To think this is a pathetic response to complaint about smart meter harassment?

Our energy supplier, Eon,has been sending a ridiculous level of smart meter shite our way for months (emails, text message, letter, it's silly). I can't understand why they're pushing it so aggressively when I've told them we can't have one because the meter location doesn't get mobile 3g/4g signal at all (we literally don't get any signal in that half of the house) and we switch supplier a lot so unless they find one that doesn't need signal and can work when switching.. there's no bloody point to keep harassing us.

I've got so fed up I actually sat down and wrote a letter because I keep adding them to junk/block lists but their shit still arrives .. telling them to STOP using our contact details to make it sound like it's a legal requirement...

And they've just got back to my complaint to say they can stop the communications soak "for three months". If I want their messages to stop after, I'll need to contact them to ask to be stopped again for 3 months. Ffs.

Has anyone else been in this position? I'm going to switch supplier earlier this year than normal just to get away from their fucking messages (3 SMS in a 48hr period, then emails two days in a row)..

Is there an energy supplier out there who's less .. aggressive.. with their Comms??

Sorry as in, their messages about the meter makes it sound like it's a legal requirement, I mean

Well I suggest you avoid EDF also if you are sick of being harassed. I’ve made it extremely clear I don’t want one (moving in weeks to months, like switching suppliers which meter wouldn’t support and hate a hard sell) and get multiple weekly calls, mail drops, letters etc despite asking them to bloody well stop. Again presented as I MUST switch which I know is a load of bollocks. It’s infuriating!

BenjiB · 16/10/2019 16:41

We don’t want one as I dint believe they are safe, i’ve Heard that Bulb don’t use them. I don’t believe Smart meters don’t use WiFi though.

gamerchick · 16/10/2019 16:45

I don't think there are any and switching now they may make it a requirement to have one.

I totally lost it at the poor bugger who told me that in order to come off standard tarrif I had to accept a smart meter. I've put a lock on the door the meters in.

Gizlotsmum · 16/10/2019 16:46

Would recommend bulb. No problems switching too them, no changes in dd costs since I started (in fact they went down slightly) No smart meter and no pressure to get one.

OnlyLittleMissOrganised · 16/10/2019 16:47

My husband signed up to eon and has been having the same issues. It says in all the info apparently when you sign up that you agree to me marketed to about smart meters. They do seem to be super eager and we like you switch once a year so installing a meter would actually not benefit us.

gamerchick · 16/10/2019 16:48

I wouldn't trust bulb as far as I could chuck them yet. Their irritating referal links infecting the internet make me feel stabby.

EmmaStone · 16/10/2019 16:49

I've swapped suppliers a few times - the smaller ones haven't asked about smart meters at all.

LakieLady · 16/10/2019 16:58

Try Shell Energy.

I actually want a Smart meter (we never get a meter reader call and our meter is hard to access). Had an appointment, they changed it, I had to cancel as couldn't make that date/time and I've never heard from them since. That was about 6 months ago.

ThreeLittleDots · 16/10/2019 17:01

They're perfectly safe, they don't use wifi, and Bulb have an installation program. We've just had ours put in by them.

Humberbear · 16/10/2019 17:02

I'm with octopus. They send me an email once a month to remind me to send my meter reading in and that is all contact I have. I pay £78 a month for a 4 bedroom house and am nearly £200 in credit.

FlyingFlamingo · 16/10/2019 17:04

Avoid Coop as well - I’ve just paid to come out of contract with them for this very reason! I’ve switched to PurePlanet and they’ve just emailed me about a smart meter as well so they had better not be about to start on with the same nonsense! Angry

poshme · 16/10/2019 17:04

I was about to recommend octopus too.
Eon are awful

Fookadook · 16/10/2019 17:10

I’m getting daily texts from Eon. Just fuck the fuck off. I need to change providers.

SynchroSwimmer · 16/10/2019 17:16

OP
You can’t have one - because “you have a heart pacemaker fitted” - haven’t you? 😉

( I believe smart meters might be risky with implanted electronics)

CAG12 · 16/10/2019 17:20

I use Bulb! Really good, I would highly recommend. Also you'd be doing your bit for the environment

Sistedtwister · 16/10/2019 17:21

Can't get signal in my house either. B Gas are insisting on checking again next week. I foresee the same conversation I had with them 3 years ago....
B Gas: we'll move the meter outside
Me: ok fill yet boots
B Gas: that'll be £xxx
Me: don't think so.
B Gas: you can't have a smart meter then
Me: annnndddd...??
B Gas: oh.

mencken · 16/10/2019 17:22

the energy companies get fined if they don't install this blind-alley tech. Smart meters aren't mandatory but the obvious thing has happened - the cheaper (slightly) tariffs all now insist you have them. Not clear what happens if when they install it, it doesn't work as many won't because mobile phone signal is by no means universal.

the smaller two-millenials-in-a-London-office don't yet mandate smart meters, but go bust quite often which is hassle and we all pay for it.

set up 'no crap comms' on your account. Block them on your phone (I believe mobiles can do that, for a landline just get a callblocker). Return post as 'unwanted junk return to sender'. File emails in spam. Done.

mencken · 16/10/2019 17:23

oh, and don't believe the Bulb greenwash either - do you REALLY think they can supply limitless people with useless windfarms and the small amount of solar that we have?

Sallyseagull · 16/10/2019 17:23

I dont understand why seeing a code to get credit and get someone else credit makes you staggy but each to their own.

I cant fault Bulb since moving to them, already cheaper than my previous supplier and in almost £300 in credit which will hopefully cover the colder months.

goodwinter · 16/10/2019 17:23

I'm really happy with Bulb. Found them helpful and transparent, the website is easy to deal with and your payment breakdown is really clear - easy to withdraw any credit you may have built up, or let it cover the more expensive winter months. Flexible monthly payments you can change whenever you want. Etc etc :)

AllFourOfThem · 16/10/2019 17:24

I would tell them you are opting out of all of their communications and if they contact you again about a smart meter, you will go to the Ombudsman.

Floopily · 16/10/2019 17:25

Another one recommending Octopus they are excellent and as a PP says the only emails I get are one to remind me to do my meter readings, and another to tell me my dd is about to be taken. I've also reduced my bills and am in credit! I can send you a referral link if you're interested in switching and we both get a £50 credit.

That said we were with e.on before this and I dobt think they ever called or texted me!

Saucery · 16/10/2019 17:26

Yes, customer service person from Eon was apologetic that they have to contact you every three months when I spoke to them on the phone about it.
The meter reader mentioned a Smart Meter too. The slightly sinister way I reeled off ‘Dangerous, cause fires, hazard to pacemakers, unnecessary snooping on user habits’ made him back off pretty sharpish though. Grin
They have to ask. I don’t have to have one, despite the letters implying it’s the Law Hmm
