Would this put you off a date ?

Crystal1981 · 27/10/2019 20:21

So imagine you had been on a few dates with a guy, he seemed very nice and all.
One date you went to a retro gaming bar. To play the retro games, you need to purchase tokens from the bar. Tokens are £15 for 10.
Before leaving the bar, your date decides he would like to save a bit of money and slips the tokens into his pocket. (you are supposed to hand them in at the bar again before leaving).
This is so he can play for free next time.

It's theft, right ? Would you think less of this person/not see him again ?

Bizarre

Wouldn’t bother me at all

Tortoiser · 28/10/2019 23:50

I’d be more concerned by the fact you didn’t use all the tokens...you only had 10. Unless of course you were getting on ‘extremely well’ so weren’t bothered about the games 😍😜

BeanTownNancy · 29/10/2019 00:03

@Riv @FiddlesticksAkimbo

That's the point. You've paid for the games, not the tokens. You've paid for the drinks, not the glass. The tokens are not to be removed from the venue (there are signs up saying so) and remain the property of the arcade, so if you remove them it's theft. At least to my understanding. 🤷🏻‍♀️

shrutefarm · 29/10/2019 02:55

Wouldn't sit well with me. The business has to make money somehow. And the rules are clear. I don't understand that kind of stinginess.

steff13 · 29/10/2019 04:20

So, do you get a refund on the ones you don't use?

Aroundnabout1 · 29/10/2019 04:26

Why doesn't the OP want to clarify?

Blondebakingmumma · 29/10/2019 05:01

It’s not theft if he has paid for them

Do the machines swallow the token once it has been inserted?

If the game returns the token, why do you need 10 and not just one to reuse?

If I paid for game token at a venue and didn’t have time to use them all I certainly would take them and bring them back for next time.

shearwater · 29/10/2019 05:04

I don't really get the crap system where you buy tokens but then have to hand them back, thereby losing money.

Sounds rather convenient for the place. If I found that out I'd keep them for next time as well.

The bar is being dishonest and trying to steal money from customers, not your date.

shearwater · 29/10/2019 05:12

And why would it be bad for the bar if people kept the plastic tokens? They have to come back to use them, and buy more drinks, and they might bring their friends.

It's not as if you can use the tokens as legal currency Grin or they have any separate intrinsic value anywhere else. The correlation with stealing a glass is not only false, but rather stupid.

Mummyoflittledragon · 29/10/2019 05:32

This makes no sense. Either they are reusable by the customer during the evening, in which case, there is no need to provide 10 or they are swallowed by the machine, collected and reused by the business. I’m presuming the latter.

Comparing this to an arcade for example, you can buy tickets and use some then return another day with the remaining tickets. I really don’t understand what he’s done wrong.

If there are often tokens left, it actually sounds to me as though the business model is wrong. £8 for 5, £15 for 10 would be better. Otherwise the business is the cheeky fucker, not the other way round.

Take this in another context. Money, ie physical cash (at least used to be) a representation of the gold reserve of a country. Money is therefore actually an elaborate token. We don’t return the unused portion of money to a country when we leave it. We keep the money until the next time. Or because we want to keep it as a souvenir. Printing / minting new money has to be factored in to part of the banking system of the country in the same way that the place you went to needs to factor in that unused tokens won’t be returned but used on another day.

Marnie76 · 29/10/2019 05:32

Why has the OP buggered off without explaining. So annoying.

TheSecretJeven · 29/10/2019 05:35

Did he take the tokens that you had paid for, hence the "playing for free"?

That would put me off but then why not say something if it bothered you?

KatherineJaneway · 29/10/2019 05:36

Yes it would. If there are clear instructions to return the tokens and he kept them, then he is tight. It's clear the £15 is a charge you pay each time you go to play the machines.

MyOtherProfile · 29/10/2019 05:42

So if he paid for 10 tokens, used 5 and had 5 unused, could he have got a refund for the unused tokens? If not then I would say it's the games place that are robbing people.

ChrisPrattsFace · 29/10/2019 05:48

I want to go...
( also might be able to figure out how it’s all set up?...) 😂

OMGshefoundmeout · 29/10/2019 05:50

It might be stingy but it isn’t theft. He’ll return to the bar another time and buy drinks while he uses the tokens. What real difference does it make to the bar if he plays 10 games in a long session or the same number of games in two shorter sessions?

SchadenfiendeUnmortified · 29/10/2019 05:51

But he isn't playing for free as he paid for them?

Agree with this. He bought them, didn't use them, and decided to keep them for another occasion.

Why should he return them (no matter what the notices say) unless the venue gives him the cash equivalent back?

I wouldn't regard this as theft.

plinkyblonk · 29/10/2019 06:00

I think the majority people would take them home. I think you are thinking way to much about it and tbh why would you return the tokens you'd paid for and not get your money back?

I don't think it's tight or dishonest I think it's sensible. More fools those who had their tokens back and don't get their money back in return.

I'm sure the bar doesn't mind it's probably so they don't run out of tokens.

Icanflyhigh · 29/10/2019 06:13

YABU
He has bought and paid for them.
It's not theft if he's purchased them.
Unless I'm completely missing the point....

minesagin37 · 29/10/2019 06:18

He's not dishonest but the company are disorganised.

StreetwiseHercules · 29/10/2019 06:23

An insane read.

ChilledBee · 29/10/2019 06:57

He deserves better.

Candymay · 29/10/2019 07:06

I have no idea what’s going on here but it doesn’t sound like theft. I’d keep the unused tokens for next time too. In fact I’ve got some somewhere for segaworld but it shut down about 20 years ago. I must throw them out.

Blondebakingmumma · 29/10/2019 07:08

Maybe he can use them on his next date of OP gives him the flick

Durgasarrow · 29/10/2019 07:09

I don't understand this.
