To think Apple should replace my old phone for free

It's about 3 or 4 years old. Worked beautifully. Ok, that battery wasn't 100% but considering how much I use it, by the time it needs dealing with I would be looking at something else anyway. Which is at least 3 years away.
The screen has a slight crack, but not an issue for me as you don't really notice it and everything worked.

Everything was great until last week and I updated the phone. I am technically competent and have done everything they would have in store. Their policy when sending off is they will fix the screen at my cost. I don't want the screen fixed. Had this update not completely fucked my phone I wouldn't be going to the store. And if I was bothered I would do it myself, which I cannot do because I'm not authorised.

Am I being unreasonable for them to sort out the phone without cost to me?

I haven't been in yet, just trying to gauge an idea if I will have a bit of a 'battle' on my hands.

And no I don't want to switch to android. I have one and hate it lol.

It might be an obvious answer to you, but not me hence I am asking.

"I have a perfectly good Windows 7 machine that will be rendered unusable in late January because Microsoft are going to stop supporting it. It's wrong that tech companies get away with this."

Nonsense.

You can still use Windows 3.1 if you wanted... it won't be "unusable". Just means that it won't get updates... Confused

ffswhatnext · 27/10/2019 20:00

@FlamingoAndJohn it wasn't anything to do with the install. It's a message you used to at least, when you try and update anything no longer supported.

@ PookieDo Yea I think it's dead/bricked whatever. Which is a shame, he never let me down.

@Not insured. It's a calculated risk I take considering the protections we have as consumers.

@BritishHorrorStory I have tried that which makes it so frustrating. There's still life in there somewhere.

@LemonPrism the phone is still supported. We all know that all tech that needs updates becomes obsolete. It should be considered when purchasing goods.

It's not that I am expecting it to still be as good as it was a month ago never mind when I first bought it. After all, it's apple and should have died long ago!! It did what I needed to do, yea sometimes siri annoyed the crap out of me when he couldn't understand me, but his interpretations were often funny. I was perfectly happy with the screen and battery and realistically unless I did real damage it would have worked a lot longer.
It's just because of the update it's not working which is so frustrating. And even more so because if it wasn't because of mobile phone policies (they all have this) I could get the screen replaced at a reasonable cost and if they admitted fault it could hopefully be fixed. Even the android I'm now using has something about authorised only.

Think anyone would be annoyed regardless of what the product is.

Haha just reading back sounds like I have attachment issues to my phone. He just never let me down lol

@HarrietSchulenberg "this" - what exactly is this? Are you seriously telling me no Android phone ever has battery failure or problems with an update*?

  • Insert joke about Android phones never actually getting updates here.
TheWorldAsh · 27/10/2019 20:11

@ffswhatnext you need to put your phone in DFU mode and do a restore that way.

@HeresMe Overpriced? A Microsoft Surface Pro costs as much as a MacBook. The other flagship Android phones cost as much as an iPhone. Apple are expensive, not overpriced. (Sure you can get a Windows laptop for like £300 but they're cheap for a reason)

Anyway, neither Google nor Microsoft make both the hardware and software across all devices (smartphone, tablet, computer) so whilst sure there's some integration of their ecosystems it isn't up to the level Apple provides.

But you pays your money, you takes your choice, use what works for you. I've been an Apple user since 1984. I'm sticking around for a little longer. Smile

HeresMe · 27/10/2019 20:17

Sue you can apple.but let's be honest you have used it since 1984, litrally no has since then we are taking about mobile eco systems, apple ties you stop being Thier mouth piece

ffswhatnext · 27/10/2019 20:21

It won't connect to Itunes. It's the endless Apple screen false hope when it disappears. It's been trying all day. And connected to a mac (yea I know that ecosystem.

@Lhastingsmua thank you for the link, I will have a look and fingers crossed.

@Theresnobslikeshowbs yes I did, and paranoid me also ensured I have my contact elsewhere. When you've seen no records of any messages sent/received you get a bit paranoid lol.

There's no genius bar locally. While I am out and about this week I will look at the repair options.... Ooohhh . find phone icloud restore from there iirc.

I have a 6s. What update is this? Will my phone stop working soon???

yunalis · 27/10/2019 20:25

But are you putting it in recovery or just connecting it to itunes and hoping for a miracle?

BTW, google update their phones monthly at a bare minimum.

Posey67 · 27/10/2019 20:28

I work for a phone company (social media side) and iPhones have a 12 month warranty, android 24 months. If apple have told you to repair the screen, its because they need you to bring the phone up to warranty standards. Once that's done, they can review and fix any other issues. However, they wont even address the bricking issues until the screen is repaired.

Your next option could be going to apple Twitter or Facebook. Again, if this was me I'd only offer a like for like swap if the phone was within the first 12 months.

In this situation, I'd take the phone to a third party for a quote on a repair

ffswhatnext · 27/10/2019 20:40

The phone is stuck and cannot bypass to recovery. It charges. The need charging icon pops up.
I even just had the daft idea of seeing icloud to check what could be done.
I've tried connecting with and without itunes open.

