Having grown increasingly tired of their shennanigans, I think the monarchy should be abolished. AIBU?

If she merely follows the whim of the PM, who is there to check the power of the PM and to ensure that they don't exceed their powers?

It worries me that the queen has any power at all over parliament. She is not elected. She is there purely because of the family she was born into. How can this situation still persist in modern society? Imagine the uproar in school if the person chosen to play Mary in the nativity was only based on who their parents are.

SerendipityJane · 06/10/2019 16:43

Did you hear Rees - Mogg explaining that is impossible by definition for the Queen to break the law?

Guys a moron and not a lawyer. If I need to know how much to pay my servants, I'll ask him. If I need advice on the nuance of constitutional law, I'll ask an expert in constitutional law.

From the RF website

www.royal.uk/queen-and-law

"Although civil and criminal proceedings cannot be taken against the Sovereign as a person under UK law, The Queen is careful to ensure that all her activities in her personal capacity are carried out in strict accordance with the law"

So that's ok then.....

leckford · 06/10/2019 16:47

You go around most of the palaces, including Buckingham Palace. I am in favour of the Royal Family, they are a welcome relief after the idiot politicians

Yup, a bit like diplomatic immunity. Which is obviously working out extremely well for Harry Dunn's poor family.

Heartburned · 06/10/2019 16:52

Indeed, and you could continue to go around them if there were no longer a royal family to inhabit them. Versailles was looking pretty buzzy last time I was there.

Topseyt · 06/10/2019 16:55

I have a lot of admiration for the current Queen. I think she should stay and be allowed to see out her reign in peace.

I don't particularly want the monarchy to be abolished, but I have a feeling that it will run into much choppier waters once the Queen dies and who knows what the outcome will be.

That is in part due to the behaviour and poor judgement shown by some of the Royals (Prince Andrew etc.) and in part because if the union of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales disintegrates then things will change drastically.

milveycrohn · 06/10/2019 16:56

I dont want to abolish the monarchy, but I would like to see it less relevant and slimmed down to the immediate family.
Unfortunately this takes time, but why does anyone want to watch a Royal Wedding, etc, either on TV, or even worse actually go and line the streets? This will happen when people stop wanting to see them, read about them, or watch them open a supermarket.
So it takes time.
It works in the Government's favour, as they can get the Queen, et al, to host some elaborate dinner for visiting dignitaries and ambassadors, etc, who seem to lap it up. (I think these sort are paid for by the Gov - tax payers). So as long as foreign presidents etc fall over themselves to have some elaborate dinner with the monarch and family around, then they will still exist.
That said, I don't care about any of them, I don't know them; have never met any, or likely to, and certainly don't care about the hanger's on.

PerkingFaintly · 06/10/2019 17:03

How about we decide what format we actually do want for our Head of State before getting rid of the old one?

'Cos the whole "Voting against something, but not for something" hasn't gone too well with Brexit...

ProfessorSlocombe · 06/10/2019 17:04

Although civil and criminal proceedings cannot be taken against the Sovereign as a person under UK law

Be interesting to see that tested in court Hmm Of course until tested, it's as true as it sounds.

PerkingFaintly · 06/10/2019 17:06

Part Two of which is,

If we can't agree on something better that we want, let's stick with the old one. It can always do with the improvement, but I'm not up for more chaos.

PurpleDaisies · 06/10/2019 17:08

perking I’m not sure removing the head of state role is in any way comparable to the Brexit debacle.

PerkingFaintly · 06/10/2019 17:09

Churchill described democracy along the lines of: "The worst possible system – except for all the others."

I feel slightly like that about the UK monarchy. There may be other equally OK systems, but I haven't seen one that's significantly better.

PerkingFaintly · 06/10/2019 17:11

Voting to change the constitution of the country, but not for what to change it to, is VERY like Brexit!

PurpleDaisies · 06/10/2019 17:14

Removing the head of state role will have pretty much no effect on the day to day lives of anybody. It’s not going to cause chaos or riots on the streets. The Daily Express and Daily Mail might not have any more stories to print without a royal family, which I can live with.

Hopoindown31 · 06/10/2019 17:18

The fact that the Queen's remaining perogative powers can be so easily abused by unscrupulous politicians means the monarchy has to go or assume a truly ceremonial function with no perogative powers.

Hopoindown31 · 06/10/2019 17:19

Removing the head of state role will have pretty much no effect on the day to day lives of anybody.

I guarantee that trying to run a country without a head of state will have an effect on people. However that head of state doesn't have to be a hereditary monarch.

InsertFunnyUsername · 06/10/2019 17:25

YANBU never have been a royalist, it's an out dated concept that will hopefully end after this Queen.

ageingdisgracefully · 06/10/2019 17:33

Agree that the recent prorogation debacle has shone an unflattering light on the role of Her Maj.

I reckon that once she's gone - and she must go, pretty soon - a lot of the interest in the RF will die with her.

chomalungma · 06/10/2019 17:36

I agree with that.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 06/10/2019 17:37

There should be 1st tier only -
So Queen+ Prince Philip and the immediate heir (Prince Charles )

Once the Queen abdicates or dies and Prince Charles is King then Prince William will join the 1st tier .

Any refurbishments should be down the the Royals own funds . Why the Hell is the tax payer footing the bill for weddings and house redecorating when the Queen is independantly one of the wealthiest people in the UK if not the World ?

Yes they bring in tourists - the crowds in London show that and people watching on TV .
But so did the Olympics .

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 06/10/2019 17:57

I often think we'd be better off being ruled by Queenie than BoJo and the Cons

She is a woman who has loved her entire life in luxury and never had to worry about getting a job (no, what they do,isn't a job).
A woman who has had no formal education, no qualifications, no demands on her other than to turn up, smile and wave.
A woman who has multiple homes all funded by the tax payer, had no trade, skills or discernible talents.

Sorry, but even old BoJo and the Tory twats seem a better deal than that.

WTCT · 06/10/2019 18:03

Nope. Quite happy with it, thanks.

Tyrotoxicity · 06/10/2019 18:27

Sorry, but even old BoJo and the Tory twats seem a better deal than that.

One thing I particularly like about the Queen is that the odds of her deliberately blowing the country up so she can sell the carcass to her mates are vanishingly slim. Can't say the same for Boris.

Perking makes a good point though. I'll put the metaphorical guillotine away until we've worked out the basics of an alternative.

Hearthside · 06/10/2019 18:38

Once the Queen goes the rest of the monarchy should be abolished .Too out of touch, massively spoilt.
