makes us all radical bomb-throwing anarchists. 🙄

I've just finished watching a series about Watergate. Somewhat satisfactory. Interesting differences and parallels. No Fox News then.

It's the economy, stupid.

www.theguardian.com/us-news/2019/dec/20/nancy-pelosi-on-trump-and-the-power-of-the-gavel-hell-be-impeached-for-ever

'Nancy Pelosi promised as speaker she would “show the power of the gavel”. This year, she laid it out for all to see.

The past week alone, the Democratic leader delivered a $1.4tn government funding package to stop a shutdown, pushed through the bipartisan US-Mexico-Canada trade agreement, and passed her party’s plan to lower prescription drug costs. In between, she led a congressional delegation to Europe for the 75th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge.

And on Wednesday, she impeached the president.'

Great hashtag. Smile

Damn. This doesn't have the video clip but if you can, you should watch it on the twitter/social media--it has a bearing on what we touched on earlier about a 'reality tv' president.
