To think Apple should replace my old phone for free

It's about 3 or 4 years old. Worked beautifully. Ok, that battery wasn't 100% but considering how much I use it, by the time it needs dealing with I would be looking at something else anyway. Which is at least 3 years away.
The screen has a slight crack, but not an issue for me as you don't really notice it and everything worked.

Everything was great until last week and I updated the phone. I am technically competent and have done everything they would have in store. Their policy when sending off is they will fix the screen at my cost. I don't want the screen fixed. Had this update not completely fucked my phone I wouldn't be going to the store. And if I was bothered I would do it myself, which I cannot do because I'm not authorised.

Am I being unreasonable for them to sort out the phone without cost to me?

I haven't been in yet, just trying to gauge an idea if I will have a bit of a 'battle' on my hands.

And no I don't want to switch to android. I have one and hate it lol.

It might be an obvious answer to you, but not me hence I am asking.

I very much doubt they'd do anything. The fact that the screen is cracked means that there could be internal damage. Which model phone is it? I had an iPhone 6 which I wasn't able to successfully update because it didn't have enough storage to do it.

amy85 · 27/10/2019 16:45

Your phone is probably too old for the upgrade....doubt they will do anything

Alloftheboys · 27/10/2019 16:47

Honestly, I think they’ll probably laugh you out the store.

PollyShelby · 27/10/2019 16:50

The new update has fucked my battery life. It just drops like a stone.

Queenlatifahsleftboob · 27/10/2019 16:52

Don't be stupid - it's way out of warranty and you cannot price it was a software update that broke it.

Buy a new one.

Queenlatifahsleftboob · 27/10/2019 16:52

*prove

HermioneWeasIey · 27/10/2019 16:53

There's a theory that Apple make phones stop working after a few years, to force people to get newer versions. They definitely won't help you. Do you not have insurance?

ffswhatnext · 27/10/2019 16:53

That was one of the issues after the update. Told me I had no storage. I deleted everything and just had the basic apps. Still full.
I had text messages going back to the beginning of last year and still full after deleted them, even though they shouldn't have been there.
Not that there was any point having anything on it as nothing really opened. When it did I could use for a few seconds, it would freeze and turn off.
I couldn't do a factory reset because the phone wouldn't allow it, it did let the other options work.
It was during a turn itself off that the phone completely fucked up and now I am in eternal apple screen.
It's a 6S. And for the moments I saw what the update gave me I loved it. Think that's whats pissed me off, it gave the old boy a new lease of life.

Nope. You don't stand a chance.

Older phones tend to be bricked by updates, you have to do your research before applying it. Added to a screen crack, you've got no way of proving that it hasn't contributed to the phones condition (water through the crack, internal damage, etc) and you'll have to pay for anything you want done in an attempt to fix this.

Purpleartichoke · 27/10/2019 16:55

I have a 5 year old Perfectly working And quite expensive peripheral that got made obsolete by a windows software update. No electronics company Supports what they view as outdated equipment.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 27/10/2019 16:55

If it's a 2014 iPhone 6S, it's no longer supported by Apple.

ffswhatnext · 27/10/2019 16:56

Oh, I don't mean a brand new phone, one of their reburbed ones if the phone cannot be repaired without cost to me.

OP posts:
Lhastingsmua · 27/10/2019 16:57

The thing is, if your screen is already cracked how exactly do you expect them to remove the cracked screen/display and replace it with the same one afterwards? The cracked screen will only get worse when it’s lifted, it probably won’t even be in a suitable condition to be reattached onto the phone? So you’re essentially asking them for a free screen replacement when you damaged the phone yourself.

Also you have very limited rights with a 4 year old device. After 6 months of ownership, the onus is on you to prove that the device is inherently faulty. As you managed to use it for 4 years without the issue, you would really struggle to blame Apple for this. They’re offering you a repair as a goodwill gesture, but are asking you to contribute to the cost of a screen replacement as they can’t repair your device without changing the display.

Also, what exactly is going on with your phone? Could a iTunes factory reinstall work?

Lhastingsmua · 27/10/2019 16:59

Sorry but I have a 4 year old 6s at home (and an ever older 5s) that still work - Apple does not literally stop older devices from working. 🙄

The fact that your phone is showing signs of life is good - you can probably recover it yourself via iTunes

HeresMe · 27/10/2019 17:01

You don't want android but keep with a company who purposely screws your phone battery life with updates.

They aren't gonna give you a new phone so vote with your feet.

But you won't as you have bought into the apple ecosystem which is so overrated.

ffswhatnext · 27/10/2019 17:02

Surely that shows something went wrong at their end. When the same happened to the 3 I couldn't install the update and get the cannot support message. Same with one the dc's 4's.
Checking the phone includes making sure the model can be updated, and what can be applied. It's built into the update. And if the phone isn't sorted anymore the update should not have gone through.

MyOtherProfile · 27/10/2019 17:03

I think they would say you've had your money's worth out of it if it is 3or 4 years old.

And no I don't want to switch to android. I have one and hate it lol.
Shame.

ffswhatnext · 27/10/2019 17:05

I don't like androids. I have one and hate it. My dc's are always complaining about them.

Yes, have tried i-tunes. Hard reset. Holding the + button.

OP posts:
MyOtherProfile · 27/10/2019 17:06

Funny but the only people I ever hear complain about Android are apple users. Android users seem to love them!

saltinesandcoffeecups · 27/10/2019 17:08

I’m assuming you backed up the phone prior to applying the update. You just need to restore it to the previous version (and then ignore any new updates)

If you didn’t back up the phone before applying the update, lesson learned for next time.

penisbeakers · 27/10/2019 17:08

I just replaced my 6s with a P30 Pro because I didn't want to buy a new model iPhone for the ridiculous money they were asking. Sounds like you're going to have to buy a new iPhone.

nononever · 27/10/2019 17:09

Honestly, I think they’ll probably laugh you out the store.

Absolutely. Technology software these days is rapidly progressing and older devices can't keep up. You've done well to get 3/4 years out of it, you've had your money's worth.

BlaueLagune · 27/10/2019 17:09

I have a perfectly good Windows 7 machine that will be rendered unusable in late January because Microsoft are going to stop supporting it. It's wrong that tech companies get away with this.

And for those saying it's out of warranty, read up on the Consumer Rights Act. Warranties/guarantees are IN ADDITION to your legal rights, not instead of them and retailers cannot force you go to the manufacturer, although they'll have a very good try. However, after 4 years you're going to be hard pushed to get any joy, I agree with the pp above.

Not sure why you hate Android phones. Much cheaper than Apple and no worse to use. Why spend £500 on a phone when a £200 Samsung will do the job well?

Winteriscomingfast · 27/10/2019 17:09

Funny but the only people I ever hear complain about Android are apple users. Android users seem to love them!

I have both- android for work but with full personal use- hate it.

vbhafjlb · 27/10/2019 17:10

Two 6s iPhones in this house still working as normal after the update. Sounds like your iPhone problem might be caused by something else, OP.
