To be tired of the ‘racist UK’ remarks?

By that I mean people talking down the UK and say that it’s a racist country since Brexit. I appreciate everyone has their own experiences but I dislike when people say Brexit has made the UK more racist and make out it is more so than its EU counterparts when I, as a non white person, feel WAY more safe anywhere in the UK as I would compared to any other country in Europe. Can’t help but feel that the people that denigrate the UK for racism because of Brexit are white and have not visited countries in Europe as, or with, a person that isn’t white. Started this thread mostly because of the ‘shock’ about the racism that Bulgarian fans displayed to England and my first thought was ‘And this is a surprise, because...?’

i thought you were referring me back to your original post which is why i bothered to read it again.
i thought it was right anyway.
sorry for upset/annoyance.

RitaIsMyHero · 17/10/2019 14:59

@helmetbymidnight

Implying that I’m defending or minimising racism causes more than upset / annoyance.

Helmetbymidnight · 17/10/2019 15:07

ok, pls stop @ ing me now.

cheers.

RitaIsMyHero · 17/10/2019 15:13

You went out of your way to misquote me and twist my words, deliberately causing offence. Why bother?

angell84 · 17/10/2019 15:16

Do you think if people saw the real impact of racism they would stop?

For example , I know of a family - husband from UK, wife from EU.

And she has gone back to her EU country and taken the children with her , because she could not stand the racism here any longer. Husband has to stay here right now.

That family is split up, and in different countries, purely due to racism

angell84 · 17/10/2019 15:18

I think that we should have lessons against racism in schools

LannisterLion1 · 17/10/2019 15:26

I think racists now feel it's ok now to share their bile. A couple of relatives are racist. PreBrexit they would have barely voiced a comment until in private with their family or friends. Now they confidently drop it into many conversations.

easyandy101 · 17/10/2019 15:43

I think this country has always been pretty racist, it's just that people manage to surround themselves with people that think like them and talk like them and rarely step outside that interaction

Most of my friends are white, and all of them are very opposed to racism. They would challenge it and call it out if they experienced it. It would be easy for me to think this is how it is

But then i could go for a walk with my partner in Croydon at midnight on a Friday and it's a different story. Groups of blokes coming right up to her face and calling her a paki, someone held her against the wall on the train and said she's Taliban, set upon by a group of teenage girls when we were walking home from a party...

We haven't noticed that the country is more racist since Brexit but then we didn't live under the impression it was fine before

easyandy101 · 17/10/2019 15:45

And people calling the uk racist are doubtless doing the same thing, looking at their own small sample to make that conclusion

CornishCreation · 17/10/2019 16:52

If you tell two teenagers they can't be together they'll try everything in their power to be together, likewise if you tell people they are not allowed to express an opinion or view they will do so extravagantly as it's rebellion and claiming back the power to think for themselves.
I believe this whole politically correct terminology is what's making things worse as people don't like being told they can't say/think/feel for themselves it's restrictive and people are becoming programmed robots walking on eggshells.
This is why people have such extreme reactions because they're forced to comply and don't want to.
Education is what's needed not forced conformance, starting with schools to create a new generation who won't grow up with such ignorance.

rainingallday · 17/10/2019 17:24

What a horrible thread this has turned into. Hmm

There's some disgusting anti-white/anti English comments on this thread. Hmm Being called thick, gammon, slow, racist, bigoted, hated allover the world and so on.... Fortunately a few of the nasty comments have been deleted.

Some posters need to get off the internet and take a good, long, hard in the mirror.

You should be ashamed of yourself. Hmm

Supreme irony at its finest. Accusing some people (particularly people who support Brexit) of being racist, and saying the UK is a racist country (you all say UK, but you mean ENGLAND.) And then absolutely slaughtering English people/white people, and calling them all manner of nasty names.

Another thing that boils my piss is the suggestion that racists and bigots are only white and middle aged (or older!) I have met plenty of racist/bigoted young people (under 35,) AND plenty of racists who are not white. It's not just bloody white middle aged (and older) people! Hmm

Indeed many middle aged and older people are welcoming and tolerant of anyone and everyone, and I am fucked off with this stupid idea that only middle aged (and older) white folk can be racist. It's rude and narrow-minded, and ignorant, and shows peoples lack of education.

