As in people in places such as Richmond, Kingston (insisting they live in Surrey) or places such as Bromley (insisting they are in Kent).

These places may used to have in a different county but have been part of greater London and a London Borough since 1965.

Is is snobbery? They usually drone only about postal towns which also no longer exist.

But equally when you drive down the A3 to the Bentall Centre, you're driving through the built-up area - Surrey doesn't really start until you get to the tree-lined roads beyond the Hook turn-off.

However if you walk to the south along the river from Bentalls, you will reach the Surrey border. You do not have to be particularly fit to do so! I think it is just over a mile.

Fairly recently the area I live was still classed as Middlesex, though it is undeniably inner London.

Is 1965, the date Middlesex ceased to exist, fairly recent?

CecilyP · 07/10/2019 10:49

If you get Christmas cards from people with the county on them do you get all grumpy and send it back to them with the country crossed out?

No but I think they have wasted their own time writing surplus information on the envelope. And if they send dozens of cards, that could amount to a lot of time.

bohemia14 · 07/10/2019 10:54

@Grumpyperson but that's got nothing to do with living in London or not, that's because it's a different Borough council. My brother is in the same situation - he lives in Bromley but his council is Lewisham, his flat is right on the edge of the Borough. He has no problems using things like the nearest tip (in Bromley) as he has one of my council tax letters to show if asked 😀 which is almost never.

Tojigornot · 07/10/2019 10:58

The Royal Mail address finder doesn’t include the county for any address. So it can’t be used to prove the argument one way or the other.

It would be like the OP claiming that I must live in London because the address finder doesn’t have Cornwall in it for my address.

Ginfordinner · 07/10/2019 11:07

I'm from Croydon, and still address Christmas cards to South Croydon, Surrey. I had no idea that this was wrong. All my relatives live in a postcode that starts CR which is why I don't really class Croydon as London, but as Greater London (and still Surrey) Grin

Spidey66 · 07/10/2019 11:11

The opposite thread was here a couple of years ago. Someone posted they were pissed off that people said they lived in London when they lived in Kent, Essex etc. They tried to convince us Stratford wasn't in London, but in Essex, despite it being a Zone 2 station.

BadgersPaws2 · 07/10/2019 11:23

"They tried to convince us Stratford wasn't in London, but in Essex, despite it being a Zone 2 station."

Stratford left Essex in the mid 1800s and it too joined London in the 1965 boundary changes. Curious again that few would argue that it's not London despite it joining at the same time as places like Bromley, Richmond and Upminster.

NetballHoop · 07/10/2019 11:27

@Parisa5 I have never understood Middlesex tbh, as it doesn’t even show on maps.

Here's a map of Middlesex. Though it is quite an old one and I suspect it won't help much as it includes all the West End and as far East as the Isle of dogs!

Hmm, the map didn't load. You can see it here though: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/59/Map_of_Middlesex.jpg

As long as you use the postcode, it isnt wrong, the Surrey part is just superfluous.

FuzzyPuffling · 07/10/2019 11:40

Recently I read an article about the "lowest crime areas in London" and Sevenoaks was one of them! Firmly in Kent by a lot of miles!

nettie434 · 07/10/2019 11:46

I’m with Badgerspaws2. If your council tax goes towards the Mayor of London and the Metropolitan Police, then you are in London, whatever your postcode.

Evilmorty · 07/10/2019 11:46

It’s so old that it shows Middlesex as one county when it is in fact now split in two in areas that are over an hours drive from each other. As I’ve said. More than once.

Evilmorty · 07/10/2019 11:48

This is now considered Middlesex (for postal reasons only) because as a county it doesn’t exist any more.

It was actually split 3 ways. Most of it to London boroughs, part to Surrey and part to Hertfordshire.

Evilmorty · 07/10/2019 11:56

It really is as simple as, does he GLC say your borough is London. Then it is.

Perhaps you live in an area which is “London Borough of” but you have a postcode that is not a pre1965 London code, (N/E/W/WC/S etc) well it still is london.

Only purists who cling to pre1965 boundaries say it isn’t London.

Evilmorty · 07/10/2019 12:02

CecilyP If you mean the Shepperton area portion as the third Surrey split, that is included in the two way split photo I posted.

If you mean the Enfield area portion as the Hertfordshire split, that is also included in the two way split I posted and it’s Enfield. Which is not in Hertfordshire. The Herts boundary is at Waltham cross.

PancakeAndKeith · 07/10/2019 12:07

On Saturday I am doing a race in Bournemouth. A Hampshire cross country race. As far as I know, Bournemouth hasn't been in Hampshire since before 1974.

I refuse to acknowledge Bournemouth as being in Dorset.

BowiesJumper · 07/10/2019 12:11

I don't know why this would annoy you... bizarre. There has also been a thread about this before, but the OP got annoyed that people said they lived in London, when they were "just in a London borough" (ie Kent/Surrey etc). Those from Croydon got a particular pasting I seem to remember. You can't win!
I live in the Twickenham area, so yes it is London, but has a TW postcode and Middlesex in the postal address (which obviously doesn't exist as a county anymore). I do say I live in London to those from outside the area that ask though, as it's easier...

DappledThings · 07/10/2019 12:12

but has... Middlesex in the postal address

No it doesn't!

ShivD · 07/10/2019 12:15

If you have TFL and vote for the London mayor then it’a London.

Rosehip10 · 07/10/2019 12:20

@evilmorty Middlesex no longer exists in a postal sense either.

Rosehip10 · 07/10/2019 12:22

@BowiesJumper postal counties no longer exist either. Abolished in 1996. Middlesex is not formally part of any address.
