To think Apple should replace my old phone for free

ffswhatnext · 27/10/2019 16:40

It's about 3 or 4 years old. Worked beautifully. Ok, that battery wasn't 100% but considering how much I use it, by the time it needs dealing with I would be looking at something else anyway. Which is at least 3 years away.
The screen has a slight crack, but not an issue for me as you don't really notice it and everything worked.

Everything was great until last week and I updated the phone. I am technically competent and have done everything they would have in store. Their policy when sending off is they will fix the screen at my cost. I don't want the screen fixed. Had this update not completely fucked my phone I wouldn't be going to the store. And if I was bothered I would do it myself, which I cannot do because I'm not authorised.

Am I being unreasonable for them to sort out the phone without cost to me?

I haven't been in yet, just trying to gauge an idea if I will have a bit of a 'battle' on my hands.

And no I don't want to switch to android. I have one and hate it lol.

It might be an obvious answer to you, but not me hence I am asking.

I'm posting this on an iPhone 5. Had it five years I think and it still works fine - I've just not updated the OS for a while because I know that would make it fall over irreparably. Likewise my 2010 MacBook Pro is still going strong. I detest spending money on tech.

Avenilson · 27/10/2019 22:00

change the battery yourself, it is not difficult.

flowerstar19 · 27/10/2019 22:08

My DB is a big Apple fan/geek - he says never update as basically they are making older tech unusable as they can't support the latest updates so in the end you have to buy a newer model. I avoid updates as much as I can as I fear he is right! Sorry about your phone :( Can you restore to a back up pre software upgrade?

Bunnyfuller · 27/10/2019 22:17

I seriously wish ‘someone’ would make this built-in-to-go-obsolete/ screwed in a few years. It absolutely goes against anything we’re trying to do to stop wasting shit.

And I’m on my last iPhone. Deliberately doing stuff so you are forced to buy only their own add ons. Making updates that either knacker you phone or fill the memory to make it pointless. Barclays banking app has bought into this - my DH has a 5s and can no longer update it. Last month he became unable to use the Barclays app because it isn’t supported on earlier iOS versions!

BritishHorrorStory · 27/10/2019 23:17

@ffswhatnext How long did you try the hairdryer trick for? I read do it for 10 or 15 seconds but I connected my phone to the charger and then blew the hairdryer on the back of the phone, moving it up and down throughout the battery for about two minutes, then mine turned back on. I then kept it on charge to restore the battery to 100%. I've since got my battery changed so don't have to do that anymore but at least you'll have enough to do any back up or save any photos or anything else that you want? I'm sure there are options to go back to a previous update too, I guess your problem is you just need to get the phone on first. Hairdryer on the battery, while it's in charge, two minutes minimum. Hope that helps

ffswhatnext · 27/10/2019 23:22

Technology will always become obsolete as advances are made. Unfortunately, companies cannot keep supporting older devices. Imagine the support needed if apple or windows had supported machine from when the first models were introduced. Plus it's not just the tech itself that changes but other things. One say the 3, it had no camera function. A factor taken into no longer offering support would have been considering other phones had cameras, how long would people still use that model.
Of course, there would be people who use them. I had an earlier gen ipd for years. The only reason that I changed it was because Apple was doing a replacement service due to safety issues, and exchanging for the shuffle I think they are (the tiny ones), and it was the ones with the video capability. I had purchased it refurbed, to begin with, but they didn't care that they were giving customers a huge upgrade.

Even recently if not now, they have similar things for devices that are no longer supported. And as previously mentioned batteries.

Repair/replacement is something I always consider. If the common problem seems to be the battery then I will replace myself. If it wasn't because of how the phone was operating, that would be my first thought and I would have changed it.

ffswhatnext just going by the rate they bring out new phones, seems to be yearly so mine is next to go tits up.

I bought this one through apple’s finance deal. It was interest free. I notice they don’t do that anymore either.

ffswhatnext · 27/10/2019 23:35

Its not that I want to get the phone on. It switches on. It's just stuck on the apple logo unless it needs charging which shows up the need charging as you would normally see. Until the battery dies all I see is apple.

