Friend of the family, 20 years old, boyfriend of 6 months proposed to her last night. Aibu to think it will end in tears or am I just cynical?

@LavendarGreen I never told you that you were wrong or talking rubbish so not sure why you think I did - I gave you my experience that shows young people in serious relationships can work too.

I got engaged in my 20th birthday, six months after we met. Our engagement lasted 3.5 years and we have now been married for nearly 7 years, with two DC. My in-laws met and married within 3 months and are still together nearly 40 years later. No one can know what is going to happen, and I know people who were together for years, got married and then everything fell apart within a year because they saw marriage as a band aid to their relationship.
I also don't think being engaged is the same as being married - it's not nearly as difficult to end if something goes wrong, for example!

I know someone who’s been engaged 7 times! Never been married though Grin I reckon her getting engaged is the same as anyone else deciding to be official boyfriend and girlfriend.

Why might she live to regret it, OP?

However, I expect my mum felt the same. I got married at 22 after a fairly short relationship. Still together 18 years later. Ups and downs but we've luckily grown together in the same life direction. I'm not sure I'd be any better at choosing a partner now, than I was then.

To get married and have babies very young is tying yourself to a life of drudgery.

Incorrect. No life of drudgery here! My 32 years (and still going) have been fun, exciting, entertaining, educational.... drudgery? Never!
