To think Apple should replace my old phone for free

It's about 3 or 4 years old. Worked beautifully. Ok, that battery wasn't 100% but considering how much I use it, by the time it needs dealing with I would be looking at something else anyway. Which is at least 3 years away.
The screen has a slight crack, but not an issue for me as you don't really notice it and everything worked.

Everything was great until last week and I updated the phone. I am technically competent and have done everything they would have in store. Their policy when sending off is they will fix the screen at my cost. I don't want the screen fixed. Had this update not completely fucked my phone I wouldn't be going to the store. And if I was bothered I would do it myself, which I cannot do because I'm not authorised.

Am I being unreasonable for them to sort out the phone without cost to me?

I haven't been in yet, just trying to gauge an idea if I will have a bit of a 'battle' on my hands.

And no I don't want to switch to android. I have one and hate it lol.

It might be an obvious answer to you, but not me hence I am asking.

The staff at the genius bar may well have a way of forcing a reset that's not available in iTunes. If the update works in other 6S phones but not in yours then your phone has gone faulty and it's well out of warranty. Electronics fail over time due to things like heat stress and humidity. Nothing lasts forever.

I have an 11 year old Subaru Forester that's leaking oil, probably due to the cylinder heads warping. So I'm trading it in and buying a new one. These things happen.

Or try this:

He only uses the home button in the video, not sure if you’ve tried that

Asgoodasarest · 28/10/2019 15:43

@TheWorldAsh that’s a really important point. I’m happy to be corrected if wrong, but I always thought software updates were as much about security and problem fixing as they were about new features? I’ve always updated as I didn’t want to leave my device vulnerable.

BourbonAndTea · 28/10/2019 16:03

Someone I know did the latest update on his iPhone 7, it killed it, Apple couldn't fix it so he had to buy a new phone, no offer of discount or anything like that..!!

... people are entitled to go in about Android just as much as you're allowed to drone on about iOS.

I use both and prefer android, but still like iOS. But that's just Eva unlike the widgets and the fact the apps are in alphabetical order etc.

BritishHorrorStory · 28/10/2019 17:33

@ffswhatnext
When the phone is on it shows the Apple logo until the battery dies and it shows the need charging icon.

This was the exact problem mine had and I tried every single bit of advice listed above. The only way that I literally got past the ‘loop’ was by putting in charge and blasting a hairdryer at the battery for a few minutes as I mentioned before. I know it wasn’t a fluke because as my battery was so rubbish, I lost power and had to do it a few times to get it back on when it was stuck in the loop. But I should say mine was a battery problem, not after an update.

ffswhatnext · 28/10/2019 17:44

British, yea I've been trying various things again throughout the day. Something might work, stranger things have happened. Might as well keep trying.

00100001 I know I was just having a rant whilst thinking the same thing could have happened on android. Not like corruptions pause and think ooops nope wrong model or whatever, and yell back up everyone 🤣

Update.
Felt sorry for the staff today.
Phones that have been jailbroken aren't being touched. One woman was complaining loudly to her mate about it's unfair because they wouldn't touch it, and by the time they left she was telling someone that they fucked her over.

If you've done the download and it's glitchy, take it in. Don't do the hard reset or anything. Basically it confuses the phone and makes things worse. Ooops. As long as it's not jailbroken or nicked they didn't care where it comes from.

Had I not tried haha it could have been in the store.

I lucked out because part of the phone fell under the replacement program. And the manager has discretion when there's some damage. I'm not getting charged and he's given me written confirmation.

Please check the replacement programs for your phone. It's not just batteries, but screens, cameras, cables and chargers for a variety of products. And there are products that go back years.

I'd gone to a few independent places beforehand and a couple said software but most was the battery. Glad I didn't just go with the first place.

Thank you, everyone, for giving helpful advice. And for not questioning why I was asking such a silly question.

WTF did she expect after loading unauthorized software on her phone?

Lhastingsmua · 30/10/2019 10:43

OP, just out of interest which Apple store was this?

Most jail-break software providers specifically state that installing it will void your warranty/Apple support so the woman had no grounds to complain.

Deedoubleyou · 30/10/2019 10:55

Obviously they're not going to give you a free phone - your phone is 4 years old and has a cracked screen. You wouldn't take a four old pair of jeans back if they wore away. Whether the update caused your issues or not, you either buy a new phone yourself or pay to have it repaired.

Shooturlocalmethdealer · 30/10/2019 13:28

Apple would be out of business if they replaced old phones for everyone. They constantly release updates so older phones are bricked. Apple even admitted to doing this. Hence why i refuse to buy Apple. I have a Samusng S10 plus and it blows apple out of the water.

DinaCaliente · 30/10/2019 13:33

My other half got a replacement iPhone 7 from Apple when an update bricked it before.

I updated my spare iPhone SE which I think was the one after the 6s to ios 13 and it seems fine.

ffswhatnext · 30/10/2019 19:14

That’s why I was paying so much attention to her. I was just amazed and I thought I was a cheeky fucker 🤣 happens a lot apparently.
