... For doing this to a block of cheese Grin For some reason my DH gets really wound up when people (usually DD) grate the cheese from the 'wrong' end (ie, an end that isn't already grated). Earlier, I was grating cheese for tea and I had a lightbulb moment and grated every possible end, edge, side, corner and angle on the block of cheese Grin

My friend is horrified and thinks DH should divorce me for so much wrongness Grin

Obviously lighthearted

Those of you saying that you cut off a lump of cheese in order to grate it, how do you know the lump is going to be the right size? I find grated cheese volume doesn't correlate well to chunk of cheese volume. And I'd hate to grate too little cheese and then having to faff about slicing off another lump.

Aligm · 07/10/2019 20:08

What? Do you not cut off that you are going to grate and leave the edge lovely and smooth?Wink

ScrambledEggForBrains · 07/10/2019 20:08

😱 Noooooooooo

Chopping a bit off and then grating that is not what we do in this house. We have a few of those Ikea tub graters and we just grate a tub full of cheese when it gets empty. None of us like the ready grated stuff (bleurgh Envy ) so we do it like this. In the 9yrs we've been doing it like this, it's never been left long enough for it to go mouldy so touching it is not really an issue.

I was out climbing a slate mine, yesterday. This cheese resembles the damn rockface.

"how do you know the lump is going to be the right size?"

you cut off a piece of ample size.

I don't understand the concept of "too much" but if there is some left over you could give it to the cook's assistant.

purplebunny2012 · 07/10/2019 23:10

Oh dear Lord! I slice off the amount I want before doing the grating

deifersmum · 07/10/2019 23:18

Love it, that just what I'd do, you go girl lol

I was always an orange cheese snob until I had kids. Then I found it was a great way to sell cheese to my toddlers ("Shall I get the special ORANGE CHEESE... no! you don't really want THAT do you?" "Please mummy please please" :o) heh heh heh
