So the other day I emailed the lullaby trust to ask:

To think one can go for a pee when their newborn is asleep?

I wonder if the sound of breathing would help?

It isn’t the sound of breathing that reduces the risk of breathing.

The reason it is advised that an adult is in a room with the baby is because it is expired carbon dioxide that triggers a baby’s breathing system.

When the baby’s respiratory system senses a heightened sense of carbon dioxide within the system then exhalation is trigged.

If the baby is in a room with an adult/s the levels of carbon dioxide in the air are higher, due to the adult breathing it out, than if they were in a room on their own - ergo there is much less chance of their breathing system coming to a halt.

Just looked and Denmark has SIDS rate of 0.09 per 1000 and UK has 0.3 per 1000.
I don't think the obsession with having baby with you all the time is justified,
Surely there is more risk from co sleeping & parents being exhausted from lack of sleep because they're obsessed with these guidelines? So dropping off to sleep on sofa for example.

@ArcticHair what's the advice given where you are? Is side sleeping ok?