I will try the hairdryer again tomorrow. Along with anything else. I live in hope and not just willing to replace. The battery gives me hope so in my mind there has to be a fix. Which probably explains my weird obsession with it lol.

But thank you to everyone for the advice. Even if it was simply to try and convert me to android Grin And of course if I get it fixed I will be posting how to sort it out.

The is iPhone3 did have a camera.

I bought an iPhone4 when they were first released in 2010 and loved it, however when I did the iOS 6 update (many years ago) it resulted in me losing all sound/speakers. This happened to thousands of people and a further update corrected this. When iOS7 was released I updated it, but it didn’t work - the iPhone4 couldn’t take it. Not a problem until newer apps required iOS7 to run. My phone had several issues in the fourth year of its life and Apple resurrected it every time at the Genius Bar for no cost (even with a smashed screen and then later a non Apple screen). When they finally couldn’t fix it I bought the just released iPhone6 in late 2014, which I’m still using 5 years later. I’m running in iOS11 and wouldn’t even attempt an iOS update as my phone is so old (not to mention I have no space).

Take it in and see if they can fix it - if not, you’ve had 4 years out if it and buy a new phone. I want the new iPhone11 with 512G storage, but at $2500.00 Australian (£1330.00) to buy outright (which is what I prefer to do), I might just wait until next year (as there’ll probably be another new one released and this one will be slightly cheaper).

ffswhatnext · 27/10/2019 23:40

I know the rate they are now bringing them out is insane. But I suppose they listened to the customers a bit too much. I remember people asking when the next one was coming out with 3 and 4. Somewhere around 5, why doesn't it have the latest technology like X, why can it not do Y. Although of course like all mobile companies, sometimes the new model is mainly about aesthetics.

OP posts:
Lolwhat · 27/10/2019 23:43

They won’t do bugger all, they don’t care about phones older than a year

ffswhatnext · 27/10/2019 23:48

Did it? It's that long ago since it's been out I cannot remember.
I should be near one of their places this week, so will see what they have to say. If it wasn't because of the screen it would be the first place I
went.

How many of you are still using the me.com email instead of icloud.com?

OP posts:
MorganKitten · 27/10/2019 23:50

It’s 3 years old...

MissConductUS · 27/10/2019 23:59

I have a perfectly good Windows 7 machine that will be rendered unusable in late January because Microsoft are going to stop supporting it. It's wrong that tech companies get away with this.

It will still be perfectly usable. If you want to continue to get software updates you can upgrade to Win 10 in about an hour.

support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12435/windows-10-upgrade-faq

Should Microsoft still be supporting Windows 98?

CommonSense99 · 28/10/2019 01:06

OP:
It is completely and totally unreasonable. Your phone is past the point of manufacturer's warranty, limited or extended, and you have no right to demand coverage for free. Tech companies aren't charities, they're for-profit corporate monsters. The policies aren't set by anyone you will talk to or visit to get your phone fixed, they are set by sociopathic economic leeches. I'm not saying it's just, but it is not reasonable for you to expect free stuff because you were unaware of or ignorant to the fine print that is implicit in your purchase. Try to consider this a lesson in intelligent consumer capitalist participation. Also, you may have a claim under consumer law or insurance through the credit card used to make the purchase. Pursue those avenues.

WhatTiggersDoBest · 28/10/2019 02:27

That was one of the issues after the update. Told me I had no storage. I deleted everything and just had the basic apps. Still full.
My iPhone SE (the one that everyone forgets but came after the 6S) has this EXACT problem. And it's stuck in an update loop. I bought an expensive phone as a long-term investment, I don't see why something should be designed to be disposable after a few years like this. I don't want a new phone, I want this one to stop lying about having no storage and to just work. I've tried all the fixes online and nothing gets rid of that huge "other" category in storage.
Still better than having an Android though.