It's so boring now, and the PC brigade) are so predictable, that it's almost funny.

Cementowl · 17/10/2019 18:02

People think legal immigration is racist. They don't understand that as a small country, we soon won't have enough space to house our own population. It's different for countries like the USA, but we are a small island! As a country, we should be more selective.

Iggly · 17/10/2019 18:04

Why should we be more selective? There’s no credible basis for what you’re saying. People who come over here, a lot actually tend to leave and go home at some point. It’s worth checking the research tbh

@Cementowl

Well said, I'm non white live in the UK and travel all across EU and America, seen far more out and out racism in many 'naice' areas of the EU, than I have here, the worst racism me and my friends of had has been in Scotland ffs and I come from a working class town that is deprived predominantly white working class area. It's quite funny watching the uneducated try and extrapolate personal anecdotes (sometimes not even their own) as data when it suits the narrative.

It's all too common on MN when these types of threads come up, a lot of middle class white women white-knighting. Notice the 'rise in hate crimes' isn't being pushed as heavily now that slippery slope has included trans activism, on MN it was implied it was just racism from white's

rainingallday · 17/10/2019 18:42

@justanotherlurker

Well exactly.

Replace 'English' and 'white' with 'foreign,' 'Muslim,' or 'black,' and much of the nasty vitriolic, spiteful, vile shit that's been said on here (about white, English folk) would be classed as hate speech, and would be deleted.

Seems to be OK somehow to attack white English folk.

One thing that made me roll my eyes, was a comment earlier in the thread, implying that the people posting to say they're mixed race, (or not originally from the UK,) and are saying that they've never received any hate, (and find white/English people very welcoming,) were probably not genuine.

Like they were 'racist, white people' posing as POC/immigrants.

Unbelievable!

Some people will spout any shit to try and prove their pathetic, weak points.

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 17/10/2019 18:51

you all say UK, but you mean ENGLAND

No I don’t

Fatshedra · 17/10/2019 18:52

Douglas Murray (author of the madness of crowds) says if everyone put as much effort into kindness and compassion as they do into anti or pro racist/trans/mysoginy/ extinction revolution/ saving Romanian stray dogs / men/ me too/ lefty/ conservative/ labour/ semitic/ muslim etc etc etc we would have a very caring world!! Or words to that effect

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 17/10/2019 19:12

I agree that Brexit hasn’t made people more racist but it has allowed people to feel they have had their beliefs validated and have become more vocal

I don’t think the UK is as racist as many countries in Europe but that’s from the experience of family and friends - the worse was in France towards my ex (he was from North Africa) it was shocking and Italy he wouldn’t go back it was so awful

Livelovebehappy · 17/10/2019 19:46

Racial tensions and racist behaviour in London?? Find that hard to understand unless it’s between non white races/cultures. When I visited recently its very diverse and multi cultural.

🤦🏻‍♀️

London is a big place with a lot of inequality = high chance of racism.

BertrandRussell · 18/10/2019 07:44

@ Livelovebehappy

Which bits of London did you visit?

SleepOhHowIMissYou · 18/10/2019 08:05

@Angelll84. Most of the world dislike the English and think we are "Rude
Arrogant
Racist
Thinking you are better than all other races
Cruel
Nasty"

And right there is a fine example of racism.

Take out "English" in the opening paragraph and swap with any nationality of your choosing. Ask yourself if you would still be happy posting this comment now.

Maybe you need to address your own racism first?

SimonJT · 18/10/2019 08:50

@Livelovebehappy I live in Shoreditch, I’m often subjected to verbal racism.

ColaFreezePop · 18/10/2019 09:08

@CornishCorrection political correctness fundamentally means you should behaviour with good manners to other people.

You would be cross or even angry and upset if every time you posted something on here if I answered you then referred to you as that pasty eater. And I wouldn't because it is rude.

So why do you think it is OK to defend those referring to people using racist slurs and telling them to "Go back to where they come from"? That's what your post seems to do.
