As in people in places such as Richmond, Kingston (insisting they live in Surrey) or places such as Bromley (insisting they are in Kent).

These places may used to have in a different county but have been part of greater London and a London Borough since 1965.

Is is snobbery? They usually drone only about postal towns which also no longer exist.

My Dd at university is bemused by the number of people she meets who claim they’re from London, and when she asks where, it’s some place she’s never heard of in the Home Counties. We live in zone 2. To me too, London is much more desirable than Surrey or wherever.

MockersthefeMANist · 07/10/2019 19:34

Historically, all 32 boroughs were part of Surrey, Kent, Essex or Middlesex. London County was created in the 1880s, the GLC in 1965.

TheStaff · 07/10/2019 19:36

I was born and bred in Richmond. Moved away to university. If anyone ever enquires where I'm from, I say London, I'm a Londoner......south west.....any further probing, I'd say the posh/expensive part - that's why I moved away. I don't mention Surrey at all.

MiddleClassProblem · 07/10/2019 19:44

Not all TW are part of London. Surrey takes care of my TW even though we’re inside the m25

I tried searching to see if I could find out when counties were removed from official addresses. I found this from 2010. It explained that automated sorting systems meant that all mail was sorted by postcode from 1996 but that some people chose to continue to use them. The chairperson of the board advising the Royal Mail described including the county as a ‘vanity attachment’ Grin

@MiddleClassProblem but here's the actual address for that postcode. The one you posted is not the official one. No Surrey in sight.

"London borough of Richmond website proving its Surrey. Also it was my address for 21 years."

That's just some addresses that people have typed in to advertise things, it doesn't prove anything. As various people have pointed out according to the Post Office those addresses aren't even the right addresses, the right addresses don't mention Counties.

When it comes to the Council's own addresses the Council is much more precise:
"Civic Centre, 44 York Street, Twickenham, TW1 3BZ"

No mention of Surrey, as is completely correct. I'd expect their financial teams to be as equally prudent and precise should any of those businesses claim that they actually are in Surrey and not in London when it comes to the payment of their taxes.

"It’s part of a weird Venn diagram part of Greater London and Surrey"

You could represent it as Venn diagram. One circle would be "Greater London", the other would be "Surrey". The two circles would not overlap and Richmond would be firmly in the "Greater London" circle and not the "Surrey" one.

MiddleClassProblem · 07/10/2019 20:34

@DappledThings
As I showed before, Royal Mail don’t put counties on the address no matter where it is. Look up a postcode from a random country and it will be the same.

Arnoldthecat · 07/10/2019 20:36

Digressing slightly but in a similar vein,,those who append the word village" to the end of the area they live when really it isnt a village, its a suburb or subdistrict of a major town or city. Villages are often esate agent constructs.

We need one of these. I might see if there's a spare knocking around at work. I could peruse it for hours...

I used to live in Crystal Palace which I think we can all agree is in London: border of LB Lambeth and LB Lewisham but actually in LB Bromley. No way was I living in Kent.

I know, I've been saying the same. I don't really care about the what's London or not debate. I just get annoyed about counties in addresses. But some random website using Surrey proves nothing.

Millymollymandybestie · 07/10/2019 20:38

I think it can be very confusing when you right in the border to say where you are from and different circumstances you say different things- my postcode is for one area I lay council tax to another yet my dialling code is another’s and doesn’t match where we pay council tax or postcode. Also what about other area - Manchester/Cheshire ?

DappledThings · 07/10/2019 20:38

So did I! SE postcode but in Croydon borough. Definitely London.

Ilnome · 07/10/2019 20:40

I grew up in redbridge/ilford - which is a london Borough but in an area that was previously part of essex. Everyone from there sounds like they are from essex, and lots of people would call it essex even though it is greater london on a technicality. Usually who ever picks your rubbish up is both you council and the are you live it (if redbridge is written on your rubbish bin collector then you are from redbridge. But the school at the end of my road and the gp clinic round the corner (literally one street away) are both under the control of essex county council

Malvinaa81 · 07/10/2019 20:43

London is a London postcode.

Most people don't talk about living in a Borough anyway.

RuffleCrow · 07/10/2019 20:50

YABVU. Firstly they are part of said county, right down to the postcode and often at county council level too (i'm not thinking of the places you've named - more those heading the other way in Essex). Secondly they often have more in common with said county than London as a whole. I went to school in Redbridge and as far as we were concerned, as locals, Essex started with the RM and IG postcodes. End of.

I suspect that the locals who thought that didn't cling onto that notion when it came to paying their council tax. The London Borough of Redbridge certainly would have had differing opinions. As would the London Metropolitan Police who might have come around to arrest anyone who wouldn't pay London its money. I'm sure Essex County Council would have appreciated the extra money, but it really had nothing to do with them.

MiddleClassProblem · 07/10/2019 21:08

@DappledThings but if mines not proof, yours isn’t either because they never put the county.

Having said all of this I’ve always said I’m from London 😂

But my current TW address is definitely in Surrey and not Greater London... yet...

DappledThings · 07/10/2019 21:09

but if mines not proof, yours isn’t either because they never put the county

But I'm not trying to prove anything! Just pointing out counties are not part of addresses so the inclusion of one in an address is meaningless.

DappledThings · 07/10/2019 21:11

my current TW address is definitely in Surrey

But it isn't. No address is given as Surrey. Just TWICKENHAM, TWXX etc.

m0therofdragons · 07/10/2019 21:12

Huh? My granny lives in Surrey and it is part of the borough of London. It's still Surrey on maps - she's near Sutton. She lived there since 1960 so quit frankly, at 93, she can call it whatever the fuck she likes. I hate it when people say they live in London when they don't and then seem embarrassed because they assume living in the West Country I couldn't possibly know the difference Grin

MiddleClassProblem · 07/10/2019 21:13

@DappledThings
Lol yes but we are part of Surrey council. Had to apply through them for school preferences etc

DappledThings · 07/10/2019 21:18

You're definitely Surrey then! Where DH claims the sun always shines!

MiddleClassProblem · 07/10/2019 21:22

Oh, of course... presently raining. But that’s just to wash away the horse manure in the yard 🐴💁🏽‍♀️
