Dead Silence

^Beware the stare of Mary Shaw
She had no children, only dolls
And if you see her in your dreams
Be sure to never, ever scream^

Unfortunately not on Netflix but well worth it. Even the thought of a few of the scenes terrify me out still.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 15/10/2019 22:07

Eden Lake is terrifying and more so because it could actually happen.

Pet Sematary

Trewser · 15/10/2019 22:08

Under the Shadow agree, thats great

House of the devil is really good, the 2009 one

expatinspain · 15/10/2019 22:09

I'm still waiting for a horror film that genuinely terrifies me. I must have a high threshold for scary films. The Haunting of Hill House was quite scary in parts.

Alicesweewonders · 15/10/2019 22:09

'It Follows' it's more psychological, freaked me out for age after.

Trewser · 15/10/2019 22:12

I thought the haunting of hill house was silly.

Melancholia was very disturbing but not traditional horror

quitecontrary123 · 15/10/2019 22:19

Creep - the woman trapped in the underground one that someone has already mentioned.

cushioncovers · 15/10/2019 22:21

The first Insidious film.

Eden lake I couldn't even finish watching it all.

28 weeks later

Woman in Black, so jumpy

CrowleysBentley · 15/10/2019 22:32

Is hereditary not supposed to be a comedy horror? Parts of it were properly ridiculous.

JoyceDivision · 15/10/2019 22:38

The Autopsy of Jane Doe - terrified me!

Haunting of Hill House - v scary in parts, v creepy and also extremely sad

dayslikethese1 · 15/10/2019 22:41

Last few years:
Cabin in the Woods
It Follows
Us
Get Out
Raw
Under the Shadow

Love old slashers like the Halloween franchise etc. as well, even the really bad ones. Also love the original Suspiria and other Argento films, they're proper bonkers.

Recently saw Crawl, that is a really fun monster movie (giant alligators)

dayslikethese1 · 15/10/2019 22:43

I think I've seen most of these films suggested but will take note of any I haven't Grin

penoversw0rd · 15/10/2019 22:46

Everything that's been said (The Babadook a million times over - it stayed with me for ages afterwards) but also Birdbox on Netflix if you haven't seen it. Absolutely stomach-churning.

StormyLovesOdd · 15/10/2019 23:03

I love a good horror The Autopsy of Jane Doe is my favourite recent horror or if you want to go old school The Thing (original remastered version) still makes me jump

pinkprosseco · 15/10/2019 23:04

Ginqueen20 · 15/10/2019 23:28

Paranormal activity

Jeepers creepers
Blair witch project
The village

Creep
Signs

ClaudiaSchiffersUglySister · 15/10/2019 23:37

My favourite is An American Werewolf in London. It’s great, it’s super gory/scary but funny too.

Also, get stuck into Stranger Things (there are 3 series on Netflix). It’s absolutely brilliant. Set in the ‘80s, so loads of nostalgia, with characters and relationships you’ll care about. And monsters from the upside down!

JustaScratcj · 15/10/2019 23:38

It Follows was good and quite unusual.

The Descent is an all time fave.

Hush - home invasion with a difference.

Icecreambaby · 15/10/2019 23:40

My top 3:

Omen
Poltergeist
Exorcist

GlitteryUnicornSparkles · 16/10/2019 00:08

I have a pretty high tolerence when it comes to horror, however I’ve always had a pretty severe phobia of mirrors so the Candyman did me in.

Insidious is also very good (the first one) and the Blair Witch Project.

I really enjoy the older horror films such as Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street and IT etc. but don’t think they are particularly scary.

Fuma · 16/10/2019 00:24

Yeah I like the old 80s ones because they're quite slick and enjoyable but I wouldn't say they scare me as such. I agree with @wifesupremacist that in some quarters horror has become a lot richer more thought provoking and more nuanced in recent years, probably in reaction to the torture porn genre, although there's still a lot of shit effects and cheap scares. Having said that even during the time that things like hostel were top billing there were always films with thoughtful clever hooks like jeepers creepers.

Fuma · 16/10/2019 00:42

Oh and in that vein of more emotionally resonant films in addition to others mentioned here I can recommend it comes at night which is more post apocalyptic but has strong elements of horror and is very powerful.

NaviSprite · 16/10/2019 00:57

Japanese originals of the Grudge and Grudge 2
Japanese originals of The Ring Trilogy
Let the Right one In
The Exorcist (classic!)
The Babadook
Halloween
Candyman
La Llorona
The Mist (2007 movie version)

Horror movies I like but don't find particularly scary:

Drag me to Hell (I actually find this one pretty funny)
Childs Play 1 & 2
Leprechaun
The Thing

Potnoodledoo · 16/10/2019 06:33

Wrong Turn is such a great film.
Exorcism of Emily Rose.
The Woman in Black

I didnt like Creep[underground one],The Visit or House on Haunted Hill.I thought they where a huge letdown.

fantasmasgoria1 · 16/10/2019 06:39

People are people, are you a Depeche mode fan? Most of the films listed I really don't actually find scary! I jump sometimes but I don't sit there and think this is a scary film! I sometimes imagine how I would feel if this was in real life and that it would be scary then!
