When ds 7 is named William (different last names)

Pregnant and due in 10 days.

OP posts:

People are confusing stress with emphasis. I am talking about length of the syllable. Both first syllables are stressed - agree, but Willow is a long 2nd syllable (the o followed by w makes it longer) whereas William is a longer first syllable due to most people pronouncing it as Willyum not Will-e-am. Pork vs fork all over again, sorry!

MerryMarigold · 06/10/2019 23:20

The length of the syllable is the same in will yum, will ee um and will oh. One has 3 syllables but the first syllable is the same on all of them.

ItsReallyNotOk · 06/10/2019 23:25

@jennymanara @stealthfart what utter twaddle. Also I’ve never come across anybody with a cat/hamster/whatever called Willow.

My step-mother had 2 cats called Willow - first Willow cat died so then named second cat Willow - and she was just called Willow never Willow Number 2.

MerryMarigold · 06/10/2019 23:27

My dear gran had a king Charles spaniel called Willow. She was really dippy.

CareBlair · 06/10/2019 23:31

I clicked on this thinking why of course you can what a beautiful name...and then i read the post! Both lovely names but not together, tbeg sound far to similar and would definitely get confusing. Maybe not for you but can imagine it would be annoying for them and others.

My grandma had a dog named Emily who was demented. I'm not so ignorant that I'd think every Emily was demented too - how insular to not name your child that name - mind boggling Confused

returnofthecat · 07/10/2019 00:02

I can't believe you got 6 pages in without anyone commenting that Willow was the name of a major character in Buffy. At various points in that programme, she was a band geek, she was a witch, she was a lesbian, she was a murderer... It's a cult show, so it does get repeated a lot.

First page, about 17 posts down Grin

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 07/10/2019 09:35

Is Willow popular again? It reminds me of Clothkits kids, ruddy faced and filthy!

Sorry OP, not helpful. I think it's confusing as a first name. I always find it odd when sons have the same name as their fathers, but it's even weirder if siblings.

You could have it as a second name though.

MerryMarigold · 07/10/2019 09:58

Equally Confused.
a. I never considered the name Willow for my child, although I quite like it and would not have discounted a name because I once knew of a dog/ cat with the same name! (Never said or implied that)
b. I was responding to a pp who said they'd never heard of any pets called Willow and reminiscing about my Gran's dog.
c. Overreaction much?

zzzzzzzz12345 · 07/10/2019 10:00

I was about to say beautiful name unti I saw your sons name. Are you nuts OP??? It would be a ridiculous choice in the circumstances.

zzzzzzzz12345 · 07/10/2019 10:01

Come to think of it I also have known lots of dog and cat willows!

Ninabean17 · 07/10/2019 18:15

My 7 yr old is Willow Rose. Suits her perfectly and always had people comment on it (in a good way). Not sure I'd have a willow and a William though.

Offred2 · 07/10/2019 19:04

Those two names are too similar in my opinion. I know two sisters in their fifties called Eileen and Elaine and always wonder what their parents were thinking! It suggests a lack of imagination I think.

aspoonfulofyourownmedicine · 07/10/2019 19:37

I love Willow.... but perhaps too similar to William.

That said, my sister is Michelle and my brother is Mitchell and our dad is Michael

theWarOnPeace · 07/10/2019 19:48

I remember when someone told me that their two girls were called Emily and Amelia. I struggled to respond for a split second, because I was so shocked that she didn’t think it sounded stupid.... William and Willow sound ridiculous together, sorry.

Beesandcheese · 08/10/2019 09:25

The name itself is lovely. But having given all of my children names with a similar sound at the end and the daily confusion that brings when some mumbly teen or excited babbling child asks for ---an ... I'd say no, the starting sound being the same would be too much. Though the shorthand for not having to say children if you don't like kids you could just shout "wills"

Beesandcheese · 08/10/2019 09:29

don't like the WORD kids. Obviously you like children!

bluebluezoo · 08/10/2019 09:39

I think similar sounding names for siblings/twins is becoming fashionable.

I know several sets of twins with m/f names - olivia/oliver, wayne/waynetta* so it seems to be a “thing”

Not their real names, obvs. Just struggling to think of examples that aren’t their names!!!

MerryMarigold · 08/10/2019 10:05

Really? When I had twins it was all about trying to establish their individuality and changing the age-old dressing them the same, giving similar names, having them in the same class at school etc.

BigChocFrenzy · 08/10/2019 10:16

Don't call her WIllow

She'll suffer bullying, catty remarks, sniggers behind her back unless she is indeed willowy / slim lifelong

Basecamp65 · 08/10/2019 10:36

My Granddaughter is a Willow and to be honest her name has never been shortened to anything by anyone.

In my opinion your daughter will have this name - hopefully - for 80+ years and will live in the same house as her brother for 10 - 15 so weigh that up.

There are a lot of Willows around though - we know about 8.

HariboLecter · 08/10/2019 10:45

I was going to say it's a gorgeous name, but then I saw the rest of your post. I think it would get a bit confusing.
Could you use it as a middle name?

Nodnol · 08/10/2019 11:03

I adore the name Willow. With William though, it’s a bit samey. If William could be persuaded to accept Liam then I’d be all for it.

What about Harlow or Marlow if you like the sound of the name?

bluebluezoo · 08/10/2019 13:23

*Don't call her WIllow

Ffs I hate this victim blaming. Don’t do this, don’t do that, it will be your own fault if you get bullied.

Bullies will bully anything. If you “correct” whatever the percieved fault is they’ll bully you over that instead. Ha ha she has hairy arms. Oh look haha she’s shaved her arms they’re so hairy.

It’s the bullies fault they bully. Stop basing decisions over what other people will think, and stop blaming bullied kids for the bully’s behaviour.

Anyone who sniggers and makes catty remarks about anyone, willowy or not, is an arsehole and their opinions are moot.
