Jeremy Corbyn

I see so many posters saying they won’t vote for Labour as they don’t like Jeremy Corbyn - why? If the Labour policies are good then why not vote for those rather than the leader?

OP posts:
LakieLady · 30/10/2019 15:50

I have no idea why there hasn't been a move within Labour to remove him.

There's no point. Labour is a very democratic party, with one member, one vote, in leadership elections. Jeremy Corbyn still has massive support among the membership, so any bid to oust him would fail.

I think the claims of Labour being a Bolshevik or Stalinist organisation shows how much the political spectrum has moved to the right over the last 40 years or so. The current policies are no more left wing than the policies of the Wilson and Callaghan governments in the 60s and 70s. In most of western Europe, they would be regarded as a maintstream social democratic party.

And as for all the people decrying Corbyn for being an awful person, I'd love you to meet him. He is a quiet, polite, respectful and thoughtful man who cares very much about people and is, in his unassuming way, rather charming.

contentedsoul · 30/10/2019 15:57

I honestly couldn't give a flying fuck who gets in, be it Corbyn, Johnson..Putin or even the resident cat!

Does not give a shit!!

I along with almost everyone I know have now washed their hands with politics. The utter betrayal of the referendum vote has proven that we DO NOT live in a REAL democratic society...that's just hogwash a mere smokescreen.

It is a travesty on a biblical scale the way this government has handled the Brexit vote.

I couldn't give two fucks if this country goes to the wall or goes to war!! I hope we are overrun with migrants, that crime escalates, that the interest rates soar sky high...etc etc

In short this shit hole deserves everything that's coming to it....EVERYTHING!!

Milicentbystander72 · 30/10/2019 16:00

SweetSummerChild I agree wholeheartedly.

I'm a floating voter too. I've voted for all the parties so far in my life (yes I'm old!) including Plaid Cymru when I lived in Wales.

I tend to not argue online about Politics anymore. I mentioned on here once that I'd voted both story and Labour in my time and was shouted at and asked to explain myself in detail because Tories and Labour are so different.

I say I don't like JC or any of the front bench and I get told I'm a sheep and have duped by the right wing media. Riiiight.

The JC cultists have done nothing to persuade a floater like me. Someone mentioned liking Jess Phillips MP earlier on. Yes I agree. However Jess Philips is constantly bullied and abused by supporters of her own party for not hiring at the alter of Corbyn. If you read Twitter for any length of time it's just vile......

I think this time I'll be voting Tory or Lib Dem. I voted Remain but would like to see Brexit delivered. I'm resigned to it. I think the problem of simply revoking that the Libdems want will bring a host of problems.

However I'm in a very safe Labour seat so 🤷🏻‍♀️

Milicentbystander72 · 30/10/2019 16:01

Hiring = worshipping.

I’m voting Labour.
All you Lib Dem supporters will end up having your vote used to prop up the Tories and facilitating Brexit and the destruction of this country. Shame on you.

MrGsFancyNewVagina · 30/10/2019 16:04

He is a quiet, polite, respectful and thoughtful, misogynistic man who cares very much about people, but especially those that have a penis and is, in his unassuming way, rather sexist.

Mistlewoeandwhine · 30/10/2019 16:06

Labour’s Brexit position ( nb NOT Corbyn’s as it is decided at conference by the party) has NOT changed.

They’ll get the best deal then put it out to a second referendum. If the Lib Dems form a coalition government with the Tories, we’ll get a hard Brexit and the destruction of the welfare state.

Mistlewoeandwhine · 30/10/2019 16:07

Corbyn is a good man. Boris doesn’t even know how many kids he has.

Justanotherlurker · 30/10/2019 16:10

All you Lib Dem supporters will end up having your vote used to prop up the Tories and facilitating Brexit and the destruction of this country.

You will be voting for a life long eurosceptic, who funnily enough the same big business who say brexit will trash the economy also say the same about him and labour.

Gooseysgirl · 30/10/2019 16:11

I'm not a massive fan of Corbyn but Boris is completely bonkers. I will be voting labour and looking forward to Iain Duncan Smith finally being kicked out of Chingford and Woodford Green, can't happen fast enough!

fotheringhay · 30/10/2019 16:11

Grin Mistlewoeandwhine I'd never say Lib Dem supporters will end up having your vote used to prop up the Tories and facilitating Brexit and the destruction of this country. Shame on you

But I frequently think it loudly!

