To think Apple should replace my old phone for free

It's about 3 or 4 years old. Worked beautifully. Ok, that battery wasn't 100% but considering how much I use it, by the time it needs dealing with I would be looking at something else anyway. Which is at least 3 years away.
The screen has a slight crack, but not an issue for me as you don't really notice it and everything worked.

Everything was great until last week and I updated the phone. I am technically competent and have done everything they would have in store. Their policy when sending off is they will fix the screen at my cost. I don't want the screen fixed. Had this update not completely fucked my phone I wouldn't be going to the store. And if I was bothered I would do it myself, which I cannot do because I'm not authorised.

Am I being unreasonable for them to sort out the phone without cost to me?

I haven't been in yet, just trying to gauge an idea if I will have a bit of a 'battle' on my hands.

And no I don't want to switch to android. I have one and hate it lol.

It might be an obvious answer to you, but not me hence I am asking.

I knew I was being unreasonable loi.
Just you never know.
I have had excellent years of loyal service from my phone. And would have had more if it wasn't because of the update.
It was my fault as usually wait a few weeks to update anything.

Battery issues, check with them as they are always doing free replacements on certain models. Well, same with a lot of their stuff. Had an ipod changed years ago by them through their replacement scheme. And the ipod was really old.

You are complaining about apple but refusing to move any where else, android aren't even that different, they aren't gonna give you a new phone your last was cracked ffs

AJPTaylor · 27/10/2019 17:11

Try a local phone repair place instead?

TheWorldAsh · 27/10/2019 17:11

TL;DR Batteries are consumable items, an iPhone 6s is an old phone. Apple aren't evil.

We have a fleet of iPhone 6s at work. Some have now gotten to the stage they need to be replaced due to battery degradation, but most haven't. Yes even those running iOS 13.

Apple didn't deliberately screw the battery life with updates. What they did do previously was throttle some older phones to prevent issues due to failing batteries without telling folks and that was wrong.

Whilst Apple's customer service is great (I've had one iMac and one MacBook repaired for free well out of warranty) it's unlikely they'll do anything for a 6s that's essentially reached the end of its life and has a cracked screen.

Apples customer service is well renown, but they're still a company that likes to make a profit.

Good luck!

peakygal · 27/10/2019 17:13

IPhone users say they hate Androids yet its IPhones that give the most problems Hmm

ffswhatnext · 27/10/2019 17:14

Yes, I always back up. I got stung years ago with not backing up photos, so now things like those backups have backups lol. I only lost a couple of pics, but still a few too many.

I'm always bemused by people stating that it's "wrong" that tech companies make things obsolete on threads like this.

It's almost like their running a business or something?!

If your phone is from 2014 6S it's not supported and that's stated online says techie husband. Unfortunately it won't work with the update as it's too big for its capability.

Technology moves on. It's one of those don't update and just use old gear or keep up situations. I love my XR.

I'm with you though. I used Samsung for years and now can't stand it after using IOS. Husband is techie and uses Samsung.

TheWorldAsh · 27/10/2019 17:17

@HeresMe "But you won't as you have bought into the apple ecosystem which is so overrated."

Thanks for your opinion. Glad you feel that way. I'll stick with the decidedly underrated ecosystem where my Apple computers, my phone, iPad, and those own by my family seamlessly integrate.

It's better than anything Android has (ps. I have no problem with Android but it doesn't work for me. I use it on my works phone with only an occasional grumble Grin)

ffswhatnext · 27/10/2019 17:21

Not in this house. The is the first issue I've had with apple, and I started with them on 3. I could switch it on now and use, but a lot of the apps wouldn't if any. Never paid full price for one.
I have had androids in the past because I have fancied a change or work-related, it's what I'm using at the moment. My dc's switched from apple to android and now looking to move back.

doublebarrellednurse your techie husband is incorrect.