I've trying to sort this phone out for days.

A part of me also doesn't want to go anywhere. Cos I know what will happen. I will explain all the batshit phone did from the moment of the update and what I have done. I will hand the phone over and the bastard will spring to life and operate perfectly.

@Posey67
When did Apple change their policy? Every phone, pad and pod I have ever bought has come with a standard 2 year. (Have also purchased as part of a previous job). Although admittedly it was around 3 or 4 years ago Grin

Avenilson · 27/10/2019 20:56

The need charging icon pops up Now I am confused, is it the apple logo on a grey background or the needs charging icon that is on screen all the time?. If you are stuck with an apple logo and then the needs charging icon appears intermittently, the problem is the battery. I think apple charge 90 (euros) but you can get non-apple batteries for 10 and you can change it yourself? Why don't you do that?

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 27/10/2019 21:06

I’ve got a seven plus. Have I got about a year left on it before it stops updating? Brilliant. I’ve had a look at the equivalent sized eleven and it would cost me about £1200. Fuck that, I could buy a whole computer for that.

ffswhatnext · 27/10/2019 21:12

Sorry, this is why I wouldn't do an online chat, I confuse people lol.

At some point today the battery would have died, and when I pressed something the charge battery icon appeared. Put it onto charge and back to the Apple icon startup thing. I checked to see if it was a glitch and took it off charge and the icon appeared.

It's those two things why I am convinced it's salvageable and doing everything I can to wake it up essentially. And yes I tried true loves kiss (joke, maybe)

Oh dear I have an iPhone 6S which keeps asking me to update it! I couple of years ago Apple did something that destroyed people's battery life on older phones and they replaced the batteries.

ffswhatnext · 27/10/2019 21:18

@MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig I don't see how you would have less than a year less. There is still support for the 6S at least for the moment anyway. There's currently a power issue program apple are running for the 6. You have ages left yet.

@Tun55 I usually wait a few weeks so it gives them time to iron out any glitches.

finn1020 · 27/10/2019 21:23

I’ve got a iPhone 6s which I can’t update as I don’t have enough space without deleting stuff ... there’s hardly anything on it anyway and each update takes more and more space. Battery in the past year has gotten so bad it can dive from 100% to complexly flat within half a day, even when it not being used.

Even though I’ve used apple for years I’m converting to android soon, I’m sick of apple issues.

ffswhatnext · 27/10/2019 21:26

Yea they are always running battery replacement services. That's why I'm not bothered that the battery cannot be changed. If it's one of the bad batches they replace.
If it wasn't because of the crack, even though its old they would try and help without charge.

When I'm out about during the week I will go into various shops and see what can be done and how much. If not, I will replace that's why I set aside the insurance money every month.

OP posts:
ffswhatnext · 27/10/2019 21:27

@finn1020 have you put your serial number into the battery program?

@BlueLagune :

You know microsoft gave everyone the option to upgrade to windows 10 from 7 for free? It should have been impossible to miss.....

Windows 7 is over 10 years old, how long do you want them to keep supporting it for?

www.zdnet.com/article/heres-how-you-can-still-get-a-free-windows-10-upgrade/ This should allow you to upgrade to windows 10.

GingerFoxInAT0phat · 27/10/2019 21:33

I updated my iPhone 7 last year and straight away the speaker and microphone stopped working and it wouldn’t make or receive phone calls. I could use it through my Mac to speak to people and everything else worked.

Apple was no use at all, after various phone calls and pratting about with it, giving them my address to send a box out to get it repaired they casually dropped the £300 and odd repair charge and no guarantee it could be fixed.
I took it to an Apple licensed retailer and they wouldn’t even look at it because it was out of warranty.

Luckily it was insured and they sent a new one immediately without any questions. (Not Apple insurance)

SunshineAngel · 27/10/2019 21:37

I actually think having a phone for 3-4 years is quite reasonable.

No, they don't have to replace it. It's out of warranty.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 27/10/2019 21:40

I would absolutely take it to an Apple store.

I’ve had a very similar issue with my iPhone 6s and online support were useless. The store were brilliant and fixed my phone with a new battery (at their cost) even though the phone was out of warranty. The fault had reoccurred and I’m going through the motions with online support but I’ll end up taking it to the store, I expect.

Oh, any my phone screen had a crack in it - they still fixed it.

Nat6999 · 27/10/2019 21:48

Most Apple phones only have a 2-3 year life, technology moves on & the updates usually start dropping the older phones off as processors improve.

Posey67 · 27/10/2019 21:59

As far as I'm aware, the warranty period has always been the same and we always stress that any repairs regardless of the compare are in line with the manufacturers warranty. I think if your phone had been 2 years old, it's likely apple would have replaced it, but at 4 or 5 yeara its extremely unlikely.

I think I'd weigh up the cost of the phone against any repair charges you'd incur.
