It really drives me mad. You are obviously mainly famous or successful because of connections. I know some are them are talented but surely connections of parents help. David Hasslehoff's daughter has said it. Kelly Osborne, Lilly Allen and loads more.

Here's the article I read about Roman Farrow.

variety.com/2018/biz/news/ronan-farrow-harvey-weinstein-new-yorker-sexual-assault-1202971197/

BlackCatSleeping · 15/10/2019 02:17

Sorry, Ronan

TheSandman · 15/10/2019 02:19

There's nothing really new in this: Charlie Chaplin's daughter Geraldine had a Hollywood career, Four of John Carradine's sons became actors, Lon Chayney Jr. probably made more movies than his dad etc. etc.

Getting pissed of about this sort of thing is as pointless as getting pissed off that farmers tend to be the sons and daughters of farmers.

Iamthewombat · 15/10/2019 07:13

Tell me, would you be annoyed if your son or daughter went to drama school, really wanted to act, was good but couldn’t get a foot in the door because the roles were going to young people with connections?

I’m not in that situation, but I would be annoyed on their behalf. In fact, if I had a kid who wanted to act I’d advise them not to attempt it as a career because they would never make a living and would be disadvantaged long term. I doubt that applies to Emilia Fox, her brother, Jude Law’s kids, Benedict Cumberbatch or even Gaynor Faye (agree, would she ever have got near TV without her mother leaning on casting directors?)

Iamthewombat · 15/10/2019 07:14

I have a Victoria Beckham dress (from her diffusion line). I can’t stand her but that doesn’t trouble me, because I know that she had no involvement in designing the frock.

Brooklyn beckham is surprisingly humble in real life, easily embarrassed, he’s ok.
He’s been to a lot of local schools in nw London and many kids say he’s really ok

If this is true then it's a shame his parents keep trying to push him into the limelight (like they seem to be doing with all their kids). They aren't helping him one bit because he's a completely average kid in ever respect ( and there's nothing wrong with that).

BobbyNewport · 15/10/2019 07:30

Bold fail, there.

MarshaBradyo · 15/10/2019 07:55

It might be a family tradition but that didn’t have much impact on others back then.

Now someone like Kaia or Hadids will get a large chunk of contracts for campaigns. They are launched really hit the market.

Kaia obvs appeals to many and is an influence. But still, makes it harder.

As a child of the 80s I mourn the loss of proper super models.

We're crowded out by a crop of merely attractive youngsters that would have been catalogue models 20 years ago.

sashh · 15/10/2019 08:13

Surely the ultimate example is the Monarchy? I mean, Charles seems fairly average but he's going to get to be head of state just because of his mum.

On the other hand Princess Anne and Zara Phillips might have had a start, enough money to buy horses and from a family where most people ride, but both competed in the Olympics so they must have ability.

I think there is a huge difference between having a step up due to your parents and making a living just from your name. Eg Chloe Madeley - why is she famous?

Oh and for those who asked, Lily Allen's dad is Keith, as in the sheriff of nottingham, her mum is Alison Owen, a film director.

@Sobeyondthehills

"I watched celebrity x factor last night and I felt so sorry for Hayley Hasselhoff.
Simon Cowell banging on about her Dad and she was there just to sing on her own merit."

When we were shown the contenders introducing themselves she told us her name, age, the fact that she became a model at 14 and then said "my father's David Hasselhoff who is an actor and singer and all around big old personality."
Why mention it at all?

She then came out and the conversation went:
Hayley: "Hey everyone".
Simon: "Hi. How are you?"
Hayley: "I"m good. How are you"? (Said with familiarity).
Simon: "Do we know each other?"
Hayley: "Erm, I'm Hayley Hasselhoff. I've met YOU before, Simon. Hey Randy".

Simon only recognised the Hasselhoff name. He clearly didn't know her. He'd met her many years before. She was probably a child. He then politely asked how her dad was. She is the one preying on the name and singing with a really rubbish voice.

Iamthewombat · 15/10/2019 09:00

I wouldn’t feel too sorry for Rafferty Law (Jude Law’s son). Sadie Frost was interviewed in a puff piece in Metro last week and spent a significant amount of it banging on about his career and how she could exclusively reveal that he’d just ‘landed the lead role in a film’ but ‘it’s not out there yet’.