The latest/iOS13 update is compatible with the 6s and that’s stated online here: www.apple.com/uk/ios/ios-13/

Whatever’s wrong with the OP’s phone, it’s not the update.

hidinginthenightgarden · 27/10/2019 17:25

Have a go on the chat. Ask for a manager and be super super polite about it. My DH does this and they always agree to fix for free.

ffswhatnext · 27/10/2019 17:25

@vbhafjlb
Thank you for that. Because I just kept thinking if it wasn't supported the update should not have happened. And that would have been easier to show it was their fuck up.

OP posts:
MidnightBlue28 · 27/10/2019 17:27

Can you go back to the previous iOS from the last backup you did before install?

There are big problems with iOS 13... it’s no use to you now but I always google the update and see what issues people are having... this iOS update has plenty so I am avoiding it like the plague.

ffswhatnext · 27/10/2019 17:29

@hidinginthenightgarden I am still tempted to go into the shop. The only reason not online is because at least if I cannot explain something I can show them, not that there's anything to see. But then I think does that make me a cheeky fucker simply because of the screen issue.

OP posts:
ffswhatnext · 27/10/2019 17:31

No, I am stuck on the apple logo screen. Otherwise, I would go back to the last IOS.

OP posts:
Temeraire · 27/10/2019 17:32

iPhone 6s should still run IOS 13.1 according to Apple website. It would be completely unacceptable for them to release an update that bricks phones en masse. I have an older iPhone and it simply doesn’t offer me the option to update to 13.

Akire · 27/10/2019 17:32

I’ve got an iPhone 6 it’s 18m old from O2 shop and still have 6m left to pay for it so it can’t be its a “6 it’s too old.”

Blibbyblobby · 27/10/2019 17:39

I stopped using Apple for exactly this reason. Had a 1st gen ipad mini I was happy with but kept on an older version of the OS as I knew it wouldn't cope with a newer one.

Took it in for a paid repair, Apple swapped for same spec hardware but under their policy had to have the latest OS.

Outcome for me was the mini ipad with new OS was pretty much unusable. Haven't bought an Apple product since.

PettyContractor · 27/10/2019 17:42

Am I the only one not understanding the issue? The OP's phone doesn't work after a software upgrade. Presumably it would work again if the previous version of software were reinstalled.

What's the cracked screen got to do with the price of fish? Are Apple saying they won't fix one problem unless OP pays to have a completely unrelated problem fixed at the same time? Alternatively, why would a software problem require the phone to be opened up?

ffswhatnext · 27/10/2019 17:43

@BlaueLagune I have used the Consumer Rights act in the past for an old washing machine that broke after 13 months. I think that's why companies like apple do a replacement scheme.
It's why I don't have insurance in general for appliances, as it's only if lost or like the screen that it would cost me money. And even with insurance, there can also be an excess fee. Instead the money goes into my savings.
And the companies that use the insurance in that first year are despicable. That's what made me question the insurance thing in the first place.
It's mis-selling surely as they never mention when flogging the policy along with the dishwasher that it's covered anyway. But then why would they?

OP posts:
HarrietSchulenberg · 27/10/2019 17:43

This is exactly why I use Android. Thanks for this thread. DS3 is 12 and wanted an iphone for Christmas but this has helped him to change his mind. Good job as he wasn't getting one anyway.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 27/10/2019 17:46

a) dont update old phones (android doesn't even allow this to happen)
b) use a screen protector + case to prevent cracks
c) use a phone where you can put in a brand new battery yourself
d) dont expect smart phones to last forever
e) dont know about apple but you can get a program on your computer to do a hard reset on your phone
f) and obviously keep everything backed up

PookieDo · 27/10/2019 17:46

It doesn’t matter. They will do nothing
DD’s 5S bricked after their IOS update and they will take no responsibility for it at all, especially 4 years old!
DD’s phone was literally 2 weeks out of warranty Angry

PettyContractor · 27/10/2019 17:47

Sorry I missed the thread title about replacing the phone. I thought OP was complaining they wouldn't sort out her device.

PookieDo · 27/10/2019 17:48

@ffswhatnext

You could try reinstalling it all completely via iTunes on a computer
If that doesn’t work then it is bricked and nothing will fix it. And they do not care if IOS breaks the phone either