Moondancer73 · 28/10/2019 08:25

Not a hope in hell. I'd struggle not to laugh if you came in and asked that so why wouldnt they? A four year phone is old anyway! YABU - a phone that age has far less memory so by installing the update it's your own fault that it's taken all the memory and messed the phones up 🙄

00100001 · 28/10/2019 08:55

@WhatTiggersDoBest
"Still better than having an Android though"

Hmm

Oh yes having an expensive phone that doesn't work, because you think Apple have made it to be disposable and are making it broken... So much better than having a phone that works... Confused

Lhastingsmua · 28/10/2019 09:33

Yeah it sounds like corrupted software, which can certainly be fixed. Your phone isn’t bricked.

It would be helpful if you could possibly film your phone and post the video or (a screenshot of the video) here. Just so we’re on the same page as to what your phone screen shows.

Basically when your phone is in recovery mode, iTunes will automatically recognise it as a device that needs to be updated/restored. It seems like your current problem is getting your phone into recovery mode as iTunes hasn’t recognised it yet.

TheWorldAsh · 28/10/2019 12:59

@flowerstar19 I'd suggest you don't listen to your brother. Many because by not updating you're leaving your device vulnerable to security vulnerabilities.

Apple has some of the longest support for their phones. They even tear to make sure it works on them. It might not support all the new features but that's just a fact of hardware getting older.

It is sensible to wait for the 0.1 release of a new upgrade (so go to iOS 13.1 not 13.0)

But sure, a trillion dollar company would use underhand tricks to get you to upgrade. Because begrudging forced customers are going to be repeat customers.

People please update your devices as rubbing older software puts you at risk.

TL;DR Seriously Apple don't deliberately brick or slow down your devices.

ffswhatnext · 28/10/2019 15:11

I wouldn't be demanding anything. I am just miffed that their update has corrupted my phone. Anyone would be miffed and think why the fuck should I pay because of their update regardless of the product or age.

I was not ignorant about their t&c's (well aside from not knowing they have changed the warranty of new products).

I know the phone has done well, I would have got the screen fixed if it became a problem. I'm amazed that the battery still had over 75% on it hence one of the reasons why I wasn't looking to change phones because it works for me. I just want my phone working at minimal cost to me, not £150+.

And I really wish people would stop going on about android. Android doesn't have things installed as standard that I need. I have had androids in the past, I am currently forced to use one. And even if I wasn't bothered, either way, it's not like android is perfect. None of them are. But when I purchase something I only do so when the benefits outweigh the negatives.

OP posts:
ffswhatnext · 28/10/2019 15:17

@Lhastingsmua
When the phone is on it shows the Apple logo until the battery dies and it shows the need charging icon.
It will not connect to iTunes on a mac.

Hopefully, they have something in the store that can fix it. But I am aware they sometimes need sending off. And that lands me with a massive bill. If it was a reasonable cost I wouldn't mind paying, just not £150+ especially when you can buy a phone for that.

OP posts:
Lhastingsmua · 28/10/2019 15:24

I don’t think it will be sent off, software problems can be troubleshooted in store (you might have to pop back later in the day) and if it can’t be corrected they will replace the device with a refurbished unit (possibly at cost to you).

If your phone’s buttons work, you may as well try this one more time, as using recovery mode is one thing they’ll attempt in store anyway. Follow the screenshot and if that doesn’t work try DFU mode:

www.macrumors.com/how-to/force-restart-iphone-6s-and-earlier/

Lhastingsmua · 28/10/2019 15:25

This screenshot for recovery mode first, then try the link for DFU mode 2nd.

To think Apple should replace my old phone for free
ffswhatnext · 28/10/2019 15:31

@Lhastingsmua thank you I will be trying again and again until I get into store.
Just reading this thread though has put it in my brain even more that it will be sent off and I will be lumbered with the bill. Although I won't be sending it off.

But oh well shit happens. I messed up by doing the update when I would normally leave it, same with any tech until a patch or whatever was released.
