To be tired of the ‘racist UK’ remarks?

By that I mean people talking down the UK and say that it’s a racist country since Brexit. I appreciate everyone has their own experiences but I dislike when people say Brexit has made the UK more racist and make out it is more so than its EU counterparts when I, as a non white person, feel WAY more safe anywhere in the UK as I would compared to any other country in Europe. Can’t help but feel that the people that denigrate the UK for racism because of Brexit are white and have not visited countries in Europe as, or with, a person that isn’t white. Started this thread mostly because of the ‘shock’ about the racism that Bulgarian fans displayed to England and my first thought was ‘And this is a surprise, because...?’

Racism as in beating people up is low in the UK

The following article begs to differ.

Oh sorry, didn't meet the strict definition of having to be physically assaulting people for it to 'count'.

OnTopOfTheWardrobe · 16/10/2019 16:12

Brexit hasn't made the UK more racist.
What it has done is made people more comfortable and open in spreading their bile-filled crap

This. After the Vote, people were emboldened. They felt more able to speak their mind believing that 52% of people agreed with them.

I know this is true. My EU co-workers have faced an increase in abuse. Many have already gone back to their country of birth. And we are all poorer for that.

OnTopOfTheWardrobe · 16/10/2019 16:17

I definitely makes me racist to suggest the hijab should be banned. I wouldnt even have considered it an important issue 10 years ago. But it is evidence of the rise of racism in this country

Do you think the hijab should be banned? Do you know what the hijab actually is? It is not a full face covering, and therefore there is no reason to ban it. Many people confuse it with the Niqab or Burkha which are full facial coverings and the kind that are banned in some European countries.

Mordred · 16/10/2019 16:19

I agree with some of the pp here - Brexit gave the green light for people to be vocal about their dislike of foreigners.

DW moved here from Poland in the mid 90s to be with me after we met on holiday. She became a British citizen in 2000. All of this years before Poland even joined the EU.

Prior to the Brexit vote, she had no problems here at all. Since the referendum, though, she's been called 'a fucking Polish bitch who should fuck off back to her own fucking country' several times. Once by a bloke who lives across the street from us.

My husband and I are white English, so have no personal experience, but this afternoon, his Albanian barber was telling him that he's having a lot of problems at home with racist youths, and it has only happened since Brexit. He lives in Portsmouth.

VolcanionSteamArtillery · 16/10/2019 16:27

Yes very much so. All three are very visual symbols of female oppression and culturally supported male supremacy. The only reason i wouldnt ban it because there would be a generation of women and girls who would probably end up further segregated and its kinda counter productive to say woman should be allowed to wear what they want but not a hijab, Niqab or Burkha.

But by gut feeling yes it should. Particularly in schools where i think religious segregation can be most challenged

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 16/10/2019 16:32

It's simply disingenuous to think that we'd be leaving the EU if freedom of movement wasn't a thing

WANTING CONTROLLED IMMIGRATION DOES NOT MEAN RACIST....omg!!!!!! this waters down real concerns of supply and demand with net migration figures, and in fact waters down real racism issues.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 16/10/2019 16:33

ColaFreezePop hasnt been asked in 21st Century London from a British person no.

HeyNotInMyName · 16/10/2019 16:33

What I am more amazed about is that people seem to be realising all that now.
All the stuff about the hostile environment, treating people, foreigners, like shit has been going on for years, before brexit started.
And few people ever said they’ve had an issue with it. The ‘immigration centres’ where access to lawyers is limited, the abus in those centres, children who are been help there. All that is not new.

So saying ‘Brexit made people more confortable about saying those racist, hate filled things’ is still missing the point that it was always there, staring you in the face but never addressed

OhSpaceboy · 16/10/2019 16:36

Since brexit I know of a Muslim woman that has been spat at and told to go home, she was with her child who was in a pushchair.

My black/mixed friends have told me they have experienced racism since the leave vote.

OnTopOfTheWardrobe · 16/10/2019 16:48

I am willing to accept that many leave voters who want controlled immigration are not anti-immigration in itself.
But a significant portion of the leave vote was plain racist (obviously NOT ALL LEAVE VOTERS ETC before I get attacked).

NarcolepticOuchMouse · 16/10/2019 16:49

It's certainly gotten worse for us. My partner is mixed race and I'm white. People seem to hate black man & white woman relationships and since the referendum more people feel free to tell me! The sad melts that voted for Brexit to appease their racist views seemingly think now a large portion of the population share their views and so it's acceptable to voice in public.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 16/10/2019 16:51

The problem is we ended up at Brexit because the establishment (the UK government and the EU) didnt listen to genuine concerns on freedom of movement and washed over them by calling people Racist.
There are racist people throughout society on the left as well as the right.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 16/10/2019 16:52

My black/mixed friends have told me they have experienced racism since the leave vote

many of my black/mixed friends have experienced racism from Europeans who moved to the UK, hence they voted Brexit. It works both ways.

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 16/10/2019 16:57

How can you say the majority of the people in the UK are racist

I think you’ll find that i said that the UK is a racist country

The people part was just in the middle of the quote i bolded

Having said that ...and this is my opinion so no evidence needed...i think that a lot of people are racist, they wouldnt do anything about it, they wouldnt discriminate or say anything to someones face but would comment to friends or people they think are ‘like’ them

Abraid2 · 16/10/2019 17:02

Do U.K people on here, know that U.K people are very, very disliked abroad?

Not all British people are very, very disliked everywhere. That’s simply not true. I travel quite a bit and haven’t felt disliked at all. I think people take you as they find you and if you’re polite, friendly and sensitive to local customs etc, and especially if you make an effort to speak the language, people will not have a problem with you.

nicky7654 · 16/10/2019 17:03

People who voted Brexit voted so the people could run their own Country. Have a look into how the EU runs and once your educated you will understand why. Racism has nothing to do with it. Just because you want a control on immigration does not make you Racist. All it means is UK is struggling already and more immigration puts more pressure on the whole of the Society, especially the Hospitals. The word Racism is used constantly by those who haven't a clue why it is being used.

Our parliament is, indeed, a shining example of how to run a country.

No your thick. As I said read up about the corrupt EU !! They have damaged Europe and will carry on doing so, cannot wait to be free from their control. If you use the word Racist make sure the other person is against a race first and not a Union!!! Idiot

typical brexiteer Grin

I know we can always do better but imo we are more tolerant than lots of other countries. DH has jewish relations that live/lived in France & many of them have left or are in the process of.

CrazyKyra · 16/10/2019 17:39

I'm mixed race, hubby is mixed Asian, but we're both English and voted leave 🤷 Maybe we're lucky but have not experienced any racism towards us so far, in both London and especially out of it. People out of London are so much nicer!

Back in the early 10's we frequently visited Italy and was constantly stared at 🤔
