Kids of famous people saying they are famous in their own right!

It really drives me mad. You are obviously mainly famous or successful because of connections. I know some are them are talented but surely connections of parents help. David Hasslehoff's daughter has said it. Kelly Osborne, Lilly Allen and loads more.

Some celebrity parents try to protect their kids, others exploit them. I'm not criticising people for giving their kids a leg up as long as the kid is actually talented. Stella McCartney is the best example ... daddy meant going to fashion school didn't involve debt, it meant she didn't have to work in a shop whilst trying to make her own collection or working for high street store in the design dept, but if no one liked her designs she would not have sold her clothes (and it was pre internet influencers!) she, and her siblings actually all have careers because of talent.

Worst example Brooklyn beckham!

BlackCatSleeping · 14/10/2019 03:11

One is example is Mick Schumacher. He’s been racing since he was a kid and obviously has the time and resources to motor race, but if he didn’t win races, then he’d be dropped. It doesn’t matter who his dad is.

Modeling is not about being the prettiest or tallest or most beautiful. It’s about making money. If a fashion brand hires a celeb kid to walk their runway, then they will probably get a lot of extra press for that and extra press means extra sales. If they don’t get a bump in sales though the celeb kid will be dropped. I read that having Romeo Beckham front the Burberry campaign resulted in around 15% boost in sales. That’s huge! They don’t care what he looks like, they care that he made them a huge amount of money.

I remember reading that the owner of Chloe was thrilled about having a Beatle on his front row when he hired Stella. She may have got where she did through nepotism but I think she remained there through her own hard work. I loved Meghan Markle’s going away dress that she designed.

2.Lily Collins, gets jobs because she is a a talented actress.

Many many actors and actresses are talented though, and yet they have to earn a living by waiting tables or driving delivery vans. That's because acting is a career where supply massively exceeds demand and most people are un- or underemployed, even if talented.

So while Lily may be talented - I've not seen her in anything - there's no way that being the daughter of a very famous man wasn't a enormous advantage for her.

joyfullittlehippo I’m guessing Emilia Fox in P&P?

IcedPurple · 14/10/2019 08:56

Yes, I guess it's related to the discussion about how so many actorswent to private schols - particulalry ultra-elite schools like Harrow and Eton - even though only 7% of the general population is privately educated.

ssd · 14/10/2019 08:57

I thought Emilia Fox too.

isabellerossignol · 14/10/2019 09:09

I think the other thing about acting is that people who have had success in that industry themselves would presumably be far more likely to see it as something to pursue, so it's self fulfilling in that way.

I would never have been allowed to do drama as a child, much less attempt to make a career of it.

RuffleCrow · 14/10/2019 09:13

Off topic but did anyone else assume Lily James was Alex James' daughter at first? They look so similar!

Iamthewombat · 14/10/2019 09:17

I’m with @IcedPurple on this: loads of people could do a good job in acting or TV/radio presenting roles. Kids with connections (Lily Collins, Emilia Fox via both her parents - her mother had already been cast in P&P as Mrs Gardiner - Roman Kemp, Zoe Ball’s son, Jude Law’s son etc etc) get the chances. The others don’t.

I bet that there are tens of thousands of young people who would make fantastic DJs. I’m not a great fan of YouTube ‘influencers’ - lots of them seem like real mediocrities- but you can see why people try it when the good TV, radio and acting roles are allocated by nepotism!

MockersthefeMANist · 14/10/2019 09:18

Cucumber Sandwich says he's discriminated against for being posh.

AdobeWanKenobi · 14/10/2019 09:22

Max Verstappen has easily eclipsed his father Jos in formula 1.
He’ll have had a fabulous start but as was said above if you’re not winning races you don’t get team seats.

Quite a few famous sons have come through F1 over the years but few have equalled or surpassed their parent.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 14/10/2019 09:23

It’s also about not really needing to work so they can take a risk on a more precarious career. I suspect that the private school actors and children of the famous don’t need to take the crappy jobs to make ends meet.

Harold Wilson’s eldest son, Robin, was embarrassed about his Dad having been PM. He became a Maths Professor.

Stop it! You're breaking my heart!

I remember seeing something on telly about Victoria Sellers (daughter of peter sellers and Britt Eckland)
She was finding things v tough and actually said something like “I don’t have my mother’s looks or my fathers talent”. Iirc she had given comedy a go and fallen flat on her arse, and of course there was this expectation.. V sad.

IcedPurple · 14/10/2019 09:49

It is sad. But at least she had the chance to pursure her chosen career. The children of less famous people won't have this opportunity at all.

Iamthewombat · 14/10/2019 09:49

Victoria Sellers did more than attempt a comedy career! She was one of Heidi Fleiss’s girls (if you’re not old enough to remember the 1990s, Heidi Fleiss was the Hollywood madam arrested for supplying prostitutes to rich men, including actors).

I don’t think her famous parents helped her into that career, but you never know, do you?

bibliomania · 14/10/2019 09:57

I thought Jaden Smith was brilliant in the remake of Karate Kid.

Iamthewombat · 14/10/2019 10:01

Maybe he was, I haven’t seen it, but how many more young actors would have been equally, or more, brilliant? Thousands, I imagine. Another example of greedy, selfish people keeping all the best things for themselves (I notice that Will Smith and his wife, like the Beckhams, were keen to shove their kids in front of the camera as soon as they could).

Whattodoabout · 14/10/2019 10:04

Some of them do grow up to be more famous than their parents which is kinda awkward. The Kardashians and Lily Allen are examples of that.

edgeofheaven · 14/10/2019 10:09

I think Robert Kardashian was more infamous...having been OJ Simpsons defense lawyer. His children's legacy at least isn't tainted with the failures of the American justice system.

Iamthewombat · 14/10/2019 10:23

For whom is it awkward? Neither side, I imagine: I don’t think there will be many examples of the children of influential parents making it on their own without direct or indirect help from their parents or their parents’ contacts. I expect the parents and the kids are equally pleased with themselves for having pushed everybody else out!

Temeraire · 14/10/2019 10:58

Benedict Cumberbatch’s parents seemed entirely happy picking up bit-part work playing his parents in Sherlock. Not awkward at all.
