Midsommer was one the best films I've ever seen.

afrikat · 15/10/2019 20:08

For me, scariness often depends on the atmosphere I watch things. If it's dark and I am with similar minded people (and we are all winding each other up) movies can be utterly terrifying but had I watched it in a different environment they may not have been. The ones that stand out to me in my memory (due to the atmosphere and how much they scared me at the time) are

Candyman
Ringu
The Eye (original)
Dark Water (original)
Paranormal Activity
Sinister
Rec
A Quiet Place
Hereditary
The Orphanage

Horror films which didnt necessarily scare me but which I love are:

The Cabin in the Woods
Scream
Severance
Halloween
The Thing
A Nightmare on Elm Street
Shaun of the Dead
Dawn of the Dead (remake)

Not scary in a paranormal way but horrific and it stays with you; The Poughkeepsie Tapes (about a serial killer). I thought it was really well made and terrifying.

foodname · 15/10/2019 20:12

Not a film but Haunting of Hill House (is that the right title?!) the Netflix series, brought back my love of horror.

afrikat · 15/10/2019 20:16

Agree with the Haunting of Hill House. So beautifully made. Scary and sad. Fab show

JaimeBronde · 15/10/2019 20:21

The Fog (original) absolutely terrifies the life out of me. The music, the misty figures coming out of the rolling fog, the way they move & those glowing red eyes.
I've only once managed to watch the whole thing once (half behind a cushion) with DH next to me. It unsettled me for days.
Yet films like The Shining, Blair Witch Project, The Ring don't bother me. I found the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre rather silly.
The Hitchcock horror films such as The Birds & Psycho unnerve me a little due to the film lighting, music & the underlying stillness/ordinariness yet detailed atmosphere. Classic Hitchcock.

Pineapplemintandstrawberrysage · 15/10/2019 20:27

I used to love scary movies, there used to be funny factor to them in the past. Since I watched saw and hostel, I don't find it funny anymore. Too realistic and to gory.
What I find really scary is the psychological horror films, something like Shining. The Ring, original novel was really scary, but film wasn't a match at all.

sallyedmondson · 15/10/2019 20:28

A Quiet Place
Petrifying and heart breaking at the same time.

foodname · 15/10/2019 20:30

@sallyedmondson loved Quiet Place, even my husband did and he hates horror films.

Pineapplemintandstrawberrysage · 15/10/2019 20:34

A Lonely Place to Die and Never Let Me Go.

EmmiJay · 15/10/2019 20:35

Rec 2 the original one with subtitles
Hereditary
Entity
Evil Dead newest one
Exorcist 3
The Core
(A mix of horror, scifi, paranormal etc)

Greenglassteacup · 15/10/2019 20:43

Carnival of souls

Ginger1982 · 15/10/2019 20:48

Wolf Creek. I had nightmares about the hat for ages!
Wolf Creek 2 on the other hand is a nonsensical gorefest 🤮

PrincessHoneysuckle · 15/10/2019 20:58

Saw

PrincessHoneysuckle · 15/10/2019 20:59

And wolf creek

LittleSweet · 15/10/2019 21:05

Ring
The Grudge
The Conjuring 1
The Shining
I like the original Poltergeist. The special effects are dated, but it has a much more logical and believable story. Also some of it is left to the viewer's imagination. Much more effective than the screen writer/director's imagination, in the remake, which disappointed me.

LittleSweet · 15/10/2019 21:06

How did I forget Paranormal Activity 1&2?

Bipbopbee · 15/10/2019 21:13

Dark Skies. Very very creepy film about alien abduction.

Insidious.

The Orphanage

The Others

Signs

Oh dear Eden Lake is on Amazon Prime. Is it a bad idea to watch before bed? Fuck it.

Just realised I totally missed Midsommar when it was at the cinema - really annoyed as it looked so interesting. Did anyone catch it and care to share if it's a gooden?

wifesupremacist · 15/10/2019 21:16

There's been a real resurgence recently of proper horror with actual atmospheres rather than torture porn (like saw or hostel) or jumpscare-fests (eg insidious or paranormal activity). It Follows, The Babadook, The VVitch, Mother!, Hereditary, Midsommar, Get Out, Us. a little bit further back but Under The Skin both terrified and upset me, still haven't watched it again since (the bit with the baby on the beach made me want to die)

But there's obviously still a place for fun bloody horror, can't go wrong with Drag Me To Hell or The Descent (probably the best British horror film, that or 28 Days Later)

AFairlyHardAvocado · 15/10/2019 21:18

I've reconsidered after reading more of your posts I'm not doing Eden Lake before bed after all 😂

Thefemalekeithrichards · 15/10/2019 21:20

Suspiria
The original 1977 version (don’t have the nerve to watch the remake) 🥺

OldAndWornOut · 15/10/2019 21:22

The Grudge,
My Little Eye,
Hostel 2

Hushabyelullaby · 15/10/2019 21:58

@humanfemale it's on channel 4 on Saturday and I've been wanting to watch it for ages so am looking forward to it

Cantsleeppast3am · 15/10/2019 22:03

Eden lake for me too and the strangers? I think with liv Tyler?
That was out around the same time and was absolutely terrifying.