Out there? How is this exclusive, exciting news? It’s not like Prince Charles divorcing Camilla to marry Colleen Rooney is it? (If only!)

So if his mother is acting as his publicist, I assume with his consent, he doesn’t require much sympathy from us. As a poster noted upthread, he probably doesn’t fancy being plain old Joe Soap. If you read Vogue, or Tatler or even Hello! Fashion Monthly you’ll see that there are loads of parties in London to launch shops, or perfume, or designer collaborations. All stuffed with liggers and D listers. If you were brought up to that life, maybe you’d prefer that over stepping into the unknown and being normal!

Somebody needs to make this happen.

MarshaBradyo · 15/10/2019 09:13

Sadie Frost is old school hanger oner there’s a few of them in that group

Iamthewombat · 15/10/2019 09:35

In the same interview she quickly glossed over the demise of her old Frost French fashion business (which as far as I can see has only been an endorsement of Debenhams knickers for the past 10+ years). She is now also a ‘film maker’, she says.

I’m glad I’m not in that position: struggling to stay relevant in order to cling on to my position on the D list with the Love Island contestants.

MarshaBradyo · 15/10/2019 09:41

Being friends with Kate Moss has taken her far. Weirdly she popped up on my IG feed the other day in some KM video and I thought she must be promoting something.

The thing that confuses me about VB is, why did she even join the Spice Girls in the first place if fashion is what she really wants to do? And what makes her think being in the Spice Girls and liking clothes qualifies her as a fashion designer?

Glamour gave her the Entrepreneur of the Year Award once and I thought that was ridiculous. Why not give it to someone who is a genuine businessperson and isn't riding on the back of a pop career and famous husband?

carbuncleonapigsposterior · 15/10/2019 10:40

I don't think the lightweights such as Brooklyn Beckham and Rafferty Law, who in spite of expensive private education amount to what exactly?, can be compared to Ronan Farrow who has very impressive academic qualifications such as a law degree from Yale. My impression is that he would be a successful journalist/writer without the dubious connection of being Woody Allen's son. I think Duncan Jones is another who is a successful person in his own right. I believe he immersed himself in accademia before he emerged as a film director and didn't trade on the "Bowie" name using his father's birth name of Jones. Stella McCartney, unlike VB, did study fashion at St Martin's, although I imagine the McCartney connection helped but at least she has bona fide credentials and didn't turn to fashion designing because she was a bit bored and quite rightly she is circumspect about her children and their lives.

MarvellousMayhem · 15/10/2019 10:40

I think people are being quite mean about some of the model kids! Fashion changes they have the look that is now. Maybe we are out of date? Or behind the times with beauty standards?
I don’t get the thick contoured eyebrows at the moment or when pencil thin eyebrows were in.

Still. YANBU OP these offspring will most likely have benefited from nepotism and not know what struggling really is!

TheSandman · 15/10/2019 11:09

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been in a rehearsal room and realised I’m the only one in the room who didn’t either grow up with industry connections or go to public school. Why should I not be pissed off about that?

I expressed myself badly. It is only human nature to be pissed off in that situation but ultimately pointless. All you are going to do is make yourself unhappy. Just like being pissed off that the sun comes up in the morning when you want a lie in. You can get pissed off, but it's not going to change anything. I suppose as an actor you could channel that pissed-offness into your performance.

When I was at college (same discipline as my mother and father as it happens) I knew someone who was the daughter of a well kent play-write and a recognisable face-from-the telly actor. She was at drama school. After college I lost track of her (not that we were really that close). A couple of years later she turned up on Coronation Street for a few episodes and then was spotted doing something happy clappy woooo! on preschool kids TV (it worked for Jeremy Irons) then - Pfut! no idea where she is or what she's doing now. I hope she's happy but she's not famous.

MarshaBradyo · 15/10/2019 11:16

It’s a shame if the main criteria is children of. It’s not yet, we’ll I don’t know, but if that was all it took we’d miss out on better talent.
