Having grown increasingly tired of their shennanigans, I think the monarchy should be abolished. AIBU?

Id rather keep it thanks!

Malteserdiet · 06/10/2019 13:54

Would rather the government had an overhaul first!

PurpleDaisies · 06/10/2019 13:54

The “shenanigans” are totally irrelevant. It’s a totally undemocratic institution that doesn’t belong in modern society.

Tyrotoxicity · 06/10/2019 13:57

I can see the arguments against the monarchy, but it strikes me as a bit unfair to the Queen. She's bloody ancient and she's done what she believes is her duty for all this time. It'd feel a bit harsh to oust her at this point.

Once Ol' Jug-Ears takes over, on the other hand... Vive la revolution?

PurpleDaisies · 06/10/2019 13:58

Tyro for me, the best time it could end is when the queen dies or abdicates. She should be the last monarch of this country.

MySonIsAlsoNamedBort · 06/10/2019 14:00

@Tyrotoxicity
Jug ears 😂 Hilarious.

pikapikachu · 06/10/2019 14:00

Nothing against the Queen and would like to see her reign until the end. Can honestly say I dgaf for the others though and would have no problem with the monarchy being abolished after her death.

littlepaddypaws · 06/10/2019 14:01

let the queen pop off and then the rest can go out to pasture, so outdated.

otterturk · 06/10/2019 14:01

DFOD

pikapikachu · 06/10/2019 14:02

If there's an Indyref2 and Scotland leaves the union then that might also be a good time to wrap up the monarchy. It surprises me how many Commonwealth countries have her as Head of State.

Pardonwhat · 06/10/2019 14:03

But think of all the unemployment and loss of tourism.

Nailsfordays · 06/10/2019 14:03

Completely agree

chomalungma · 06/10/2019 14:03

The Monarchy is just a figure head. A rubber stamp.

I am glad we have the judiciary to look after our constitution, as our Head of State can't do anything.

pikapikachu · 06/10/2019 14:03

I wish there was an edit button! I didn't mean Head of State.

pikapikachu · 06/10/2019 14:04

France does fine with tourists visiting Versailles etc

MyBeloved · 06/10/2019 14:05

Once Ol' Jug-Ears takes over, on the other hand... Vive la revolution?

This is exactly how I feel.

No, you're right, I wouldn't want to cause QE2 distress by removing her immediately, I think she deserves to have peace, but once she goes - different story entirely.

But think of all the unemployment and loss of tourism.

Surely the palace etc could be opened to the public to look around. Bit better than standing at the palace gates taking photos, eh?

00100001 · 06/10/2019 14:07

They have little impact on our lives.... Couldn't care less either way

Tyrotoxicity · 06/10/2019 14:08

But think of all the unemployment and loss of tourism.

Not many tourists come to my grim northern shithole to see the Queen.

Sometimes they come to see the gate where ol' Jug-Ears' namesake was turned away a few centuries ago though. Reckon they'd still do that with or without the continued existence of the monarchy.

Pardonwhat · 06/10/2019 14:09

True. But I think a lot of tourists are fascinated that the monarchy is still current. I think international tourism to London would lose its edge overall.

Rachelover60 · 06/10/2019 14:11

I quite like the monarchy (didn't when I was young) and definitely admire the Queen, she's a remarkable woman.

A modified version will be the norm in future I think.

Tyrotoxicity · 06/10/2019 14:23

I think international tourism to London would lose its edge overall.

Mm, but it's that "I live in a grim northern shithole" thing again - tourism opportunities in London are a long way down my priority list!

Wasn't there a book where they all got sent to live on a council estate?

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 06/10/2019 14:27

I often think we'd be better off being ruled by Queenie than BoJo and the Cons.

Drabarni · 06/10/2019 14:29

Much rather have a Royal family than a president, although heading that way if boris is allowed to stay for long enough, yuk.

DaveTheGhost · 06/10/2019 14:30

I don’t think it should be abolished but definitely changed a bit
