Would this put you off a date ?

So imagine you had been on a few dates with a guy, he seemed very nice and all.
One date you went to a retro gaming bar. To play the retro games, you need to purchase tokens from the bar. Tokens are £15 for 10.
Before leaving the bar, your date decides he would like to save a bit of money and slips the tokens into his pocket. (you are supposed to hand them in at the bar again before leaving).
This is so he can play for free next time.

It's theft, right ? Would you think less of this person/not see him again ?

Who paid for the tokens?

KenAdams · 29/10/2019 08:17

The way I read it's a use them on the visit they were purchased or lose them. So the business can resell the tokens you've paid for once you hand back any unused ones and it's easy money for them.

The reason you have to hand them back is so the business doesn't have to keep big g the plastic tokens.

I'd keep them for next time too - the business would have made its money when I purchased them in the first place.

MyOtherProfile · 29/10/2019 08:19

Durgasarrow I think the summary really is that OP went on a date, doesn't really like the bloke and is looking for a reason to call it a day.

Nicolastuffedone · 29/10/2019 08:25

You don’t buy them, you pay to borrow them??? I can’t work that out?? Isn’t that the same as buying them........? I’m confused

SuperMeerkat · 29/10/2019 08:27

I don’t see the problem if he’s paid for them. If you don’t like him OP then just don’t see him again so it won’t be an issue will it?

FourEyesGood · 29/10/2019 08:28

I’d keep them too! The business is being cheeky by asking for unused tokens to be returned (unless they’re offering money back on them).

FlossieTeacakesFurCoat18 · 29/10/2019 08:44

The only reason the bar asks for them back is so they won't run out of tokens!

You're being silly OP. Both with the initial "he'll be playing for free!" and with your refusal to clarify on what's obvious to most of us

AmIThough · 29/10/2019 08:45

If he's paid for 10 games and not used them all then of course it's not theft.

GoldLeafTree · 29/10/2019 08:57

@crystal1981

Do the machines swallow the tokens when you insert them? For example, he used 5 tokens to play a game and had 5 unused?

If so he's not taken them to play for free next time because he's paid for them, so he'll use them again and get what he paid for.

SuchAToDo · 29/10/2019 09:31

It's not theft, he paid for them....why wouldn't he want to use the gaming tokens he paid for, and if you were both leaving (meaning he couldn't get use of them at that time) why would he hand back unused tokens that he hadn't paid for...

It's only theft if you take something that isn't yours/that you haven't paid for....

He paid for them, they are his to use on games

StillCoughingandLaughing · 29/10/2019 11:34

You don't buy them, you pay to borrow them and then it's written on the wall that they need to be returned. Otherwise, they would never make any money.

But what does this mean? What are the tokens actually for? Presumably you are given tokens rather than paying an entry fee to play everything so that you can redeem them against individual games? If this is the case, surely you either put them in the machine or hand them to an attendant. Otherwise, if it’s just ‘on honour’, there’s no need to have tokens.

The only thing that makes sense is if this is a ‘Use then or lose them’ system - i.e. any you haven’t used by the end of the night ‘expire’. If the business doesn’t have a way of policing that (e.g. date-stamped tickets instead of plastic tokens), of course people will keep tokens to use them at a later date. If the business doesn’t have the sense to recognise this and build the cost of a few bits of plastic into their budget, that’s their foolishness. It’s also a very quick way to alienate potential repeat customers.

To be honest, I wouldn’t want to go out with someone who got all pearl clutchy because I’d ‘broken the rules’.
