Not to get the point of an ipad

If you’ve got an iPhone. Is it really worth having?

(Context- DS wants one for Christmas. He has an iPhone. The iPad is within my budget but I’ve never had one myself and don’t really get the point. iPad fans, educate me!)

My ipad lives in the kitchen. I use it for watching Netflix while I'm cooking and washing up. I use my phone outside of the kitchen.

speakout · 24/10/2019 19:03

My DD just bought one ( 19 ) She finds in invaluable for University work.
She was carrying around a laptop, but she finds it great for her lifestyle- writing essays in Starbucks, taking notes in lectures etc. She has bought an extrnal keyboard.

CileyMayRhinovirus · 24/10/2019 19:04

I hear you.

I find an iPhone, a laptop and an internet TV covers all I need really. Tablets just end up uncharged in a draw in my house once the initial enthusiasm has waned

StreetwiseHercules · 24/10/2019 19:05

I have never understood the appeal of iPads or any kind of tablet really other than for small kids.

I have an iPhone and a MacBook. iPads are just pointless. Awkward to hold and silly for typing things in.

speakout · 24/10/2019 19:06

in a draw ??

CileyMayRhinovirus is that like a raffle ? Or a lucky dip?

Cantrememberpassword · 24/10/2019 19:08

I love my iPad have the phone too but the iPad is my favourite, could not do without it.

CaptainHammer · 24/10/2019 19:08

I use my phone when I’m out but iPad when I’m at home. The bigger screen is better for watching YouTube and typing pointless shite on forums.

CileyMayRhinovirus · 24/10/2019 19:12

@speakout

A drawer sorry

Hydrogenbeatsoxygen · 24/10/2019 19:13

I use my iPad mini all the time. My iPhone is too small for how I use the internet.

Pharlapwasthebest · 24/10/2019 19:16

I use both equally. The iPad is much bigger, so it’s easier to use for some things.

speakout · 24/10/2019 19:16

Don't worry, I am a pedant.

ForalltheSaints · 24/10/2019 19:19

A tablet I find is very useful when travelling on holiday. Things to watch on the journey, and I can research opening times of museums, other attractions, check timetables for buses and trains, for example. Much easier than on a phone, and only needs wi-fi which almost all hotels have.

Lwmommy · 24/10/2019 19:26

I have the iPad mini 5, just a bit bigger than a kindle. I love it and use it all the time.

Have the kindle app so I can read on it, perfect size to browse the web and play games.

I also have the Apple Pencil and an app that lets me handwritten them it converts it to typed and saves as word or pdf. I use that at work for notes in meetings or when travelling so I don't have to lug my laptop around. Just access my work stuff via office 365.

BertieBotts · 24/10/2019 19:30

It's a lot better for games, film/TV/video, some apps (e.g. stop motion), reading, some kinds of browsing.

I don't need any of this because I do gaming, TV, and browsing primarily on my computer.

Essentially it is the modern answer to a laptop. Useful for all laptop things that don't necessarily need a physical keyboard (though you can actually get a separate keyboard for them too).

watermelon21 · 24/10/2019 19:32

I use mine for uni. They have an app called goodnotes which I use every single day for it. I have the pencil and keyboard too. I love mine

Amummyatlast · 24/10/2019 19:43

I have both. My iPad is for browsing the internet —mumsnet— and my phone is for texting, calls and photos. My phone is mainly for use outside of the home; when in the house I always use the iPad because of the bigger screen.

PettyContractor · 24/10/2019 19:44

I have never understood the appeal of iPads or any kind of tablet really other than for small kids.

I have a phone, a tablet and a PC.

I used to just have a PC and not see the point of a smartphone or tablet.

I got a smartphone because it became a better option for navigation than a dedicated device. It now has 101 other uses as well.

I got a tablet so I could run a piano-teaching app. Never tried the app on a phone, but I suspect the screen-size would make the experience a lot worse. Now that I have the tablet, I've occasionally used it as a portable TV when someone else is hogging the living room TV. It's also my internet browser when I'm on holiday.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 24/10/2019 20:01

I have both. I use the iPad far more. Much easier to view things on. I use the iPhone when I'm on the go, but if I'm at home use the iPad. Not all the phone apps are available for iPads though.

Fstar · 24/10/2019 20:06

I like bigger screen for watching online content and using internet, phone is ok for on the go stuff but battery drains quicker too

OhMsBeliever · 24/10/2019 20:08

I have both. I didn't see the point in having both, but my mum gave me hers. And I love the iPad, mainly for the bigger screen, so I use it home. And my phone goes out with me.

I watch YouTube and other videos on it, read books on it and play games.

I have a few games on my phone but prefer the bigger screen to play on.

My phone has stuff like my bank app, parking app for town, bill payment app, period tracker, railcard and most importantly my music!

BoomBoomsCousin · 24/10/2019 20:11

I have a laptop, iPhone, and iPad. I probably use the iPad the most.

Games are, generally, better on the iPad than iPhone. Quite a few aren't available on the iPhone or only in an abbreviated form. But the iPad isn't anything like a games console or a serious gaming computer.

With a keyboard case I can pretty much use my iPad as a computer. I'm tempted to not replace my laptop when it comes to the end of its life because the iPad is good enough for almost everything I do now. Plus, the iPad is really portable - great for taking to classes, for instance, or on holiday. I often take it to a cafe when I have serious writing to do and it's much easier than carting my laptop. I also use it as a kindle and read hours a day on it - my phone and laptop aren't anything like as good for that.

It will all depend on what your son wants the iPad for and how much he ends up liking it. You can ask him about the former but he won't knwo that latter until he tries.

Babybel90 · 24/10/2019 20:15

I have both, I like the iPad for watching TV, so if DH is watching a horror film on TV I can sit next to him on the sofa and watch Netflix, I take it on holiday too so I can watch stuff on the plane or when I’m camping or read books on it.

The bigger screen is better for internet shopping too.

It’s definitely a nice to have but no one needs an iPad.

WrongKindOfFace · 24/10/2019 20:23

Nobody needs one, but a tablet is much better for tv, reading, online browsing etc.

speakout · 24/10/2019 20:25

WrongKindOfFace

Nobody needs one- of course, but then nobody "needs" a laptop, phone, or even a TV.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 24/10/2019 20:26

I have iPhone, MacBook and an iPad and use all three differently. I don't use my ipad that much at home, but it's invaluable when travelling or on holiday for watching films or reading on kindle app. DS uses his to watch Netflix and play games.