Mistlewoeandwhine · 30/10/2019 16:13

It doesn’t matter what Corbyn believes personally. He represents the party and the party have produced the best and most democratic response to the Tory created Brexit disaster.

maddy68 · 30/10/2019 16:13

I saw this on Facebook today and I thought it summed Corbyn up perfectly
I am not a huge fan of Jeremy Corbyn, I don't think he has been the opposition leader needed regarding Brexit, the fact that he is a Eurosceptic and goes against the many remain MP's that make up the Labour Party, has often had me decide against his position, but I don't want a Tory government for another 5 years of austerity, so I have looked into him more closely in readiness for the December GE. Especially as to vote tactically I will need to vote for Labour.

I have always had a lot of respect for him. He is a man that has always stood by what he believes is right, seems to be honest, in comparison to other MP's. When compared to Boris Johnson, who has only looked out for what is best for his career, having written an article both supporting remaining in the EU and Leaving, Jeremy Corbyn is the better option. But what else makes me respect him?

In the 1980's, Jeremy, was seen as wrong for standing up for those wrongfully accused of the IRA bombings, the Guildford 4 and the Birmingham 6, yet he was right and they were later found to be innocent of these crimes. Many still hold this against him, but they were innocent of the crimes.

He was criticised for wanting dialogue over the Northern Ireland border, but again his campaigning for removing the hard border and bringing about peace was also correct. Leading to the Good Friday Agreement. Again, this is still held against him because he wanted peace. He had over and over again said he condemns the bombings, but because he also states he condemns the violent actions on both side he is criticised. When I see a man that sticks to his principles when it comes to conflict.

He is a man that stands by his ideals of peace over war, over and over again, even when it has been held against him and prevented his career moving forward. He entered politics to make a positive change to the UK and not to have power, demonstrated by his track record of not bending to what he believes is wrong. He has won 2 prestigious awards for his consistent efforts over 30 years to bring about peace. The Sean McBride Peace Prize and the Gandhi International Peace Award.

He has always been active in campaigns that oppose nuclear weapons, was a member of the STOP the War Coalition and is in opposition of spending £100 billion on the renewal of Britains Trident Nuclear Missile System, something 64% of the general public agree with him on.

He has been the elected MP in his constituency since 1983, 36 years. This in itself is an outstanding achievement and means that those he represents continue to trust him to do what is right for their area.

He has the backing of Trade Unions, specifically the two largest in Britain, Unite the Union and Unison, representing 2.5 million people in this country, due to his stance on protecting the rights of workers. Something that the Tory party is not interested in.

Rather than wanting to support further decades of tax cuts for the super rich, as the Tories do, he wants to ensure that tax evasion is stopped, worth £34 billion to the UK economy, increasing tax to those that earn over £150,000 per year and higher still for those earning over £1 million a year. Something that is supported by 75% of the public, and means the poorest won't be hit the most, as the austerity measures of the Tories has done.

He is against using personal attacks to get his point of view across, which is something I really do admire when you see the antics of many of the political party leaders.

35 of the countries best economists have backed his sensible policies that will help the economy to grow. In fact recent study, by the Institute of Fiscal Studies, have shown that the country under a Jeremy Corbyn government would bring about a stronger economy, whereas the Tories austerity measures have been proven to have stopped growth, helped further by brexit uncertainty.

He has the lowest expenses of ALL the MP's, stating " I think we should claim what we need to run our offices and pay our staff, but be careful because it's obviously public money".

His policy on tuition fees is to reduce them, if not abolish if possible through a sensible plan to cover the cost. I benefitted from free university education and believe that this is a right all students in the UK should have.

So, he is probably not the Prime Minister I would ideally want, but from the options we have he is probably the best option. In this, the most important GE Britain will have, we need a party that is truly for the people. My preferred Party doesn't have a chance, but Labour are the next big thing.

Plus, if you want it to be about Brexit:

Jeremy Corbyn is a Eurosceptic and wants out of the EU, but not without a deal which will kill our country. He is the only party offering the chance to get a EU deal and offer the Public the chance to vote on what it offers. Using democracy to make the final decision. I obviously hope that this will lead to remaining, but that is not guaranteed if Labour get in, but at least the country will have the chance to make a decision based on real, true facts and not just based on the lies of the Leave Campaign.

