Would this put you off a date ?

So imagine you had been on a few dates with a guy, he seemed very nice and all.
One date you went to a retro gaming bar. To play the retro games, you need to purchase tokens from the bar. Tokens are £15 for 10.
Before leaving the bar, your date decides he would like to save a bit of money and slips the tokens into his pocket. (you are supposed to hand them in at the bar again before leaving).
This is so he can play for free next time.

It's theft, right ? Would you think less of this person/not see him again ?

It’s not theft because he’s not intending to permanently deprive the owner of them, but use them next time. It wouldn’t bother me. I would be more bothered about having a first date at a retro gaming bar.

holidays987 · 27/10/2019 21:22

I wouldn't really think anything of it. They'll get them back when he next goes in?

Avenilson · 27/10/2019 21:25

he paid for them, what is dishonest? He is going to use them and thus they will be returned, else he will lose some of his fee.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 27/10/2019 21:52

You’re saying this business is set up to charge people £15 for 10 tokens, the machine doesn’t swallow them so people have to collect them and give them back to the bar themselves? How do the bar know people only use the tokens once and don’t just use them over and over again?

The places near me sell 10 tokens for £15. You get the tokens from the bar, as you buy drinks. You put the tokens in the machines to play games - it doesn't return the ones that you've spent. Most games are one token, some are two.

So you wouldn't have a token to use twice, the machine would have swallowed it.

MardiBras · 28/10/2019 21:01

I don’t understand. Hadn’t he paid for them?
Why shouldn’t he hang on to them for another time?

MardiBras · 28/10/2019 21:03

Ignore my message - my page hadn’t refreshed after the first post by the OP Blush

Zebraaa · 28/10/2019 21:08

Please come back and explain properly. It’s not theft if he’s paid and not used them.

Groovinpeanut · 28/10/2019 21:19

If he's paid £15 for 10 tokens, then he's paid for them fair and square. If he chooses to limit himself and just use 5 of the tokens on this visit, and maybe save 5 for a future visit, he's done nothing wrong. He's paid for them. It's not like he can use them anywhere other than the retro gaming place, so they will get them back. Poor guy he's dammed if he does, and dammed if he doesn't. No doubt if he'd have gambled them all away he'd have run the risk of being labelled as having a gambling problem. I think someone taking a few tokens home for a future visit is very minor. I certainly wouldn't end a relationship over it.

Michaelbaubles · 28/10/2019 21:33

If the machines didn’t swallow them then what would be the point of getting 10 tokens? You’d only need one anyway (or two for a two player game I guess). So he has paid for them! He’s not “playing for free” next time, he’s getting the rest of what he paid for. Like getting a takeout box for the rest of your pizza. If he keeps them at home I suppose it’s technically stealing but they’re essentially worthless at home (and will cost the bar very very little to buy). It wouldn’t bother me.

Notthetoothfairy · 28/10/2019 21:41

Pretty sure the games in these places swallow the tokens, so he was just not being wasteful and taking his leftovers home. It’s a bit like refusing to see someone again because they drop £5 on the street and insist on stopping to pick it up.

Candace19 · 28/10/2019 21:44

Yeah wouldn't bother me

ThisIsSamhain · 28/10/2019 21:49

If the machine swallow them then of course I wouldn't hand back my unused ones, I paid for them! They would get them back next time I play and I put them in a machine.

Why on earth would I hand back unused tokens that I had paid for?

Myusername101 · 28/10/2019 21:54

But he paid for them. If the machine gave you them back then why would you need 10 to start with? The machine must keep them there for it isn't stealing imo.

BeanTownNancy · 28/10/2019 21:54

The tokens are the property of the company and they ask their customers not to take them. It's basically like buying a pint in the pub and not finishing it so taking the glass home saying "I'll bring it back next time".

Babynamechangerr · 28/10/2019 21:58

The date at a retro gaming bar would be more of a deal breaker personally.

But yes, I wouldn't be impressed by stealing the tokens or by the idea that he goes to the retro gaming bar often enough to bother to store up tokens for next time in quite a precalculated way. I wouldn't be able to shake the sense that I was dating an adolescent rather than a grown man, so would be complete turn off.

Liverbird77 · 28/10/2019 22:14

If the tokens were leftover, and he had paid for them, then I don't think he was wrong to keep them.
If he had already used them and was pocketing them to reuse, then it is theft. It is dishonest and would put me off.

Scarydinosaurs · 28/10/2019 22:59

I need a better explanation 😫

Fiveletters · 28/10/2019 23:05

Missing the point - what sort of games is it?

I don’t think this would bother me enough not to see someone again if I liked them but if I had already noticed other annoying things, it would probably add to the list!

CTRL · 28/10/2019 23:09

Honestly, my first thought would be “GOOD THINKING ! WE CAN USE THEM FOR NEXT TIME” Grin

AthollPlace · 28/10/2019 23:12

Being thrifty would not put me off a date. He’s paid for them so he’s entitled to use them. The bar WBU to expect people to hand back tokens they’ve paid for without offering a refund!

Wheat2Harvest · 28/10/2019 23:17

I think you're saying that he had tokens left over that he had paid for and was saving them for next time. What's wrong with that? I would find that admirable because it implies he's careful with money.

If you mean that he reached over the bar and grabbed a handful, that would be off-putting as it's theft.

Doggodogington · 28/10/2019 23:25

I can’t see that he’s done anything wrong. He didn’t want to use them all today so he kept some for next time.

FiddlesticksAkimbo · 28/10/2019 23:39

It's basically like buying a pint in the pub and not finishing it so taking the glass home saying "I'll bring it back next time".

I don't think so - that sounds like theft to me.

Riv · 28/10/2019 23:40

@ BeanTownNancy
In your scenario you are entitled to the drink and even to take it home as you have paid for it. You would only have to leave your glass. So you could, if you wanted to, pour the remainder of your drink into your refillable water bottle.
Surely you have taken the remaining half bottle of decent wine home after a meal once in a while??? Or taken some remaining food when the portion is too much for you that evening?
The token scenario seems to be similar- you pay for 10 tokens and those you don’t use you save for next time.

Riv · 28/10/2019 23:45

Maybe I have misunderstood. Are you are actually paying the money to enjoy the games, like a sort of entry fee? And you get the tokens to borrow so you can use the games- a bit like borrowing a golf club and a ball to play crazy golf?
In which case yes, it’s theft and off putting.
