Not to get the point of an ipad

If you’ve got an iPhone. Is it really worth having?

(Context- DS wants one for Christmas. He has an iPhone. The iPad is within my budget but I’ve never had one myself and don’t really get the point. iPad fans, educate me!)

SoyDora · 24/10/2019 18:30

I’ve got one and I never use it because I use my phone!

JosephineDeBeauharnais · 24/10/2019 18:31

I've got both. I only use the phone for phoning Grin.

BrieAndChilli · 24/10/2019 18:32

I use a tablet to watch things on like when I’m cooking or folding laundry.
It’s bigger screen so easier to do internet shopping etc on

From a child’s point of view easier to play games on and watch programmes. Can be put on the side still watched while drawing/homework/plying with Lego etc

Taswama · 24/10/2019 18:32

Well the screen is a lot bigger so easier to watch TV, film etc.

chipsandpeas · 24/10/2019 18:33

i have both ipad and iphone, ipad is a bigger screen so better for the internet and some apps imo and watching youtube or tv on it
it will all depend on what he will use it for

minniemoll · 24/10/2019 18:33

I have an iPhone and an iPad, I definitely use the iPad more - it's just a more pleasant experience seeing things on the bigger screen. And lots of games are easier to play on it too, imo.

Candle1000 · 24/10/2019 18:34

I listen to you tube documentaries on my iPad while playing candy crush on my iPhone Grin

ALemonyPea · 24/10/2019 18:34

I have both, I use my iPhone mainly for phone things, my iPad for everything else.

SuchAToDo · 24/10/2019 18:35

I don't have an iPad or iPhone myself....so I'm just guessing...could it be bigger screen size on iPad?..do you get a keyboard with iPad?...more memory?...

I'm of the same mindset as you op and previous poster, if the iPhone can do it all, then what's the point of the iPad...

PickAChew · 24/10/2019 18:41

If you just want to watch TV, an ipad is a bloody expensive way to do that.

I have an ancient ipad mini 2. I use it for little more than playing puzzle games and displaying occasional recipes, though not all the websites even work properly on it, any more.

AliMonkey · 24/10/2019 18:41

I don’t have one but DC do. They had them before they got phones and stopped using them when first got phones but I encouraged them to use rather than phone when watching YouTube or similar as better on big screen and they now admit I was right. Ours don’t have contract so use in WiFi only so only cost us initial outlay.

I personally just use the PC when I want to watch something or will be using screen for a while. You can also use tablet as mini laptop and link to external keyboard etc.

SpookilyBadOooooooh · 24/10/2019 18:41

I have an iPhone & an iPad (mini). I wouldn’t be without either (as in, I would replace the same day if anything happened to
one of them).

Screen sizes of the phone and (even the Mini ) iPad make it worth having both, plus websites are different on the phone than the iPad. I’m considering an iPad (full size) or a MacBook for the extra screen size

Some games are much better on one or the other depending on the type of game.

BentNeckLady · 24/10/2019 18:43

I mostly use mine for watching TV on in bed/the bath/while cooking. I wouldn’t want to be without it really.

YouFellAsleeep · 24/10/2019 18:45

I’ve got both. I use mostly just my iPad when at home and my phone for when I’m out. They sync perfectly together so all my messages, notes, internet browsing are available on either device. I prefer the bigger screen of the iPad for watching video and whatever else I’m doing. My son also has both although his iPhone is a few years old but he mostly just uses the iPad. He’s got the pencil for it as well and likes to draw.

teamthirteen · 24/10/2019 18:47

Like a PP, I use my iPad for watching TV in bed or the bath or when cooking. It’s an ancient iPad 2 which I’ve had for about 6 years and I don’t think it could handle anything else. I wouldn’t be without it though Grin

ChocOrCheese · 24/10/2019 18:48

I have both and use the iPad much more. I find it much better for reading, browsing the internet, drawing etc. Basically I prefer the bigger screen.

leomama81 · 24/10/2019 18:50

Yeah, I'm the same. I've got a MacBook Air, so perhaps that makes a difference but if you have any kind of laptop and also an iPhone then an iPad just seems really superfluous?

SoyDora · 24/10/2019 18:50

I don’t play games or watch TV anywhere other than on the TV, so that’s probably why mine is no use to me Grin

HoldMyLobster · 24/10/2019 18:51

DD is at university and takes all her notes on an iPad, reads her books, views presentations and slides, checks her schedule, pretty much everything. She hardly carries anything else around with her.

Quite a specific use though.

Chloemol · 24/10/2019 18:54

I have both. The iPad is larger and a better screen when watching something, takes better photos etc. Better for the kindle app etc. I use the phone as a phone mainly

Ginkypig · 24/10/2019 18:54

I use an iPad for almost anything I would have used a laptop for except for playing anything that needs a disk or (without the added keyboard that I don't own) things that require a lot of writing like essays etc I could technically use a phone instead but the screen is too small.

Neither of those things could be done on the phone either so they would both be redundant.

So basically yes I use the iPad.

Aragog · 24/10/2019 18:57

DH and DD both use theirs for watching TV and films. A phone screen is way too small for that.

I have an iPad Pro and I use mine for work on the go. I use it in meetings to write notes, using the pencil, and I use it to research things when away from my laptop.

At home I use my Mac Air mostly, but don't want to take my laptop aout and about with me. My phone is too small to use for making notes and doing actual work on comfortably.

Aragog · 24/10/2019 18:58

DH and DD do use their iPads for other stuff - but again, its screen size over the phone.

Veterinari · 24/10/2019 18:59

If it’s just for games, tv, Internet then kindle fires or other tablets are significantly cheaper than an iPad and do the same job. I’m an Apple dan but have no idea why any one would spend so much in an iPad specifically

CAG12 · 24/10/2019 18:59

I used to think this before my friend got an Ipad. Then I understood and got my own.

Id say if you only use your phone for calling and messaging its not worth it. Everything else is a much better experience with an Ipad