The Tories keep failing to get anywhere on Brexit because what they want is not in line with the countries needs. A new deal negotiated by labour may give supporters of Brexit the best option. If not, at least the chance for the country to vote on the facts.

That said, a GE shouldn't be about the one issue of Brexit, it should be about the effect the chosen government will have on our lives for the next 5 years, and what will make your life better, after 9 years of Tory austerity measures we know first hand they are not the ones that will do this, unless you are super rich.

VOTE wisely. It does count.

OrangeTwirl · 30/10/2019 16:13

He is a quiet, polite, respectful and thoughtful, misogynisticman who cares very much about people, but especially those that have a penisand is, in his unassuming way, rathersexist

And has no problem sacking his ministers who don't agree with him, and replacing them with desperate "Yes, Mr Cobyn, whatever you say Mr Corbyn (However ludicrous thst may be)" minions.

There will be a Tory/Brexit Party coalition, in December. Thanks to Jeremy Corbyn. It's time his party grew some balls and threw him out!

Mistlewoeandwhine · 30/10/2019 16:15

Fotheringhay, it’s time to fight. I’m so scared about what more austerity will do to this country. My friend is a psychiatric nurse and she says that austerity has people out in public who really shouldn’t be. I’m a teacher and know what austerity has done to schools. I live in Manchester and it is rapidly going downhill.

fotheringhay · 30/10/2019 16:17

We can't throw him out!!

How many times.

All we can do is wait till he doesn't want to do it anymore. And he's clearly far far preferable to that dreadful BJ

fotheringhay · 30/10/2019 16:18

I am fighting Mistelwoe I'll be out on the doorstep again defending a far from perfect leader because it's the right thing to do. Actually though I do meet a lot of voters who like him, but I'm in a really leftie area

SweetSummerchild · 30/10/2019 16:19

the same big business who say brexit will trash the economy also say the same about him and labour.

There are many remainers who, like me, voted Remain because they were ‘just about’ alright and didn’t like the idea of the uncertainty of the economy being trashed by Brexit. Many would rather now vote Tory for exactly the same reason, given that we now know what the Brexit position is.

For staunch Leavers, OTOH, the Labour position on Brexit looks decidedly unattractive. They are offering a choice between Remain or Brexit in Name Only. Many who are traditional Labour supporters will just simply not bother voting. Many traditional Labour supporters who also support Leave will secretly (or even openly) admit to liking both Boris and JRM.

This is reality, regardless of how lovely and caring JC is or is not or how many illegitimate children Boris has. Labour has to appeal to the swing voters and is doing a sh*t job of it.

Usernumbers1234 · 30/10/2019 16:19

@StinkGhoul

Erm you can go private for everything

fotheringhay · 30/10/2019 16:20

(sorry I spelled your name wrong there)

recrudescence · 30/10/2019 16:22

@Inebriati

He abstained from voting against Clause 28

Do you mean he abstained during the original legislation in (I think) 1988? Or at the time it was repealed in 2003?

MrGsFancyNewVagina · 30/10/2019 16:22

Exactly OrangeTwirl. It’s easy to appear like a good man if you’re able to bully and effectively threaten those that don’t agree with you. We see it all the time in the relationship boards.

longwayoff · 30/10/2019 16:24

Only Tories and Leavers work hard, the rest of us are lazy pinko scroungers living sybaritic lives on the huge mound of benefits dosh that hard workers have grudgingly been forced to part with via taxation. I hope you all realise that another 5 years of Boris will be very hard to bear. And Brexit too. What fun.

StinkGhoul · 30/10/2019 16:29

Erm you can go private for everything

No, you can’t. There are no private A&Es. If your baby needs NICU care you need to go to an NHS hospital.

I tried to go private when my son had an urgent vision issue and was told in no uncertain terms by the consultant (who works both privately and in the nhs) that I should absolutely stay under NHS care as they couldn’t provide anything like the service the NHS can privately.

Why anyone thinks that privatising a sector will lead to better care is beyond me - hasn’t worked out so well in other sectors has it? It’s not like the US doesn’t have huge numbers of medical malpractice and class action medical lawsuits.
